Iraq Sellout Thursday: Call Congress Today
On Thursday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi will force the House to approve $163 billion more of our tax dollars for the occupation of Iraq - nearly $100 billion for 2008 plus nearly $70 billion more for 2009.
We are outraged. This Democratic Congress was elected to end the occupation, not fund it forever.
On Monday, a new Democrats.com poll found an overwhelming 68% of Americans want to bring our troops safely home within 6 months - a significant increase from 54% last September. Support among Democrats increased 14% to 85%, while support among Independents increased 20% to 78%. Why is the Democratic Congress defying the will of the overwhelming majority of Democrats and Independents?
Each day's news underscores how disastrous the occupation is. April was the deadliest month for U.S. soldiers since last September. One in five Iraq and Afghanistan veterans - roughly 300,000 - report symptoms of PTSD or major depression. The V.A. covered up the fact that 12,000 veterans attempt suicide each year while under V.A. treatment. As Cindy Sheehan asked, "for what noble cause" are our sons and daughters suffering and dying?
To make matters worse, Bush continues to use our occupation of Iraq as a reason to wage a covert war against Iran that could quickly turn to a wider and even more disastrous war. We know the Iraq War "marketing" was timed for the 2002 election - if John McCain is behind in the polls, will Bush "bomb bomb Iran" as an "October Surprise" to keep Republicans in power?
On top of it all, as our economy tanks, we simply cannot afford to waste $163 billion more of our tax dollars for Iraq on top of the $562 billion we've already wasted and the $3 trillion overall cost, included tripling the price of gasoline.
It's urgent for everyone to call our Representatives today with a simple message: Not One More Penny for Iraq.
This battle is not impossible. On January 16, 42 progressive Democrats voted against the last $70 billion blank check. Most Republicans oppose Pelosi's bill because it includes some domestic spending, so a large bloc of progressive Democrats can defeat it.
Call the switchboard at 202-224-3121 or find your Representative's name and direct dial by entering your address on the right side here. Please report the results of your call here:

Report call re: iraq sellout
I called Rep Markkirk's office to urge strongly that he oppose this bill. The person I spoke to will give him the message but didn't know his thinking on the issue.
called Mark Kirk
I also called Rep. Kirk. I told the staffer I hope the Congressman will do the right thing and vote against any more money for Iraq and will hold Bush accountable for the things he's done. He said he'd pass along the message.
re: iraq sellout
I called after, I returned from volunteering today. I left a message's for Senator Bob Casey, and Senator Arlen Spector. I expect Casey to vote against more funds. Spector will probably side with Bush. I think our calls and leters have had some effect though. Spector has voted against a few bills Bush presented to the Senate recently.
I called
My approach was to ask why $163 billion more was needed. I demanded an accounting for every penny of how it was being spent. I also said, that if Bush got his G*D*mned $163 billion he'd be back again next week to demand $100 billion more.
I demanded to know when all these demands for billions and billions of tax dollars for the never-ending occupation of Iraq was going to end.
Furthermore, I wanted to know why the hell we weren't paying for it, why we were adding this $163 billion to our indebtedness. I went into a tirade about the tax cuts Bush's G*D*mned cronies had gotten and the G*D*mned tax bills that wete being passed onto my children, my grandchildren, my great grandchildren and ever onward. Then I mention the interest that would accrue on that indebtedness and dedicated a solid minute to some serious cursing.
I think they got a message.
I'm in Washington State. I gave hell to Patty Murray, Maria Cantwell and Adam Smith, for the record. They're used to it.
Called My Rep
I called my state rep's office today and was assured that he would not support any legistlation providing more funding for the war in Iraq.
Too bad that so many other democrats cannot say that.
Rick McGowan
Iraq funding courtesy of the Democrats
I called Kendrick Meek's office and told him to stop the funding now. All the Democrats were doing was talking about stopping the war but when it came time for actions they rolled over and did whatever Bush wanted them to do.
Funding for the war. Not-
I called the 202-224-3121 number, reached the House, asked for Pelosi's voice mail, was referred to Pelosi's secretary who, in turn, gave me Pelosi's voice mail. I identified myself, where I live and asked her to please, please stop allocating funding for this war. I told her it needs to stop, now. It was so easy and so direct.
I have already sent numerous e-mails to both of my Congressmen, Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman, who are highly opposed to this war and have been speaking out against it for some time, now.
Iraq Sellout
I called Rep. Eliot Engel and informed a staff member that I want him to vote "NO" on the further funding of the war in Iraq. The staff member said he will relay my message to Rep. Engel.
He votes with Bush
And Engel promptly voted Yes
Iraq War Funding Call
Spoke to Jillian Youngblood in Nadler's DC office to register my request that he vote no to any Iraq war funding. I asked what he intended, and Jillian said "I can't imagine that he'd vote for it." We've heard that before. She took my name and address.
