Election DAY? No, Week! In summer! Online!
Election Day is coming soon! Is anyone asking the following questions? Last time I heard anything, Gephardt was asking them right after the 2000 debacle -- that's eight years ago!
About Election Day:
- Why is it only one day?
- Why is it a weekday?
- Why is it a winter's day?
- Why is it close to major sports' playoffs?
About voting:
- Why can't we vote via fax?
- Why can't we vote via telephone?
- Why can't we vote via text-message?
- Why can't we vote via snail mail?
- Why can't we vote via ATMs?
- Why can't we vote via the Internet?
There are already very secure systems using all these methods that we trust, e.g., we trust faxes with insurance claims, ATMs with our money, snail mail with our personal information (e.g., tax returns), even the Internet with all those and more via secure sites beginning with "https://". Why can't we trust any of these with our vote?
Andy, the State of Oregon already has...
vote by mail as a regular feature of every election in the state.
The advantages are many: no polling places(no exit polls). Voters have their ballots a couple of weeks in advance of the election date. They can spread their ballots out on the kitchen table or any other area large enough to leisurely go through all the candidates and measures to be voted on. When the ballot is marked, it can be returned to the registrar of voters by snail mail or dropped in a convenient drop box.
We have had this for a while now and most of the residents really like it. Our turnouts usually run between 70% and 80%, even in the offyear elections.
There are no untrained or poorly trained poll workers and since there are no precinct locations, the state saves money bigtime.
Vote by mail has worked out very well in all parts of the state--rural and urban areas alike.
Strange that more states haven't chosen to put this superior methodology into practice. More noticeable in this particular primary is the patchwork quilt of crazy laws that still prevail in many of our states.
Not only is the vote by mail virtually error free, but the ballots are paper and are maintained in a secure location for recounts should they be needed.
So far, it has proven itself to be virtually error free.

The greatest derangement of the mind is to believe in something because one wishes it to be so.
