Greg Palast says Kerry won Ohio

I don't know if Palast is right or wrong. We all know there were serious problems with the election, and the blogosphere is busily examining the data with a fine-toothed comb.

Since we are proud members of the "reality-based community," I strongly believe we should approach this topic rationally, putting hard facts ahead of our beliefs.

But IF - based on solid facts - we can build an irrefutable case that Kerry really won Ohio, then we should fight with all our collective might to have Kerry declared the winner in Ohio, and have Ohio's 20 electors awarded to him, and have him sworn in as President in January.

Kerry Won
Greg Palast
November 04, 2004

Bush won Ohio by 136,483 votes. Typically in the United States, about 3 percent of votes cast are voided—known as “spoilage” in election jargon—because the ballots cast are inconclusive. Palast’s investigation suggests that if Ohio’s discarded ballots were counted, Kerry would have won the state. Today the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports  there are a total of 247,672 votes not counted in Ohio, if you add the 92,672 discarded votes plus the 155,000 provisional ballots.

Bush statement

Here is what President Bush said today in his press conference. My source is CNN.com
Asked whether the support he received during the campaign from religious groups could alienate those who do not share his faith, Bush said that he had no plans to move America toward a theocracy.

"I'll be your president, regardless of your faith," he said. "No president should try to impose religion on our society."

He added, "If you're a Jew, a Christian, a Muslim, you're equally American. That's such a wonderful aspect of our society."

actions would show otherwise

"This crusade, this war on terrorism is going to take a while."

"There ought to be limits to freedom."

"God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them."

"Tyrants and dictators will accept no other gods before them. They require disobedience to the First Commandment. They seek absolute control and are threatened by faith in God. They fear only the power they cannot possess -- the power of truth. So they resent the living example of the devout, especially the devotion of a unique people chosen by God."

"We waited for Congress to act. They couldn't act on the issue. So I just went ahead and signed an executive order which will unleash -- [applause] -- which says the federal agencies will not discriminate against faith-based programs. They ought to welcome the armies of compassion as opposed to turning them away."

Do you have your source. I would just like to see that quote myself. do you have a link to a website so I can see it?

sure....

I don't know which quote you mean but they can all be found here.....

http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/quotes/bush.htm

God speaks to Bush?!?

You quoted shrub, I mean bush, as saying, "God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them."

So does it scare anyone else to know that GWB thinks god speaks to him? It does me! As does the fact that he thinks he is one of "god's chosen." But, of course, he is not a fanatic!

Born again president

To come to think of it, Bush cannot be a "born again" president. To do that he'd have to admit his mistakes in Iraq, eradicate his tax policy and provide a healthy environment for women's rights to progress.

He has not and will not do any of these things so I guess its the same old Bush.

Kerry lost fair and square!

I can't believe Mr. Palast is saying Kerry won Ohio or that the election was rigged! Anyone who honestly thinks so should seek counseling! First off, his argument is about as weightless as the air Pam Andersons head, if you’re going to make some conspiracy theory at least come up with something better then lame math that does not add up. If you take a look at PA, you will see the margin between Bush and Kerry is smaller then it was in OH, with about the same number of voters. Every network but CNN called OH for Bush early on, CNN, and its liberal agenda, was holding out in hopes of some miracle. You can’t argue with a margin over 100,000 votes, you only make yourself foolish. I voted for Bush, bud had Kerry won, I would have supported him instead of posting hateful, conspiracy filled blogs on the internet. Believe it, there are a lot of people who support Bush and there are a lot of people who may not like Bush, but were scared of the thought of another weak president like Clinton. Please, get over it, don’t be sore at your loss, support Bush and lets move on.

Support Bush

Support Bush but don't trust him. I am not for war but when Colin powell warned my Congress that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (a term that seems to have gone to the wayside), I knew that something needed to be done about Sadam.

BUT COLIN POWELL LIED

I gave Bush the benefit of the doubt once and he lied. Hopefully he can redeem himself in the next four years. This is a hope that I will hold close to my heart because the welfare of the nation is more important than grudges against a liar who happens the leader of the free world.

Well Said

I will have to say that I do trust President Bush. But for those who do not, like jmeyer, all you have to do is support him. If he lied to Americans and it can be proven, then I will lose all trust in him. So far, I have not seen facts to say that he or Powell lied and misled the Americans.
We do need unity right now, just like Bush and Kerry have said, we are all Americans, we are all patriotic, we must come together. We can disagree with issues but we can all agree that we are Americans

Well, here is your new lie.

Well, here is your new lie. He campaigned vigorously that John Kerry was lying to Americans when he said that the 376 tons of explosives that went missing in IRAQ had been looted - a direct result of a Bush failure to secure or destroy the weapons. Now today we find out that John Kerry was telling the truth, and Bush lied. Here is the link from FOXNEWS (The Republican National News Network). http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,137558,00.html

Still trust him.