Funding for Iraq War
I called Congressman Al Green's office urging him not to support Speaker Pelosi's blind indefinite funding of the Iraq War. Instead I suggested that any funding be tied to a safe, methodical withdrawal plan.
I was told that my comments would be passed on to the Congressman.
Calling Congress.....
Called Rangel's office and was told LOTS of calls are coming in! He will vote against the bill. He knows we are watching......
Iraq Sellout
I called my rep and asked the staff member to ask the congressmember to vote for no more money for Iraq. Two-thirds of Americans want us out of Iraq now!
Iraq Sellout
Called Ellen Tausher staff advised she will vote no.
Call to Congressman
I called California 1st District Congressman Mike Thompson's office this morning. I spoke with a staff person. I said that Thompson was a hypocrite for espousing himself as a "fiscal conservative" yet continually voting in favor of wasteful DOD appropriations and additional funding for the illegal wars in Afghanistan and Iraq -- subsidization for the corporate military weapons industry by any other name. I've written frequent letters critical of Thompson to local media, although the larger ones (Santa Rosa, San Francisco) have essentially stopped printing them in the past few years.
In my mind, those who vote to fund these wars are as guilty of breaking federal law as are the perpetrators in the Bush Administration, and they all should be held accountable for war crimes.
Called Jim Matheson's office, UT rep
I called Jim Matheson's (Dem rep from UT) office and asked if he planned to vote again to fund the continuing occupation. His staff person said he wasn't sure given the final wording has not yet been agreed upon (but of course he did know, and Matheson will).
I said that the possible versions of the bill all support funding through 2009 but add some domestic items so Democrats can save face (such as college benefits for military vets). I responded that his continuing support for this occupation, against the desires of his constituency, makes him personally responsible for this disastrous policy; he's responsible for the deaths of more US soldiers than people killed on 9/11, and the deaths of innocent Iraqis equal to 300 9/11s; he's responsible for this policy that has ruined America's reputation as a nation of justice. I finished by saying if he votes in favor of the funding tomorrow that I'll be working hard for his ouster.
Don't sellout on Iraq
I called my representative, Steve Pearce (R-NM), and left a message expressing my disapproval for Pelosi's sellout. Unfortunately, he is one of Bushco's most notorious enablers. Whether he even cares what his constituents want is a highly debatable question.
Iraq sellout
I called Pelosi, got her machine. I said, "You are a larger disappointment than the president and V.P., because we trusted you to represent us and you have consistently betrayed us. How dare you, Madam Speaker justify throwing yet more money on this occupation in Irag from which we trusted you to withdraw suport. And while we're at it, it was unforgiveable of you to unilaterally take impeachment "off the table." How dare you have betrayed us so thoroughly. I and no one I know would ever again throw a vote your way. Our anger and our sense of betrayal is too great to allow us to be tricked again.
War Spending Bill
I called Rep. Watson's office and logged my protest against
the war spending bill. Rep. Watson's staffer thanked me for
my input.
called my rep. allyson schwartz
simply relayed the message of not a penny more for a war that was wrong from day one and stand tall against the odd balls to begin bringing the troops home and to start that process now.
Called Darlene Hooley
I spoke to her assistant and clarified that she is in DC and will be voting on Thursday. Told him I was adamantly opposed to the war and to any further funding of the war. Reiterated that the Dems promised to get us out of Iraq and had, to date, failed miserably. He at least took the time to get my name, address, zip so (hopefully) she will get the message.
Call results - Iraq funding
I expressed my view that no more moneys should be approved by my representatives for the Iraq conflict. I also reiterated my support for the impeachment of Cheney and Bush. Feinstein and Schiff had live staffers answer the phones.; Boxer had voicemail.
frank that s your senator
Barbara and Diane are your senators.
report call re: Iraq sellout
I called Rep. Oberstar's office to ask him to vote against further Iraq appropriations. His staff took my name and address and will forward my opinion. I believe he will oppose this bill as he did the one in January.
I called my Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen of TN
I called my rep, Democrat Steve Cohen. I told them "no more money for murder". I explained to them that we are not in a war. There is no declaration of war and we are not at war with anyone. We are in George Bush's murderous rampage in Iraq, and we want nothing more to do with it.
My rep is usually great, but today his staff was unaware of any such vote on the calendar. The staffer said he will forward my message to the congressman.
