Keep Space for Peace Week - Oct. 1 - 8, 2006 –
International Days of Protest to Stop the Militarization of Space

Space - A Global Commons to Benefit All -
NOT the U.S. Domain for Pre-Emptive Wars & Domination

U.S. war planners have been using “space assets” to fight wars. The use of space for waging war has grown from Kosovo and the first Gulf War to Afghanistan, and in Iraq it has been taken to a whole new level. In their own words: “Precision navigation, timely weather data, critical missile warning and infrared information, surveillance and reconnaissance, and tremendous weapons capabilities – all came from our on-orbit systems that provided warfighting capability in this war like no war ever before…space was not just an enabler but a key warfighting element of the total campaign.”[emphasis added] (Brig Gen Larry D. James. “Bringing Space to the Fight: The Senior Space Officer in Operation Iraqi Freedom” in High Frontier: The Journal for Space & Missile Professionals 1.4, 14-16 2005).

Bring the Troops Home from Iraq - End Pre-Emptive Wars and the Military Use of Space

Information about the Strategic Command’s technologies and plans is complex and full of cryptic acronyms, but it all boils down to U.S. plans for empire and domination of the planet by monopolizing the control of space. Surveillance satellites, radar, laser, nuclear and x-ray weapons are all in some stage of development. Space based nuclear power reactors are planned to power it all. Conventional, nuclear and new weapon systems are all part of the picture. Several corporations – Raytheon and Northrup Grumman among them – have pieces of the contracts pie. Many weapons and war systems are in hidden “black budgets” at the Pentagon. “What we know about is pretty bad; we should be very concerned about what we don’t know.” (Bruce Gagnon, Arsenal of Hypocrisy video, 2003).

Our Tax Dollars and Resources Could Go a Long Way to Invest in the Common Good – Instead of Being Drained and Polluted by Feeding War

These high tech systems and weapons come with a very high price tag. These billions are being stolen away from education, health, housing and positive solutions to world problems that would benefit the majority of us. The dismal government response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster exemplify where resources are NOT being allocated.

What We Can Do

Oppose the building of a perpetual war system, and the many weapons and war-making allocations. Support positive legislation like:

- HR 2420 – Space Preservation Act of 2005 introduced by Dennis Kucinich

- HR 373 – For Nuclear Non-Proliferation & Disarmament introduced by Lynn Woolsey
