Peace, Injustice, and Ron Paul

By David Swanson

If Ron Paul had been president for the past 6 years, a million more Iraqis would be alive, and another 4 million would not be refugees. The world would be a safer place, and Americans would have lost fewer freedoms.

But more Americans would lack decent health care. More American children would lack adequate education. More families in America would struggle in poverty. Immigrant families would face increased threats and abuse. Women would have lost rights. And a growing oligarchy would further dominate American politics, making reversal of any admirable Paul policies likely.

Paul arrives at some admirable positions for some unexpected reasons. And his principles lead him to many reprehensible positions as well. He opposes occupying Iraq because it involves massive government expense and power. That, and not the million corpses, is his primary concern.

Paul is brave enough to say what he thinks and stand by it. While there are Democrats, like Dennis Kucinich and Barbara Lee, who have that same quality, the Democratic Party as a whole has an established reputation of not standing and fighting for anything, and least of all peace.

So, it's not completely surprising that a lot of opponents of the occupation of Iraq are looking to Paul as the best presidential candidate out there. Many Paul supporters really want peace and want it for the best reasons, but they detest the word "liberal" and loathe "big government." Others are not quite in that camp but consider the war such an overwhelmingly important issue that they don't much care what Paul's other positions are.

But Paul would end the occupation of Iraq and offer the Iraqi people not a dime to help rebuild the nation we've destroyed. In fact, he would cut the pittance we give in foreign aid around the world. But Paul has never, to my knowledge, said he would cut a single dollar from the biggest big government expense there is, much bigger than any war: the yearly budget of the Pentagon. And if he thinks he can keep funding that and NOT launch new wars, he hasn't thought about the workings of our government quite enough.

So, a Paul government would be stingy, extravagant, war-prone despite itself, and in debt. Would Paul solve that problem be reinstating progressive taxation for the super wealthy and corporations? No, he'd cut taxes. Of course, taxes SHOULD be cut for most people. But unless they're raised for the wealthy and corporations, we will have even more debt (which Paul says he opposes) or we will have to make massive cuts in what's left of the non-military public sector. And that's exactly what Paul would like to see: "wasteful agencies" and "governments collecting foreign aid" are among his targets. Rather than increasing funding for public schools, his solution for education would be to cut more taxes (the thinking being that this would allow parents to teach their children at home). That works for parents who want to do that and don't have to work. But most parents don't want to do that and do have to work. And with a president Paul allowing the minimum wage to plummet, opposing living wage standards, and doing nothing to restore the right to unionize, parents' work hours would not be shrinking.

Of course parents who don't work, or don't work jobs with good benefits, tend to lack health insurance. Paul would offer these tens of millions of Americans and the even greater number with inadequate health insurance nothing more than a middle finger. Paul believes the greatest crisis in our health care is the imposition of vaccinations. Everything always comes back to his notion of personal "freedom," even if it's the freedom to die of a curable disease. The only solution that has been found to provide everyone decent health care – in fact it works in almost every industrialized nation in the world – would mean private medicine, allowing everyone to choose their own doctor, but would also mean replacing the health insurance companies with the government. This is the last thing Paul would ever stand for. Better that people suffer and die than that the government be involved in helping them.

Women who value the right to abortion would lose it under a Paul Administration. This is not speculation. He openly says he wants to overturn Roe v. Wade. That's his principle and he stands by it courageously and honestly, but most Americans disagree with him.

Life would change dramatically for all Americans under this sort of right-wing rule, but much more so for immigrants. Paul would allow fewer legal immigrants, while denying any illegal immigrants a path to become citizens. An immigrant woman here without papers who was raped would be denied the right to an abortion. Her child, born in America, would be denied citizenship. Her family would be denied welfare, as well as health care, and education, not to mention any investment in public transportation. Undocumented workers would gain no workplace rights under a Paul government, and so the rights of all of us would continue to erode. In fact, immigrants would be scapegoated and associated with 9-11, and Paul's priority would be "securing borders."