I called
Spoke to Rep. Ben Chandler of KY's office. Told him I do not approve of any more taxes going to Iraq except to remove our troops as soon as possible. I am fed up. I am a Viet Nam era veteran and I know all too well what this mess will continue to cost us. It must stop now. I was told Ben would be given my comments.
calls to sneators
I called Schumer, Clinton and Obama's Offices. The person answering said they would pass it on to the senators...NO MORE MONEY FOR IRAQ!!!!
called Laura Richardson / new progressive internet radio network
I called Laura Richardson and was told 1) The staff did not know the voting schedule for tommorrow and 2) The Congresswoman will not be in DC tommorrow due to death of her father.
I passed along condolances along with my feelings on the Iraq grease fire and that it must end now without delay.
Thanks & keep the pressure on the DC machine to wake up and listen to the people...!
peace,
greg
iraq bill
Called Chris Van Hollen in DC. My message was passed on, but apparently the young lady "hadn't had a chance to speak with him" about the issue. I know this has to be their position to avoid getting in arguments or some such, but really, "hadn't spoken" about the most important issue there is?
sellout
Jane Harman claims she is voting no.
Rep Lamar Smith
Representative Lamar Smith is my Congressman from Texas and I just called his office. Of course, he is a Republican so I was wasting my statement but I none the less gave it. No more money for the War in Iraq. I had to volunteer my name so we know how far that message got.
These Republican Thugs in Texas are in for a rude awakining in November. I will crow from the top of the UT tower in Austin when that happens.
Phyllis Culbert
I called Pelosi's office about the $163 billion
I called the office in Washington and the guy who answered would not take my comment but transfered me to a "comment line" where I could record the comment. I asked why the heck weren't they using my tax dollars to have someone to talk to vs. the comment line, and using all my tax dollars for the illegal war in Iraq and sending more money there to kill our young kids vs. putting them in college! I left a long angry message until it cut my off.
No More Blank Checks for Iraq
I chose to fax my Senators Feinstein & Boxer as well as Congressman Brad Sherman with the following message:
To: (Congressperson)
Re: No More Tax Dollars WASTED on the Illegal and Immoral OCCUPATION of Iraq
I am outraged that Nancy Pelosi and a democratic Congress would even consider handing our unconstitutionally-appointed-by-the-Supreme-Court president billions more for his utter failure of a war-turned-occupation in Iraq.
Our brave soldiers deserve better.
The people of Iraq deserve better.
The hard-working citizens of America deserve better.
Do NOT, under ANY circumstances, vote in approval of the Iraq spending bill coming before Congress tomorrow.
NOT ONE SINGLE PENNY MORE SHOULD BE PROVIDED FOR IRAQ UNLESS IT IS FOR THE SAFE WITHDRAWL OF OUR TROOPS.
VOTE NO, NO, NO ON ANOTHER BLANK CHECK FOR BUSH!!!
VOTE NO, NO, NO ON SADDLING FUTURE GENERATIONS OF AMERICANS WITH THE BILL - PLUS UNCONSCIONABLE ACCRUED INTEREST - FOR AN ILLEGAL, IMMORAL OCCUPATION!!!
(and then in HUGE font...)
GET US OUT OF IRAQ!!!
Speaker Pelosi and $163 million more for Iraq
I called Representative Giffords of Arizona to express my dismay that we keep giving the Cheney Administration whatever its puppet requests for the continuing disaster in Iraq. How many times do we have to rise up and scream 'stop' to this incredibly weak Democratic leadership in our House of Representatives? When are these representatives going to understand that they are there to represent our collective will. None of us will be happily represented all of the time, but when we together are so overwhelmingly against an endeavor such as this destruction of our armies and our assets in an unprovoked war, why cannot these people understand that things have changed. We have the internet. We get around the big-company owned networks with their controlled news and blackouts.
Representatives from the House in Washington are there to serve, and we are watching, ballots in hand. When is someone going to propose and press for some end to this war? There will be no end to it as long as our soldiers are there, and how much money and human suffering are we going to pour down into that bottomless pit? How much money is China and Saudi Arabia willing to lend us? People, this has to stop.
If California returns Pelosi, one can only assume her constituents are deaf, blind and dumb.
sent a fax
I sent a fax to my Representative. I feel that physical paper can carry more weight than a phone call, which may not get through to them. On paper, I can say exactly what I want to say, and it is there for them to read, rather than trying to remember it.
Money for Iraq
I called my congressman today -- Carol Shey Porter. Although she is a Democrat, she is not going to vote for any money for an endless war like Iraq. She believes we should get out immediately.
HR 5507 do not to fund this war
Left a phone message for new congressperson Jackie Speier to sign onto HR 5507 and not to fund this war supplemental.
good luck
I called Gene Taylor's
I called Gene Taylor's (MS-04) office and spoke to Ethan Rabin. I asked Ethan to relay my request that Mr. Taylor vote against the blank check for Iraq. He said he does not know how Mr. Taylor plans to vote tomorrow, that the bill will be in three parts including funding, some anti-torture language, and some financial incentives for veterans. I told Ethan to relay my thanks to Mr. Taylor for his new tendency to vote more with the progressives instead of the Bush Dog Democrats, but Ethan would only say he would relay my comments.