Try this

If this article doesn't make you feel distrust I don't know what will. I'm not a big Dean fan but what he says here makes sense.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO??

That question seems to be answering iteself. Check out everyone's info and you'll notice that most of the members of this forum joined today. We are doing what we should be doing and that is excercising our right to speak openly about the issues facing our country.

Ohio IS Florida

Typical. He couldn't get his cousin to mess up the vote in Florida again. That would be too suspect. So instead faulty voting machines (instead of good ole pen and paper) were used in Ohio and other states along with incompetence and perhaps some backhanded actions (ie: conspiracy/coup).

I'd like to point out that faulty voting machines where blamed four years ago too. Read this article about how ballots machines were blamed back then. And this article written at the same time relates very well today.

Many people will say that everything was done fairly and honestly but the fact is that one uncounted vote means an accident happened while over 200,000 uncounted votes in one state alone (not to mention all the other states where this happened) means something dishonest has happened. This needs to be addressed. If it's whitewashed and forgotten because of some new big confilct, then I hope most of the country responds in some way to bring the focus back to what is important.

I'm so sick of seeing dishonest in politics. I know crooked politician is almost redundant but I don't think it should be.

URGENT! MUST READ- ELECTION A FRAUD!!!

Hello My Fellow Democrats
As we have all learned from this last week's election, the Republicans and Democrats are strongly divided. Unsuprising, we have allowed yet another "close" election to just slide between our fingers. If we have learned from our recent history we would have known that the Republicans are dirty. This should not shock a lot of people seeming that the campaigns were run by Republicans who promote big business and great a lot of palms. I want one Republican to tell me that its not possible that they couldnt grease one palm in Florida to allow an array of flaws pass in our voting process.
1.) NO AUTHENTICATION PROCESS FOR LARGE AND CLOSE STATES, whats to pervent a 'Democratic poser' to assist a republican in voting for 'no-shows'! Isnt Florida a conflict of interests for the American people.
2.) INCONSISTENCIES IN THE VOTING PROCESS. I do not believe for once second those lines in OHIO in a college area was a mistake. I know that when I was in college with term papers, girls, beer and girls. I would not have waited 8 minutes, let alone 8 HOURS!!!!!!!!!!

Rebuplicans are out of touch mid-west inbreds that are easily persuaded and controlled by FEAR!!!! Most of all they are all thats bad in this country robbing the middle and lower class america from a decent living. OUR PEOPLE ARE SICK because there is no AFFORDABLE health care, especially in Democartic states. The margin of victory was so ridiculously close in some states taht I do not think it is a coincidence that this was a 'RECORD TURNOUT' election. BUSH has low people in high places and stole this election from the AMERICAN people! SHAME ON US!!!

D@n «

Your a pathetic person

Calling good Christian people from the mid-west with morals "inbreds" is simpley a pathetic response by a loser. Bush was the first president to win the popular vote by a majority since 1988. Bush also won the electoral college (Which has a purpose and had you paid attention in school you would know what it is) and has the support of the majority of Americans! Liberals are the worst losers and its sad to see your pathetic blog on the internet. FYI: Kerry won PA by a smaller margin then Bush won Ohio by (about same number of voters) CNN was the only network that that did not call Ohio right off, and the only reason was because of the partisian politics of CNN. People need to unite behind Bush and create a better America, as soon as you realize that, you might not be a loser any more!

Name calling is the only defense

Name calling is the only defense I've seen by most people who register themselves under the Republican Party. I wish I knew why this was. Instead of taking issue with points 1 or 2 of the post NewDay just took offense to the other poster's bit of name calling.

How is Bush the first president to win by a majority since 88? Are you saying that Clinton and Bush Sr didn't win by a majority vote?

And what purpose does the electoral college serve in this day and age? Back before the age of lightspeed worldwide communication, satelites and computers I can see the reason for the electoral college. But not now, with the technology we have today.

Now go back to your namecalling...

Where is my new lie? I don't see it...

What are you talking about??? President Bush came out and said that we do not know all of the facts yet. He said that Kerry immediately claimed wrong doing right when the news came out about the missing weapons. He never claimed that Kerry lied. Get your facts straight and then talk..

dump the democrats...

Let's start a Progressive Party....
If you're too wimpy to fight for the rights of the nation, then you shouldn't be running.

I propose

I propose that we do away with the electoral college. In this day and age of technology and communication is the electoral college really needed? Or is it just a vehicle for corruption as each voter is blackmailed or bought to vote one way or the other?

I propose that from this point on all votes are taken on paper; that the votes are tallied immediately by people; and that those totals are sent immediately to a "voter central" where all the numbers are totaled together by human, calculator and computer. And only then, after ALL the votes are counted, do we declare a winner.

