I am worried that we are setting up ourselves to fall
again this time in Iran. The Carriers are an impressive
show of strength. However, the problem is that the
nuclear production capabilities are underground and we do
not have bunker-buster bombs that can destroy these
facilities. Also, an airstrike would strengthen Ajmenijab
of Iran and set-back the REform Party that actually
gained seats in Parliament.

Naval fighter/bomber strikes would keep the air clear of opposition air power. We do have bunker buster bombs...but they are generally delivered by C-130 aircraft--protected by the Naval fighter support. The C-130 aircraft could operate out of the finished 8-9 bases that we have operating in Iraq at this time.

A Naval expert, some months back(I forget the name of the individual), claimed that to be successful, at least 4 carrier battle groups would be necessary--five would be preferable.

It behooves us all to watch for the movements of all our carrier battle groups.

Interview with Noam Chomsky on the current Middle East crisis

Shank: How can the US government think an attack on Iran is feasible given troop availability, troop capacity, and public sentiment?

Chomsky: As far as I'm aware, the military in the United States thinks it's crazy. And from whatever leaks we have from intelligence, the intelligence community thinks it's outlandish, but not impossible. If you look at people who have really been involved in the Pentagon's strategic planning for years, people like [retired US Air Force colonel] Sam Gardiner, they point out that there are things that possibly could be done.

I don't think any of the outside commentators, at least as far as I'm aware, have taken very seriously the idea of bombing nuclear facilities. They say if there will be bombing it'll be carpet bombing. So get the nuclear facilities but get the rest of the country too, with one exception. By accident of geography, the world's major oil resources are in Shi'ite-dominated areas. Iran's oil is concentrated right near the Gulf, which happens to be an Arab area, not Persian.

Khuzestan is Arab, has been loyal to Iran, fought with Iran, not Iraq, during the Iran-Iraq War. This is a potential source of dissension. I would be amazed if there isn't an attempt going on to stir up secessionist elements in Khuzestan. US forces right across the border in Iraq, including the surge, are available potentially to "defend" an independent Khuzestan against Iran, which is the way it would be put, if they can carry it off.

Shank: Do you think that's what the surge was for?

Chomsky: That's one possibility. There was a release of a Pentagon war-gaming report, in December 2004, with Gardiner leading it. It was released and published in The Atlantic Monthly. They couldn't come up with a proposal that didn't lead to disaster, but one of the things they considered was maintaining troop presence in Iraq beyond what's to be used in Iraq for troop replacement and so on, and use them for a potential land move in Iran - presumably Khuzestan, where the oil is. If you could carry that off, you could just bomb the rest of the country to dust.

Iran has brought its war games maneuvers over the past year into busy shipping lanes in the Straits of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which two-fifths of the world's oil supplies pass, the top U.S. Navy commander in the Mideast said.
The moves have alarmed U.S. officials about possible accidental confrontations that could boil over into war, and led to the recent buildup of Navy forces in the Gulf, Vice Adm. Patrick Walsh said in an interview with the AP and other reporters in Bahrain.
The carrier USS John C. Stennis - backed by a strike group with more than 6,500 sailors and Marines and with additional minesweeping ships - arrived in the region Monday. It joined the carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower after President Bush ordered the buildup as a show of strength to Iran.

The Straits of Hormuz are in international waters, to be sure, but all along one side there is the Iranian coast. So, it is natural that Iran would have war games there, as we have along our own coasts. Admiral Walsh is concerned about possible accidental confrontations with Iran there, so what does the US Navy do about it?

Reduce forces there, to reduce the likelihood of accidental confrontations?

No. The US brings in another carrier group, and a third on its way--increasing the risk of confrontation, obviously.

Somehow, the US government claims that we are keeping the peace, and Iran is bent on disrupting it!

The legal issue involved was whether the US warship attacked was in international waters, which would have made it an act of aggression by North Vietnam; it wasn't; it was in North Vietnam's waters, making it an aggressive act by the US, which was met by North Vietnam's defensive action. However, my wife's uncle, top legal in State, certified that the ship was in international waters, thereby giving Johnson the legal basis for saying North Vietnam had attacked the US.

Russia warns U.S. on Iran moves

MOSCOW, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Russia's foreign minister Wednesday warned the United States not to take military action against Iran.

"The Russian foreign minister said Wednesday U.S.-led multinational foreign forces in Iraq must not conduct military operations outside the country, including against Iran," the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

"The multinational force in Iraq should abide strictly by the UN Security Council's mandate, which does not provide for any operations outside the country," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the Lebanese magazine Al-Watan Al-Arabi in an interview.

"The escalation of the conflict and its possible spread beyond the Iraqi borders will inevitably result in catastrophic consequences and not for the Middle East alone," Lavrov said according to the report. "I believe Washington understands this."

George Galloway warns of the war with Iran

We’re not just marching on Saturday to stop the war we are already in. We stand on the brink of an even more catastrophic war.

You might think that after the disastrous way this war turned out, it is inconceivable that the same people would start another. Well, think again.

Look at the disaster in Vietnam. The US government was sinking into the pit they dug for the three million Vietnamese whom they drowned with chemical weapons, whom they bombed remorselessly 24 hours a day.