Vote for Iraq money
Earl Blumenauer's office (D-OR) took my call and thanked me. Blumenauer has steadfastly opposed the war and I have no doubt he's taking note of voices raised.
Calls to Senators
I made call to three Senators. Kennedy, Kerry and McGovern.
Mr Kennedy's office told me he was in support of our demands. Kerry's office like Kerry himself will not demean themselves so refuse to answer so he can say whatever someone wants to hear. A shame really. I thought he might actually have a side.
McGovern's office told me he was inclined to support our requests.
We will see when Pelosi tries to railroad the people of this coutry with further demands of our money to fight this unholy, terrible Vietnam again war.
I can only hope she comes to her senses but I hold little hope. There must be a bargain of some sort that she wants to make and selling us out when we are already over burdened with the price of gas. A major recession and the worst housing predicament in years.
I just hope these Washington entities do the right thing but as i said before, I have little hope they will do the right thing. It seems lately dispointment is the only thing we can count on from Washington.
Iraq funding in budget bill
I contacted Rep Sylvestre Reyes office and advised them I had recieved emails from several organizations asking that I contact him and suggest he vote against further funding of this illegal war by way of the 2009 budget bill. I asked that he consider passing other bills that would fund an immediate withdrawal or fund only under circumstances that the Bush administration would be limited to. I also asked him to support the new GI Bill as requested by IAVA. Brendon in his office could not say what the Rep's "concrete" direction on this subject was.
pelosi
Patsy
I called Nancy "bend over for Bush" Pelosi and then I called the DNC, the DSCC, the DCCC,. I said that I would not send one nickel to their solicitations for money until Pelosi stopped the funding for Iraq. I asked if anyone had any power to guide her to a better position on this. I expressed my anger. Grr.
More $$$ for Iraq
Called Representative Mike Rogers in Michigan. Said enough, no more funding for this war, the people have clearly spoken, and it's past time for our Government to listen to the people they are supposed to be representing.
Iraq billions
Jack Kingstons aid said thw bill wasn't even in print yet.
He said it was going to be the bums rush to get it passed.
Explained to him that the public didn't approve and those who didn't understand this will be introduced to the food chain in November.
I didn't waste any time on Chambliss or Isakson. They're
neoturds. Around heah' in Georgia it's mostly party elephant do-do.
Discouraged Ex-Republican
I hope that nobody "stones" me.
I actually voted for Dubya TWICE after being "brainwashed" by my church that he was -- without a doubt -- GOD's candidate for the U.S. Presidency.
I have to confess that I am guilty. Responsible for everyone that has been killed in Iraq and the $500+ BILLION that the Iraq war has cost us.
I told the Congress person that I talked to: "No More Money For Dubya's Mad War On Nothing. If the troops end up starving over there, that is Dubya's personal problem."
applause, not stoning
good for you. you not only abandoned the lying traitor, but you have the courage to face the truth about what support for his policies means. I don't do church (enough brainwashing), but if there's a 'big guy', I think s/he'll forgive you - especially if you work on your fellow parishioners.
Iraq Funding
I called Henry Waxman's office and urged him not to allocate any more funds for Iraq unless it was to bring our troops home. He is not supporting Nancy Pelosi on this and voted against the funding.
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
Everything we're seeing and experiencing now has long ago been planned, scripted and now being carried out!
There's forces in operation that have aggressively & treacherously fought to see this implemented!
PLEASE go to this site and simply read this page (of course and any others if you can stand it???
http://newamericancentury.org/statementofprinciples.htm
And NOOOOO this is no quack site... this' REAL; look at the signors.
No more Iraq Blood Money
A person in Representative Darlene Hooley's office assured me that the Oregon representative is in DC and will vote against the bill tomorrow (Thursday, May 8)
Still defying the will of the people?!?
I called Rep. Mark Udall and spoke to a live person this time in the office. The person answering made no comment, but merely noted my request, asked where I lived and said he would pass along my views to Mr. Udall.
Personally, I am absolutely frustrated with Nancy Pelosi's failed leadership of the House. She has done nothing but forestall taking any action, capitulated to right-wing pressure and supported the unchecked system of power abuses that were endorsed by the previous Congress and Bush Administration.
Seems to me that this entrenched group of career politicians in the Congress - Republicans and Democrats alike - has become too comfortable sitting on their pampered behinds and is in dire need of a shakeup. This Novemember is time for many of these do-nothing panderers to receive their walking papers - if you can't step up and enact the will of the people that elected you, then it's time for you to step out!!!
