Bob Jones' sick new precalculus text
KKK handbook or Math text? Bob Jones University has a sick textbook designed to make money for the school while much better texts are readily available. This textbook is further proof that these false christians are engaged in building a modern tower of Babel. Why don't they stick to discussing just the Bible rather than putting their sick social commentary in a math textbook?
I found the following review from http://www.somareview.com/
If you’re curious what they’re teaching down there in Greenville, S.C., check out the Readings section of the December issue of Harper’s magazine. “Original Sine” is an excerpt from "Precalculus for Christian Schools," a textbook published by Bob Jones University. The book aims to help students “conform their thinking to biblical precepts.” Here are samples:
“Carl Friedrich Gauss first proved the fundamental theorem of algebra. There are many fundamental theorems: of arithmetic, calculus, and so on. These are so ‘fundamental’ that many other theorems are derived from them. In the Bible, there are also fundamentals, without which Christianity would not exist—the deity of Christ, His substitutionary atonement, and the inspiration of the Bible, to name a few.”
“A line can be described either by its slope (a ratio) or by its inclination (an angle). These terms describe the deviation from the horizontal, but the word inclination also has a non-mathematical meaning. Without Christ, man is inclined to sin. The Word of God should shape our attitudes (inclinations).”
And finally, my favorite:
“If you are given the length of two sides and the angle measure opposite one of those sides, you can use the law of sines to solve the triangle. However, this does not always determine a unique triangle. As a result, it is called the ambiguous case. Ambiguous means open to multiple interpretations. Some people say that you can interpret the Bible in any way that you want. However, there is no ambiguity in the Bible.”

An objective review of this "text" would warn that it not only wastes students time, but will also leave them behind studenst using more competent texts. Modern texts are concise and have real-world math applications involving economics, biology, and physics. Leave the Bible to the department that teaches sociology or better yet, mythology.

LMAO
I would *love* to see the text for their logic class.
A little extreme...
I am a Catholic who goes to a protestant school and I consider myself conservative, but I do agree that Jones is a bit extreme in his applications which are primarily contrived and have no over all connection to the Bible or Christian beliefs as a whole. In fact, we always skip over those scripture sections in class. The teacher understands that Jones is reaching. But I do believe that citing the book as "sick" is a bit extreme and the connotation should instead be attributed to the mathematical content. In short, Precalculus sucks.
Oh, I discoverd this site while searching for some online Precalc guides. ;)
Welcome to the site. I to
Welcome to the site.
I too have to say the text is sick, and in fact blasphemous. It takes decades, and a special talent to learn anything of import, and Jones has not. Speaking about things one knows nothing of, and attaching the name of God to them is a horror. If one’s God fears the men and women who have given us this civilization, and defend it with high technology, then one worships falsely. The deep laziness of delinquents like Jones is a disgrace to all real men and women who have struggled to build this Nation.
If you have any calculus questions feel free to ask me.
I grew up in Bob Jones town and believe me the last
thing he should be writing are pre-calculus books. Most of the common folk that live in Greenville cannot even pronounce pre-calculus.
Bob Jones is a very powerful man, and his participation in the faith
based criminality that allows the stealing of taxpayer dollars to fund
his racist rhetoric needs exposure.
Because of Bob Jones there is no MLK holiday, I've been told that there will be some dead bodies before MLK receives any respect with a holiday.
I think if more people knew about the obvious white racism
mentality of the likes of the new christian right, and
Bob Jones and his ilk, many people may choose to avoid the
place.
However, if you have a little racism harboring around, move to
Greenville and you can expose it for what it really is, plain barbarian ignorance.
I love Pre-Calculus, Calculus and Differential Equations, if everyone really understood math, there would be a liking for it. Americans on
a general principle, especially the teachers I had in that town in most cases should have never been allowed to teach. They teach like the BJU book, with anonalies that have no meaning to the greater text of doing some real-world problem in physics, biology, business, economics, etc...
Thanks for posting! I didn't
Thanks for posting! I didn't get a chance to mention that those guys are racists! TheCatholic has not come back, but should he, it is something he should know and digest.
Jim, you do not reside in BJU town do you?
You will not believe it, unless you live it.
Bob Jones basically owns Greenville, nothing
happens without his input.
BJU accumulates racists from all over the world
for the school. Now these folk graduate
and get political positions by elections
where the polling places open after most people of
color must be at work, or risk losing, or
right before they get off of work.
Most people of color in the south work factory
like hours, 7-7 the polls will open at 8
and close at 6:30 ensuring that most people of colr
do not vote, forget counting the votes.
Every election before 5pm, the election
is declared a winner for whatever Republican
chooses to run, whether or not he makes
a good politician for his constituents, his
basic favor goes to BJU.
It's Common Knowledge, Really
He hates Jews. He hates Catholics. He hates blacks. He's practically a member of the Ku Klux Klan.
Chances are he haves some serious Grand Wizard Dragon
type of power. Supposedly he is handing over
the reigns to his son, shortly.
