Moving impeachment beyond partisanship

Dear Friends,

We are poised to reap rewards from the extraordinary efforts of the few who launched the campaign for regime change in America. Here in Chapel Hill, NC we have wrestled with the issue of partisanship in regard to the impeachment movement. Our most progressive churches cannot hold rallies or host meetings for PDAmerica or Democrats.com CDIC’s. But they can sponsor impeachment rallies allied to organizations that are Constitutional rather than partisan.

Impeachment is fundamentally a Constitutional issue. If impeachment was primarily a partisan issue, Republicans would not have forced the resignations of Nixon and Agnew in ’74. We need to find ways to harness the rising tide of 60%+/- of independents and 30% of Republicans who are warming to impeachment as the only way to stop the rogue Bush/Cheney regime.

And we need a higher level of coordination among our steadfast founders of the impeachment movement and the many ad hoc organizations blossoming in red states and blue. We need a conversation of key organizers and web masters to outline our tasks and shape assignments among our revolutionary fellowship.

We can meet face to face in DC, St. Louis or elsewhere. Or, if we are ready to don the mantle of Constitutionality instead of partisanship, we can borrow teleconferencing facilities in our churches and schools.

We need the discipline to put aside our irascibilities in a spirit of mutual respect as chiefs among equals. This is the spirit that Jefferson, Franklin and the others learned from the Iroquois. We will need to draw deeply from this spirit to put our fledgling democracy back on the track toward the fulfillment of its promise.

The following reports reflect a North Carolina perspective on the recent events in DC.

Report from DC
1.29.07

On Saturday, January 27th, many of us traveled to DC for what was billed as a peace march, which turned into America’s 1st massive impeachment rally. How many of us? Tens of thousands, according to newspaper reports, 500,000, according to Air America. The NC Independent reported 1, 0000 North Carolinians participated. Many of us marched under IMPEACH for PEACE banners for the 4th, 5th, 6th and 13th Congressional Districts. We had representatives from the 3rd, 8th and 11th Districts participate in a lobbying training workshop at Chevy Chase HS in Bethesda, MD on Sunday, sponsored by UFPJ. 13 of us lobbied the offices of Burr, Coble, Jones, Miller, Price and Watt on Monday.

My take on meetings with advisers to Jones, Miller and Price is that each Congressman wants to end the war on Iraq, but that non-binding and de-funding resolutions, while important symbolically, are problematic in that they A) could expose Congresspersons to charges of betraying the troops and B) Cheney and Bush have both vowed to ignore any such resolutions from Congress anyway.

I came away from DC more convinced than ever that the only way to end the war is to impeach Cheney and Bush.

Tactics

• Connect with activists across North Carolina. There are very active folks beyond the Triangle. There are peace enthusiasts in every hamlet.
• We need to post a statewide calendar for every public event. Greensboro (Mondays) and Winston-Salem (Fridays) have had weekly protests for 4 years, nurtured by hardy souls, often lonely, but much less so now. They deserve our admiration and support.
• Writing to and meeting with editors, legislators, and party officers. Letters to these worthies should be followed up with face to face meetings. Phone calls are usually more effective than emails. If you are like me, I never know when last night’s eloquence turns into this morning’s incoherence. If you want someone to comment on a draft letter, feel free to sign up for GRIM Writers by return email.
• Walter Jones, NC’s most conservative Congressman was the 2nd Republican to call for an end to this war. His aide, Corby Pon told us that only a major grassroots effort will end the war, and to never underestimate the influence of local government on national issues. We need to encourage our local pols to lobby Hackney, Insko, Kinnaird, Price and the others to work for impeachment.
• Republican Senator John Warner’s opposition to Bush’s surge is HUGE. Warner could well play the role of Baker and Goldwater (ala Nixon in ’74) in convincing Bush to step down. Warner joins Republican Senators Brownback, Coleman, Hagel, Smith and Snowe in opposing Bush/Cheney. We will need at least 16 Republican senators to vote for conviction on impeachment charges. Republican Senate allies will need starch from the Republican House membership.
• Plan to spend more time in DC. While regular visits to local Congressional offices are necessary, we need a growing congregation on the national mall. By April we will need daily protests at the Capitol Building. They do not have to start big, but they need to grow. Our campaign should target our resources to reserve campgrounds in the DC area, to stage daily rallies at the Capitol.
• Next Meetings: We need all hands on deck for the 2/10 HK on J Rally in Raleigh, http://naacp.ubernc.com/, 3/17 in Fayetteville and 3/18 in Charlotte. The NAACP Rally is an effort to reconnect the wages of war and racism, effectively severed with the assassination of MLK Jr. We have invited Cindy Sheehan to come to NC, and may use that occasion to bring people together for potlucks, music and conversations.