Under a Paul administration there would be fewer immigrants for a good reason: he opposes the trade policies that destroy the economies of the nations they flee to come here. But Paul opposes those policies because they are international, not because they empower corporations and hurt workers. That's none of his concern. He's a "property rights" man, even if it's at the expense of those without property. He opposes NAFTA for the same reason he opposes the United Nations. He would erode international law far more swiftly than Bush, thereby endangering us all in the long run. International law is what works against wars of aggression. The UN told Bush not to invade Iraq. Bush illegally invaded anyway.

But if Paul is as major an opponent of justice as I suggest, why then are so many advocates of peace and justice flocking to him? It depends in each case. Many passionately oppose the occupation of Iraq, but they don't call it an occupation. They call it a war. And their chief concern is not the million Iraqis dead, but the nearly four thousand Americans. And (this is key) they don't like the Democrats.

Paul is a man with principles, bizarre and twisted principles, but principles. Beside him, most of the Republicans look like charlatans, and the Democrats who are allowed on television and in the New York Times look like spineless cowards. They look like spineless cowards not because they favor peace (they don't), but because they refuse to stand up to Bush and Cheney. Paul stands up to Bush and Cheney. NOTHING is more powerful than that in today's politics, and he does it. Standing up to Bush and Cheney is what propelled Howard Dean's campaign so rapidly, and few paid close attention to what his positions were either.

Of course, there is a candidate in the 2008 presidential race who stands consistently and courageously on principle for both peace AND justice. And if we had the courage of our convictions we would put everything we have into backing him. Not only might he win, but our backing him now might force the Democrats in Congress to act like they believe in something, and force other candidates to improve their positions. His name is Dennis Kucinich. Paul doesn't want people to give their money to Washington. Give it to http://www.kucinich.us

So Dennis is a benign Ron

So Dennis is a benign Ron Paul? Interesting comparison...

LOL Bill, naw, Dennis is a fundy Catholic while Paul is...

a common ordinary wacko fundy.

Ron Paul for President?

Ron Paul is what every representative in our Congress should be....a Constitutional and  Bill of Rights believer. A believer in the rule of law.  Kucinich and a few others still do their job and adhere to their oath of office. I also like Jackson Lee, Maxine Walters, Nancy Kaptar, Jan S...(sp? from IL), etc. We can do better than Ron Paul in our own party.

The truth should also be part of their job. If they told the truth we would not be in Iraq because Suddam did not attack us on 911. We have been attacking them for years...ever since the Bush family was in power...20 some years.  They want them gone so they can have the oil and land. Remember the PNAC.

Ron Paul is a Republican and an Liberatarian in belief. Smaller government is a part of his agenda that could be very much like the present one...privitization (cronyism and robbery of our Common Wealth).

Smaller government for a large country is just plain crazy. This is not back in the times of an argarian society (farmers and small ciites...towns).  Over the years previous  governments (of both parties) have felt the need to set up agencies to monitor and control many aspect of running our "advanced society" and democracy. I want my food and drugs tested for safety. I want  my rights and safety protected. I want my roads and rails safe and convenient.  I  want the people who protected me to be from this country so they go to war to protect me not go against me or some international corporation's self interest (while I pay for it).

To do so on a federal level is much cheaper and efficient.  It is non-profit with Civil Service employees who are qualified and life time experienced.  President Teddy Roosevelt (R-NY) proved long ago that Civil Service prevents "cronyism and corruption in government". Why change that? Party politics won't be important when protecting us.  AND those who break our laws go to jail not get pardoned by a sitting President.

A  Presidential candidate with Kucinich like beliefs (which are like all our previous Democratic leaders...stopping with Clinton's NAFTA and media mergers) is what we need today to get back on track.  Our leaders are very fearful and out to destroy our democracy and way of life for their own self interest.  We never would have attacked so many countries for Empire or tortured to create fear around the world.  It is immoral, illegal, and just plain cruel.  Republicans (and some Democrats who went along) and this President have committed crimes against humanity.

National health care for everyone is the newest policy and mandate we should consider today. People should not lose their homes and life savings (leaving the rest of the family destitute) over health issues. The system is too corrupt to consider anything else. Edward's health plan won't work because everyone isn't included. The rich and power elite have to be part of the system or it won't work.