They didn’t decide, “We’re in so deep we have to get out”. Like a crazed gambler they decided it was double or quits, to bet the farm on another war in Laos, in Cambodia, and another four million people were killed as a result.

Those people at the top today are contemplating another war.

Foreign secretary Margaret Beckett was invited to say as her predecessor Jack Straw had said, that an attack upon Iran was “inconceivable”.

She declined the opportunity to say so, preferring the weasel words, “Nobody is contemplating an attack on Iran”.

But of course they are contemplating it. The Israeli air force is practising on a weekly basis, flying to Gibraltar because the distance from Tel Aviv to Gibraltar and back is exactly the distance from Tel Aviv to the targets in Iran and back.

They’re using Gibraltar as a mock target point for the bombing runs on Iran.

Bushit, running rampant. They must move now, the calvary must move in and fire, not sit there primping and posturing the polite war to say Enough is Enough, and order a firm mental evaluation of President Select George Walker get us into another war without permission Bush. You have the People's blessing and yet you procrastinate on a swift moving justice in apprehending these War Profiteers, killing our children serving in the Middle East, NEEDLESSLY and might I add RECKLESSLY, while Osama Bin Laden gets more and more time to complete some major attack.

US generals ‘will quit’ if Bush orders Iran attack

SOME of America’s most senior military commanders are prepared to resign if the White House orders a military strike against Iran, according to highly placed defence and intelligence sources.

Tension in the Gulf region has raised fears that an attack on Iran is becoming increasingly likely before President George Bush leaves office. The Sunday Times has learnt that up to five generals and admirals are willing to resign rather than approve what they consider would be a reckless attack.

“There are four or five generals and admirals we know of who would resign if Bush ordered an attack on Iran,” a source with close ties to British intelligence said. “There is simply no stomach for it in the Pentagon, and a lot of people question whether such an attack would be effective or even possible.”

A British defence source confirmed that there were deep misgivings inside the Pentagon about a military strike. “All the generals are perfectly clear that they don’t have the military capacity to take Iran on in any meaningful fashion. Nobody wants to do it and it would be a matter of conscience for them.

Israel seeks all clear for Iran air strike

Israel is negotiating with the United States for permission to fly over Iraq as part of a plan to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.

To conduct surgical air strikes against Iran's nuclear programme, Israeli war planes would need to fly across Iraq. But to do so the Israeli military authorities in Tel Aviv need permission from the Pentagon.

A senior Israeli defence official said negotiations were now underway between the two countries for the US-led coalition in Iraq to provide an "air corridor" in the event of the Israeli government deciding on unilateral military action to prevent Teheran developing nuclear weapons.

"We are planning for every eventuality, and sorting out issues such as these are crucially important," said the official, who asked not to be named.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Vice President Dick Cheney landed in the U.S.-allied Arab monarchy of Oman on Sunday and went directly to talks with its foreign minister, Omani government officials said.
 
A U.S. embassy spokesman in Oman declined to detail Cheney's plans or the focus of his visit to the sparsely populated oil-producing state, which allows the United States use of four air bases. But an Omani government official said Cheney was to discuss regional security issues, including the U.S. standoff with Iran over its nuclear program. The official, in the capital Muscat, spoke on condition of anonymity because he was unauthorized to speak to the press.

Oman sits across the strategically important Strait of Hormuz from Iran, through which two-fifths of the world's oil passes.

The sultanate allows the United States to use the air bases — including one just 50 miles from Iran — for refueling, logistics and storage of pre-positioned military supplies. Little has been revealed publicly about U.S. military ties with the reclusive country, a deeply sensitive topic inside Oman, an isolated country on the southeastern corner of the Arabian peninsula that has been a quiet U.S. military ally for decades.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has launched its first satellite into space, ISNA News Agency reported Sunday.

The Head of the Aerospace Research Institute, Mohsen Bahrami, said a locally-made satellite system named Kavesh (search) had been launched.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has planned to launch a total of five satellites into space to improve local telecommunication.

UK doubles naval presence in Persian Gulf

Britain’s senior naval officer in the Persian Gulf has revealed that Royal Navy deployments in the region have doubled since October in a build-up that matches the rapid escalation of American maritime firepower.

Commodore Keith Winstanley, who serves as deputy commander of coalition maritime operations for US Central Command, has told The Daily Telegraph that British trade and strategic interests dictate the necessity of a high and sustained commitment to patrol the seas around the Middle East.

“If you look at the UK component we have almost doubled it,” he said in an interview aboard HMS Sutherland in Mina al-Salman port.

Nineteen countries belong to the coalition led by US Admiral Patrick Walsh and his deputy, Cdre Winstanley.

Maps at the command centre show the position of 45 naval vessels from the southern coast of Pakistan to the east coast of Africa.

Yep! Is this country the new mob?  We even got our pres as the # one arms salesman.  That oughta get some serious plaques and vacation time.  Yep no worries now!  Way to stand up and be counted reps!  But then I guess if the people are not gonna hold you accountable you just think you can do what ever you want eh.......