Strategy
• One scenario is to work in tandem with Congressional investigations the next 3 months to press for the impeachment of Cheney in May, Bush in June, celebrate independence on the 4th of July, and all troops home by Christmas.
• No pardons. We must hold this administration accountable for their crimes.
• Supporting candidates: Biden, Clinton, Edwards and Obama are all trying to catch up with Dennis Kucinich. We need to encourage this race and support a challenger to Senator Dole. Our senior Senator would not return our phone calls. We need a strong woman to challenge Dole for the NC Senate.

Report from DC
2.8.07

Speaking with Congressional staff about non-binding and de-funding resolutions, it seems clearer than ever that the only way to end the war is to impeach Bush and Cheney. One scenario is to:

1. Impeach Cheney for his illegal ordering of no-bid contracts to Haliburton, and other crimes;
2. Force the nomination of a replacement VP and demand a vow of no pardons for any Bush administration member before confirmation in the Senate. Put the squeeze on Bush—if he fails to nominate a suitable replacement for Cheney, then his impeachment would produce a Pelosi presidency.

Convictions would require 16 Republican senators and all 51 Dems.

Victor Kittila, the Viet NamVet who organized Detroit’s weekly protests 4 years ago, has an intriguing theory:

Not only is impeachment the only way to end the war, it is the only way to win the war on terrorism. By deposing our own imperial terrorists through democratic, constitutional mechanisms, we will demonstrate that democracy can work. The impeachment and conviction of Bush will evoke an instantaneous international holiday.

Drumming Bush and Cheney out of office

Steadily rising pressure on Congressional representatives, both at DC and local offices, needs to be accompanied by a siege of Capitol Hill with 436 (including DC) delegations with flags, fifes and especially drums.

Around April, we need to fill up campgrounds in the DC area with rotating brigades from every congressional district to be bussed to the capitol every day Congress is in session until convictions are won.

Rebuilding Iraq

Resources must include fines and forfeitures from convicted war criminals in addition to a steep war profits tax.

International labor organizations can assist Iraqis and international volunteers. US Labor Against the War (USLAW) has been laying the ground work with Iraqis for the last 4 years.

Now that an Out Stategy

Ride them out on a rail with rusty nails. This fool has started war number three. If conde says the Iranians knew how we felt abou their nuclear capabilities, than doesn't Korea know how we feel about their nuclear weapons? I don't think he's gonna stop with just the middle east. His next little stinker may be the far east. Impeachment has just been put back on the table.

Resignations of Agnew and Nixon

were not enough. They should be held accoutable for crimes just like any other citizen (which they are under the law).

Ford illegally pardoned the Nixon gang and Nixon (no impeachment but resignation) when no President (especially of the same party) is allowed to pardon high crimes and misdemeanors of any "official". Pardon by a President for citizens in jail, etc. is a different case altogether. "No one is above the law even the President".

Ford took powers not his to increase the Executive power.

Because they were not held accountable in the Ford administration (forget the past look forward), they came back today to commit similar if not more dangerous ones. They murder, rob, and lie yet aren't held accountable? That's why the people would not give Ford an "elected" term of office.

I don't think Ford illegally

I don't think Ford illegally pardoned Nixon because the Constitution says that "The President shall have Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment". Nixon was never impeached so the pardon in my opinion was legal. Now do I think that Ford should have pardoned Nixon, no that was a mistake. Nixon should have been held accountable for what he did but since he was not impeached, Ford had every right to pardon Nixon. And as you said that probably hurt Ford from getting elected by the people.

Impeachment by Ford

John Dean does not agree with you. Crimes and misdemeanors were committed by "officials" in the Nixon administration but left unpunished.

You can't pardon someone who has murdered/robbed/tortured so many. Nixon should have gone before the Hague for his crimes and genocide in S. America.

Nixon was not impeached or had a trial for his crimes. It was not brought before the House or a court so it was not legal/illegal anything.

Ford had no ability to pardon anything without even knowing what Nixon had done. He just waved his hand like a god..and said, go forth and thou shalt be pardoned. Forget all of it and more forward Americans. He was chosen to be President so he would do it.

No one is above the law even the President for high crimes and misdeameanors.

Removal by resignation does not wipe a crime clean for any official or citizen.

That's why our present criminal government doesn't fear punishment. We believe the President has the ability to pardon no matter what? If that were true we would become a lawless nation...which we are right now.

But if we do it, nobody gets pardoned.

