Rep. Obey I Accept Your Apology - Now TALK With Us About Ending "This Stupid War"

On Thursday, David Swanson posted this remarkable video (transcript here)of Rep. David Obey's explosion at super-polite Marine mom Tina Richards when she asked him about the Iraq War Supplemental:

Today, Obey apologized to Richards via The Hill:

When The Hill contacted him Friday about the videotaped encounter, Obey immediately apologized for getting angry with the woman, saying that his immense frustration about "this stupid war" boiled over.
Of course this is Tina Richards' call, but I would accept Obey's apology because Obey's heart is in the right place and his frustration over "this stupid war" is profoundly felt by all of us.

But I want something in exchange for accepting Obey's apology: I want Rep. Obey to join in a calm and respectful dialogue that will allow us to find common ground to end "this stupid war."

Obey's most important point is that the Supplemental includes language that will end the war.

"The language we have in the resolution ends the authority for the war," he added. "It makes it illegal to proceed with the war. You don't have to de-fund something if the war doesn't exist."
Presumably, Obey is referring to language that
states that the Iraqi government must meet Bush's benchmarks for reform in order for our troops to remain in the region. The legislation sets a deadline for complete withdrawal from Iraq by Sept. 8, 2008, but also states that troops would be withdrawn earlier if Iraqi government fails to satisfy Bush's benchmarks.
The question we have for Rep. Obey is simple: how can that strategy possibly work when Bush will veto the Supplemental or (illegally) nullify that part of it with a signing statement?

If Rep. Obey agrees that his strategy cannot work for that reason, doesn't that leave us with only one strategy, the one embraced by the Progressive Caucus: to restrict the Supplemental to a fully funded withdrawal?

If we were having a calm and respectful conversation, Rep. Obey would find a nicer way to say this:

"We don't have the votes to pass [a resolution]," he yelled. "We couldn't even get the votes to pass a non-binding resolution one week ago. How the hell do you think we're going to get the votes to cut off the war?"
And we would reply: please tell us which Democrats we need to persuade to vote for a fully funded withdrawal. Because a solid majority of Americans want to bring our troops home now, and those Democrats work for their constituents.

Rep. Obey, we are not "idiot liberals." We are the American people, and we want to help you end the war as quickly as possible - if you will only talk to us and work with us as we lobby your colleagues for a fully funded withdrawal.

Rep. Obey, will you join us in this dialogue?

Tina Richards makes an

Tina Richards makes an extremely valid point in this interview when she says that, as long as Democrats keep using Republican "language," it will be difficult to get the necessary votes.

Vote Republican: the party

Vote Republican: the party of deception, corruption, devastation, torture and oppression.

Jesus, when does 'holding their feet to the fire' and 'telling truth to power', become nothing more than beating a horse to run, that is already running as fast as he can +more?

What they did to Obey was disgusting. I'm all for keeping our party leaders,'feet to the fire' and making sure they are doing all they can. At this point, if you are not helping, you are the problem.

How about putting the blame on the repubs and/or the dems that are obstructing the Democrat's plan for withdrawal? Why not project a united front? Why help the repub 'talking points'?

They are delighted in having the main stream media come out every day and tell how divided the dems are and how the 'radical left' is driving the party.

This is one time we need unity. We needed this plan, that might bring together, the 69% that want a reasonable withdrawal.

Remember, if the repubs win in 08, it's not just the war, it's unfair trade, the selling off of the USA, torture, extra-ordinary renditions, spying on Americans, the patriot act back in full force, no checks and balances, the resuming of the PNAC and world domination policies, preemptive wars, and so much more.

ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU, ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY.

It is Obey

It is Obey and other wishy-washy Democrats who are using "Republican language." He shows his true colors when he labels those who advocate immediate withdrawal from the civil war in Iraq as "idiot Liberals."

We are NOT the radical left -- we are mainstream Middle American Liberal Democrats. As Bob said, we accept his apology. Now what in the hell is he going to do about getting us out of Iraq?

Obey the Democrat?

He is a globalist (Fascist). Obey has never said the WTO or NAFTA is a failure.

They want the war for their World Order government. Once they get to DC they lose their "public service" image to become "corporate representatives" with "Faith Based cronyism".

Many "DLCers" want the ME wars for their own religious/political power (and distruction from what I see). They support Bush's Judo/Christian Wars. What are they thinking?

The vast middle in this country are losing power over their democracy and future. Both Israel and Britain aren't doing very well either. All too many democratic world leaders are on the bandwagon. "Terrorism" is used to destroy democracy by those who say they are fighting for it. So Orwellian don't you think?

Have world leaders been paid off/threatened? I get nervous about the behind closed doors meetings by our President/trade representatives. Not a good thing. That's why Congress has power over trade in the Constitution. We have a huge trade deficit. We certainly have to find those missing trillions some where.

Their "Faith Based Cronyism" is also causing the powerful clergy in this country to support religious strife and agenda. They are influencing the Congress.

Obey is always up on CSPAN demanding a balanced budget. I agree with him on that issue. Has he realized the wars/military complex fraud are part of the debt? His war support destroying us and other democracies around the world?

Rove the RWer party member of lies

was on CSPAN yesterday talking to the Clinton School. He doesn't even have a college degree or know how to run a democracy/government. All he knows is what wiseoldgranny says above.

When there is trouble with the citizens, they seem to get speaking engagements to white wash themselves.

Rove of all people should be removed if Bush kept his promise to have the most ethical/compassionate administration.
