Subject: Iran Action Meeting Proposal
September 12,2007
Dear __________,
We stand at a dangerous precipice. Millions in Iraq and the Middle East, in
the U.S., and across the globe want the Iraq war to end. But the Bush regime
is preparing just the opposite: to continue its murderous escalation in Iraq
(antiseptically labeled the "surge") - and very likely launch a massive air
attack on Iran. We want to propose working with you and your group to develop
an action meeting on Iran soon to raise the alarm and organize opposition.
Over the last month, U.S. preparations for attacking Iran,
in the works for some two years at least, have taken a leap. See:

Pentagon 'three-day blitz' plan for Iran
By Sarah Baxter
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article2369001.ece
It's estimated that half the U.S.'s warships are now poised near Iran,
including three aircraft carriers. This means that an attack on Iran
wouldn't have to be preceded by a drawn out and obvious military build up.
It could come very quickly - without warning - in an effort to "shock and
awe" the world with a "fait accompli" - and stun people into passivity.
Meanwhile, on Iraq, Bush and company are making clear that the war will
continue indefinitely - regardless of what the people want or whether Iraq
meets Congress's non-binding "benchmarks." Rather than back down, Bush is
reportedly going to demand another $50 billion for the war.
And what is the "anti-war" Democratic Party doing to stop this? Nothing. Its
phony "opposition" to the Iraq war grows weaker by the moment and may be
near collapse. Meanwhile, they've basically joined the "War-on- Iran" Caucus.
Last spring, Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi pulled a provision forcing Bush
to consult with Congress before attacking Iran, basically green- lighting any
unannounced bombing of Iran. This summer, the Senate voted 97 to zero for a
prepare-for-war resolution condemning Iran for supposedly killing of U.S.
soldiers in Iraq. And are the Democratic candidates raising hell about the
danger of war on Iran? No.
The Chicago Chapter of the World Can't Wait - Drive Out the Bush Regime is
proposing a serious response. We are honestly not sure if it is possible to
prevent this utterly intransigent regime from carrying out its plans. But we
know that there are millions of people who agonize over the carnage in Iraq
and wake up with nightmares brought on by the violence fueled by the
so-called "war on terror." We believe that it will take removing the Bush
regime from office to stop them. But we also know that the people of Iran,
the Middle East and the whole world need us right now, and there is the
possibility of many people waking to that realization very quickly.
We are suggesting an emergency meeting in about one month. Oct. 3rd at
Columbia College downtown is our proposal. We envision reaching out very
broadly for the meeting, including by advertising in the Chicago Tribune or
the Reader, on Air America, and through other media, with a challenge that
it is up to the people to stop this atrocity before it starts. Because of
some of the confusion regarding Iran and the already-underway disinformation
campaign, we would like to include an education component. Second, we want
to see serious action proposals from involved groups over how to tackle this
grave danger: mobilizations, political resistance, and student actions,
particularly student strikes. All proposals and discussion would need to be
focused on the condensed timeline we are faced with and look at really
moving on this in an urgent way.
This would not be a World Can't Wait meeting on the entire Bush program, but
rather on the specific danger of attacking Iran and how to bring it to a
halt. Your group is invited to be a part of shaping the plans. Now is the
time for fresh thinking, clear, honest appraisals of what is at hand and
bold moral certitude: any attack, even if following a provocation, would be
an act of aggression that cannot be allowed.
Your response is needed as soon as possible.
Best,