I have labelled the leaders in power today who only think of the own self interest (religion, wealth, power) and global power (with corporations) as "globalists". They refuse to admit that the WTO and NAFTA are bad for us and the world. World government is Fascism since there is no democracy only tryanny and fear...slavery.  They want it all for themselves even though they prospered under the "American democratic" social system.  Heck with the rest of us. It is abuse of power like this country has never seen. Betrayal and treason.

By some miracle they might wake up and see they are responsible for their own destruction in a country who gave them more than they deserved.  They must be able to see beyond the trees that they are "on the wrong track".

Only Presidential candidates Dodd, Edwards, and Kucinich have policies which I feel are democratic and acceptable over all. They aren't "globalists"...I don't think.

I just wanted to make a

I just wanted to make a quick comment and tell you to focus on your own party until the primaries are over.  I'm a Paul supporter but I'm also realistic about his chances getting past the coming election.  You can misrepresent his views all you want but honestly it's just going to make it so he doesn't win the primaries, which is a lose/lose situation for both the democrats and Paul supporters.

Electing Ron Paul in the primaries insures that we'll have anti-war candidates running for president, you can then decide if you wish to support the liberal ideology or the conservative one.

Ron Paul, as seen through the eyes of Libertarians...

and neo-con Republicans, seems to be an upright specimen. It is only when one delves deeply into this wacked-out religious fundy that the manure hits the fan.

Home Schooling: He wants us all to do it.

Science: Despite being a DR., he is opposed to it. HIS brand of homeschoolers do.

Public Schools: He wants prayer in all schools. He wants the Bible taught in all schools. He gets pretty rabid in these areas.

Choice: He is one of the most vindictive opponents of Choice that we have in the present government. Like Kucinich, he is pro-birth. Kucinich found during the last election, that he had to flip-flop on choice.

Education: He likes the way kids are educated in Texas--taught to the test.

His attitudes about home-schooling would bring about a catastrophe in public education.

Like Grover Norquist, Paul would like to see the Federal Government shrink to the size that it can be thrown into the bathtub and drowned.

Paul is not an acceptable candidate to those of us on this site.

Not sure Ron P "groupies" are aware of his positions

I'm so glad to see this discussion because it is clear to me the Ron Paul top people don't want their followers  to "think" or  hear any discussion that goes deeper than his anti-war and constitutional stances.

I think it is important that he is discussed here because he is the only anti-war Republican and a lot of young and uneducated people are falling for the hype around him and don't understand what LIBERTARIANS are really about.

I've seen UTube video of all these U of Michigan students all pumped over him and they are all caught up in the "groupie" belonging to a new and what they believe is a cutting edge movement.

As I told you, don't underestimate his grassroots campaign which just came up with ONE MILLION dollars in a week.

This is time for me to stick my neck out...

Gazing deeply into my crystalball, the entrails of pigeons, blood from chickens, and a real attempt to sort this nominee thingy out, I have come to the conclusion that:

Our nominee will be Clinton or Obama.

The also rans: Biden, Dodd, Kucinich, Richardson, Gravel. These guys would do better to spend their time getting their gardens in shape for winter.

Haven't a clue about our friendly opposition. For some as-yet obscure reason, Fred Thompson seems to have attracted the most attention--perhaps it is the Joe Six-Pack effect--Thompson obviously knows almost nothing about anything. Hmmmm, on the other hand, what Repugnant does? Yet he seems to have to highest ratings so far.

Ron Paul, like Dennis, has a small group of followers who are solidly behind him(possibly to let him take the flack from Satan).

Bad news for the Repugs, Keyes, by entereing the race, has caused the Religious Right to seriously consider forming their very own Jebus party. LOL, they have been the stalwarts(emphasis on the warts part.).

Guiliani cannot be sworn in wearing a gown so he is out. Bomb Bomb McCain lost it when he called America a Christian nation.

It is time for uys all to sit back and watch the final fireworks.

Try injecting some humor into your replies...just to entertain the 'wolves at the door" who will surely show up to disagree.

Our candidates: Clinton or Obama.

"Our nominee will be Clinton

"Our nominee will be Clinton or Obama."

What makes you so certain or is this just based on your signature message?