I believe that more than one spider has spun webs of deceipt. Therefore, we must initiate and sanitize the Houses to wean out the worms who keep a tail tucked between their butts in 2008. Democrats and Republicans: "Earn that Pay, Earn that pay!" Win back the people by making the President and administration follow the same laws, everyone else has to and hold them accountable. France may have had something there when the nobles were overthrown for spending the people's money on false pretenses and leaving them starving and homeless wondering the streets. Katrina opened our eyes to the hypocracy of donating to charity to help the poor. This guy didn't even mention Katrina once in his State of the Union. How big a slap in America's standards is that? Congress must initiate: "Operation Clean the House" now!

Republicans for Impeachment

What about illegal immigration and refusal to protect our borders? Refusal to pass legislation or to punish employers, etc. who disobey the present day immigration laws?

Is Congressman Tancredo angry enough to impeach? Republicans in New Mexico, Texas, California, Forida, etc.?

Like I said before, we have more in common than you think

A good job that you qualify for doesn't care what color you are. I am African American and this trend has been going on for too long. We have seen it since the "freedom thing" they said we had in 1865. The exclusion of a job, because you require a decent wage for your skill to survive, is very financially painful isn't it? How do you feel being one of the voiceless. I was never one to suffer in silence, and that is why I am in nerve meds. Stupid stuff like letting people cross our borders, give them loans for homes, educate for free (we had to get a Affimative Action law), drive up our taxes to cover them without healthcare, and watch them fill (what you thought until last week) was, your job. Look brothers and sisters, you may not like the boat your in,but we've been in the bottom of the boat. Are you ready to ask for forgiveness and pay our reparations yet? Now they are trying to sign us up for false wars. We African Americans will not go to hell with this country on Iraq. Are you tired after six years, of being ignored, corruption of representatives, eminent domain take overs, energy policy for the rich, killing of our troops and iraqi people through lies and our representatives American citizens effected by disaster left floating on the very soil we fought. bled and died for. How disrespectful do you think the government should treat us before you Do the right thing, so all our voices can be heard once again. Personally, i think it is long overdue for these things to occur to show trust and justice between the races. This government has wronged us too. We always supported your electoral candidates and voted for you. How long is this wrong to stay wrong. Fine the facists and give the spoils toward ending poverty in America. Fine Haliburton, KBR and anybody else mad loot, whoever it was that stole through phoney contracts and fake businesses.

Repub Senator Kit Bond

Repub Senator Kit Bond threatened this week that if Bush doesn't parden the border guards he will start a movement to impeach Bush. I seriously doubt that he will or would, but it is mind boggling that to protect 2 men wrongly imprisoned Bond would threaten impeachment, but for all of Bush's crimes against the Americaan people and our Constitution he says nothing at all!

"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross." ~ Sinclair Lewis

In a time of deception telling the truth is a revolutionary act. ~ George Orwell

Your goal is commendable,

Your goal is commendable, but the "partisanship" you speak of is the result of over a decade of neocon Republican cronyism, and neoliberal DLC "centrism." There is more to partisanship than just political Party loyalty or ideology -- it boils down to graft, corruption, and war profiteering by corporate partisans.

We Democrats have our own nest of neocon corruption, and it is called the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC). They, and the PNAC neocon Republicans, have formed a Fifth Column in our government which trancends "partisanship," and is purely corporate-influenced fascist greed. They are both funded from the same sources.

Until both Parties cleanse themselves of these criminals and enablers, the word "Partisan" has little meaning. We Middle American Liberal Democrats are not fighting with traditional Middle American Conservative Republicans, nor are we playing partisan politics in the traditional sense. We are battling with a cabal of fascists and "New Century" imperialists from both Parties.

These organizations are the neoconservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI), the neoliberal Progressive Policy Institute (PPI), and their offspring: PNAC and the Third Way DLC.

Criminals and Enablers who destroy democracy

It seems to be that both parties, with the help of the media, seem to be having their own race for President right before our eyes.

Their ogranizations and leaders in power forget we choose the next candidates for office judged on their policies and platform. Many candidates don't even bother to see what is of interest to the voters. They have their own agenda and power figures which may not be ours.

CNN news claims people were asking Hillary hard questions about her supporting the war. Did they ask Obama the same? Anyone ask about jobs or the WTO? The Americas Union and if we have a say? Any one question their voting record at all?

It occurred to me that the primaries and focus are in New Hampshire and Iowa. They no longer represent the rest of American voters. The industrial rust belt doesn't get to ask questions about industrial job losses, etc. California and the large cities ask about illegal immigration, etc.

That gave us Bush

I saw a bumper sticker on a republican's car yesterday that said McCain '08.  I couldn't believe my eyes!  How can people be so incredibly ignorant?  It made me wish that someone would make a bumper sticker that said something like:  Republican in '08, because it takes longer than 8 years for you to learn anything.

