When the Raygun/Gingrich neoconservatives and their pawns, the religious-right theocrats, began their pointed and highly focused campaign to demonize the word "Liberal," it was so successful that many Americans shied away from using the word to describe themselves. This campaign to take the country to the extreme right and to disenfranchise American Liberalism, was strongly aided, and enabled, by the New Democrat DLC "centrists" who were trying to pander to these extremists for a few votes and a quid pro quo seat at the Aristocratic corporate table.
The political and social philosophy of American Liberlism hasn't changed over the years, and neither has the majority percentage of Americans who are fiscally Conservative and socially Liberal -- in other words truly moderate Americans. These Middle Americans, as they so often do, fell prey to the constant barrage of media propaganda which was bought and paid for by the corporate-sponsored neoconservative spin machine. Bashing Liberalism became the new American "in thing," based on nothing more than hype by neoconservatives of both the RNC and the DLC. After all, if "Democrats" were abandoning American Liberlism for "centrism," it must have been the right (pun intended) thing to do.
After over two decades of the neoconservative minority proving itself to be not only un-American, but anti-Constitutional, and ineffective in moving this country forward, American Liberals are once again proudly proclaiming their Constitutional heritage and patriotism.