If this is already a done deal as of October 1,what is the point of further discussion?  What are we here for?

In fact, that makes me believe that you and perhaps  this website have resigned themselves to what the media has decided for you and just disregard  what the people may actually want.

I think that is why Colbert wants this online vote at www.unity08.com

The sig line to which you refer...that quote was by ...

Louis Pasteur. Both sig lines are aimed at a specific group of people who usually neither read it nor understand it.

I attempted to say something in my post. Unless the apple cart falls over, the numbers and the sentiment all indicate that quite simply, that either Clinton or Obama will be the nominee. I'm sure that you have seen all the numbers. They are not swinging or indicating swinging in any direction.

By the way, I do not in any way represent this website. For example, where are the people who see this contest differently. Kucinich is still locked in at 3%, Paul is locked in at 1.5% and the rest of the names I mentioned as also rans vary from near 0 to a mighty 4%. Only one of these folks has any war chest to speak of.

There is always the chance of a Gore entering at the last moment...or some other candidate suddenly catch fire, but other than miracles like that happening, the crystal ball says that the two prime candidates are Clinton and OBama.

Both of these leaders do have a penchant for falling flat due to their own actions and inactions. The recent vote to make of the Iranian Guard a terrorist: Clinton--Yes, Obama--avoided the vote. There certainly is a choice there. In effect, Clinton approved Bush invading and/or bombing Iran. Obama neglected to vote showing that he either cannot make decisions about letting Bush do his thing and does not want to be responsible.

Richardson has a war chest of about 18 million. He could suddenly catch fire. Coulda, woulda, Shoulda. Aside from these few exceptions, Clinton and Obama have the money, the organization to dominate the media, and have people out in every state working for them.

The logic here should be evident. Have you a better and more realistic set to fefute my stance?

You might, for example, come up with a realistic set of facts to support whatever your take on this is. Thats what the site is for after all.

A mind once expanded can never return to its original dimensions.

Thoughts on Kucinich, Hillary & Chris Dodd

I'm becoming very concerned that besides being minimized by the media (like Senator Dodd and Ron Paul)   the Kucinich campaign doesn't seem to be organized and if it is correct what Grinch said  that all he had to do is send $30 to attend that steak dinner, something is seriously wrong IMO.

The other day I took this Presidential test and Senator Dodd came out on top as the best candidate for my views and I was very impressed with what I heard him say  in the last  debate.  Is there a discussion here I am missing?  I thought he displayed leadership qualities  I really haven't seen with the top tier and he  comes across as very Presidential with a lot of experience to back him up.  Take this test and you might be surprised who most closely reflects your POV.   http://www.wqad.com/Global/link.asp?L=259460 It's obvious media is selling us Hillary and while she has probably been good senator for New York, personally, I don't think a big portion of the country is ready to let go of their hate for the "Clintons" and given the current crisis in the mid-east, as much as I think a woman is perfectly capable and probably innately better at conflict resolution, given the dynamics of cultural realities on the ground,  is this really the  time for for America to have a woman President to go over and negotiate with all the male leaders in the Mid East?  This is an example of how Americans try to put our values on other cultures.  While it is a mistake to believe woman are seen as mere chattel in Muslim cultures, it is extremely new and rare for women to be in a top leadership role and we need someone who can really command respect and credibility of representing all Americans. What I'm seeing is that  Hillary is under tremendous pressure to  prove she is tough and not afraid of making the "hard decisions" on war and peace; and therefore more inclined to take stands that make me wonder if we will end up with Bush lite.  On the other hand, after watching the last debate, I saw Senator Dodd just saying it like it is (without being devisive) and I believe he has a huge record of accomplishment to stand on  in terms of  putting his promises into action.  I do know that the first responders are behind him Big Time.  Thank God they see through Guliani.   I just found out he was about to be impeached before 911 as he was that unpopular in New York.

In case anyone would like to debate:

Libertarians do NOT exist.

Conservatives do NOT exist.

I speak here of the political variety, not a fellow American's emotional/intellectual LEANINGS.

Conservatism is FALSE.
Libertarianism is FALSE.

Demonstrably, scientifically, FALSE.