~Ambrose Bierce, 1842-1914, American Author, Editor, Journalist.

Kim, there is a real problem with what you suggest...

I, and others here are middle-class American Liberals. Democrats if you prefer...and even whatever Progressives are supposed to be(no one really knows to date). Progressive is a label to hide the word Liberal. It is a wussie word no matter how you slice or dice it.

To vote Green would be the 'end of the world.' That is the party who gave you this merry band of baby killers and thieves of a class far above Ali Baba's historic band. To vote Green is to vote PNAC. Waste of a vote. Nader is already shooting his mouth off, not at the Repugs who funded him the last time around, but at the Dems. Always consider his close friendship with Grover Norquist--ah yes...Grover is still in there working for the PNAC/Green crowd.

To vote Indie? Only Indies in the congress are Lieberman(PNAC/DLC/Fascist)and Jeffords. Again waste of a perfectly good vote.

Yer supposed to dance with the PARTY that brung ya to the dance--remember that old saw?

There has to be a way to reach our people. Many of us have tried for six years to do so. Maybe trashing the headquarters of the DLC might get some attention.

The media is owned and paid for still by Rove. They want our leaders to be who they select. The Repugs also want to select our candidates. Thats why all the popularity polls that mean absolutely nothing.

In any case, your vote is yours to waste, no one denies that.

I see your point

As the election comes to pass, I am watching with four eyes. My glasses are on my face when I go to try and rest. This stuff is nerve racking. Think about a candidate that doesn't flip flop or skirt the issues and the answer is simple cause there are only two in the race who really hear the majority of the people.(middle class and poor)Those two candidates are John Edwards and Barack Obama.

That is the choice we should unite on, the ones the people are supporting. Rock Star my arse. It's the voice in the wilderness like John the Baptist. They have what it takes to turn the country in the right direction and keep it that way for sixteen glorious years if we play our hand right.

Think about it.

It's time to get radical

No more talk of who did what during Nixon Ford etc. it's time to let the Democrats in Congress know that we no longer support them. We no longer support Howard Dean. We support a third party candidate and we support impeachment of Bush and Cheney. Not for revenge but for justice.

Wake up America. They broke the law big time and if Pelosi and Conyers will not put impeachment on the table let's take Democrats off the table and support a third party. So you say it will only put the Republicans in office in 2008. At this point I say what is the difference between a Republican and a Democrat that will not impeach lawbreakers?

Pounding sand in a rat hole

That's what you're suggesting that we do here.

How many presidents have Independents elected in the last four decades?

Support a Third Party? Not on your life...

Last time a 3rd party dabbled in politics, they gave us Bush. Wilkinson, go find yourself a 3rd party site to grouse in...that is, if you can find one.

Indies are mugwumps ya know...and we don't really care for such.

I'm with this guy.

I'm with you on this one partner.

Thankfully I Settle in on John Edwards.

Edwards Obama sounds just lovely

The two America's joining to unite the country, oh yeah. If Al Gore won't run, he said he's tired of the Washington Washing Machine that leaves the dirt behind.
On Edwards and Obama they both stick to the people's message. They don't flip flop on issues and acturally think about the issues at hand before opening their mouths in political hogwash to skirt the issues.

The more I think about it we have enough qualified democrats to aid in the prominent positions to end this war too. Wesley with Colon. Poor Colon all he ever wanted to do was serve his brainwashed country and he got played by the administration enough to question his judgement in resolving this illegal bloody mess. They got rid of him because he argued back at Renfield, the vampire's who are sucking this country dry, flunky.

Yeah, the more I think of Hillary's uncertainty doing the people's work, the more I think about it,the poor mill worker, and mixed race candidates may be just the clay God needs to mold this country into his work.

You try and think on it, I'm sure you'll have the right choice as I just have.

No more wishy washy governmental candidates. You gotta know, not leave yourself open to suggestion.

Can't do that, election too important

We got a lot of cleaning to do and as much as the two parties piss me off. I'm not gonna jeapardize any of the hold we just got back. Maybe if you can get more than one (Nader Darth Vader) the vote stealer. We can't afford at this time to allow another rubberstamp Republiklan congress to finish this administrations agenda. They have already stacked the Supreme Court, to do so. I have a question for you? "What is an enemy combatant? It's who'll we the American public will be, if we don't stop them. They are almost there, I can feel it and I'm phychic. We have this chance and we have to work it without third party glitches now. If you really want to help, run some third party candidates for the congress. We could use a stronger change in the SS American Titanic. There's about to be a mutiny in there ranks.