I propose that all votes have to be counted by a certain deadline in the entire country. Which means that all provisional ballots must be counted by this date and a winner cannot be declare until that date. It also means all "discarded ballots" must be either redone by the voter or must be given an interpretation by that date.

If all ballots are done on paper and pen or pencil with a definite deadline for all the voting to be done there is much less likelihood of computer program failure or uncounted ballots. Although I don't know about voting fraud.

Perhaps when voting is done this way we will get a fair and decent election.

That'll be the day.

How many states evoted? 26 - 29?

5,000,000 divided by 26 = 192,307.6923~192,307.7
or 192,308 votes from each state shaved
would give Bush a win with 5M delta.

Subtract 2 states, Nevada(B) who has a paper
trail and Pennsylvania(K) with 24 states
possible for abuses, the number increases
208,333.3333~208,333 votes shaved per state
would give bush a win with 5M

Shave more in Florida than elsewhere.
If citizens in these e-voting states
do not demand printouts they will never
know if their votes were shaved.

I believe Kerry won also

With all the new voters voting for a change. Plus, the mess bu$h has gotten us into with higher taxes for working class citizens, the ongoing wars, and it's been proven for OIL, loss of jobs, coroporate Americans paying more taxes and corporations moving overseas, lies and lies with more lies from bu$h, more to come, cheney being in "an undisclosed area" long before campaigning, secrecy within our government, bu$h knowing about 9/11 before it happened, bu$h embedded with the Saudis, 2000 "election" stolen, that was proven Gore should have been our president - after they finally counted all the votes, the planned wars since 1999. This whole mess was planned before 2000. bu$h wanted the presidency for corporate America, oil and world dominence, he got it with stealing our rights and changing the colnstitution to his way. Bet he'll award himself at least another term in the white house.

He stole this election also. We can't prove it, that's the problem. We sound like poor losers but we know they stole it, so do they and they're proud of it too. How many more will be stolen? The media is paid off. bu$h could murder someone in the street in broad daylight and it would NOT be covered by the media - if they did, it would be justified. bu$h can do wrong. He's always got his way. He's a spoiled rotten rich kid and nobody says no to him. He always wins, even if he has to cheat - he wins!
s

Proof???

It is easy to make all of those accusations, but where is your proof? You say that the wars are for oil? Where is that proof? Did you get a check for a tax refund? I sure did and I am definitely not in the top tax percentage bracket. I saw a tax decrease. For everyone who claims that state taxes have increased, I say to you that there is a difference between state and federal government. Where is your proof that Bush knew about 9/11 before it happened? That is a dumbfounded accusation (not trying to be disrespectful to you at all). Where is is proven that Gore should have been our President? Give me solid evidence, not evidence that you get off of a left leaning website. Don't give me any conspiracy theories either. Where is your proof that this was all planned before 2000? I would really like to see it. Don't misunderstand me. I am completely serious. If you have the proof, I would love to see it for myself. If I am convinced, then all of my support for Bush will go away. Have you seen the number of jobs that have increased in the last few weeks? That is fact! There is proof for that. Please provide some proof to me before making wild accusations!

He has been on the attack for

He has been on the attack for a while.
How can the public make sure Bush is impeached?
Re-elect him, or let him get away with
shaving votes.

Impeachment sounds good.

For the many people crying all over the world
that this man seems to have been re-elected
the true payback would be IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS
WITH A GUILTY VERDICT FOR HIS ENTIRE ENTOURAGE
THAT MISREPRESENTED THE AMERICAN PEOPLE FOR THIS
WAR.

Mathematical Theory,, please see my post

How it was possible in Ohio!!!

I think the guy is referring to the Perot & Nader factors

In 1992 & 1996 Ross Perot ran for President against Clinton. In 2000, Ralph Nader ran against Gore. In 1992, Ross Perot got 19% of the vote. In 1996, he got a smaller margin - 8.5%. In 2000 Nader for 2.7%. There are of course other candidates that run as well, and typically "the rest" poll 1%. In a "first past the post" system, you only need to have more votes than anyone else - not to have got a certain percentage as well. The 1992 case is obvious - if 20% of the electorate are voting for someone else you only need 41% of the vote in order to win.

Mark.

Start looking forward

Here, there, everywhere, I see griping that Kerry won Ohio, Kerry won Florida. All over this site, and its counter-productive. We griped for the longest time about 200, when we knew we won the popular vote, and that Florida had only been decided by the supreme court.

This time, we know we lost the popular vote. Bush won by 3.5 million votes. Instead of making these pointless complaints--however true--a more useful activity would be to try to figure out WHY we lost, because we did lose--if not electorally then certainly by popular vote.

Regardless of who really won, the important thing for us to do is look to and work for the next election, rather than sit on our asses and moan about voting irregularities.
