Anyone knowJust wondering if anyone knows or heard of a middle class candidate that won the presidency?? It seems to me that all former presidents come from wealthy families.maybe that's what the problem is.they don't seem to understand or care about middle class Americans.

Many former presidents were
Many former presidents were born into "middle class" families, but most worked their way up the ladder to become prominent business people, and successful politicians.
The truth is, and has been for many generations, that it takes substantial financial backing to gain elective office in this country, as is the case in most representative democracies. Looking back, most of the Founders were upper class landowners. Earned (as opposed to inherited) wealth is usually a by-product of educaton, initiative, and leadership -- exactly the qualities that we look for in our political candidates.
With the aristocrats (inherited wealth) however, some are social reformers and contributors to society (the Kennedy family), and some are just ideological neocon corporate whores and profiteers (the Bush family). It's a crap shoot.
Charismatic "non-achievers" only gain power in the Third World through violence -- revolution and coups -- and go on to become dictators. Somehow, I like our system better (warts and all)...;-)
May former presidents were..
Bill-
I think when they reach the top in our govenment, they seem to think they want to rule the world. Our power and voice is negated for their own. They become arrogant/criminal/and liars. Is that public service in a democracy?
We have to keep reminding them that it is only a short time term. They aren't there for themselves but to represent the whole system of a democracy. Once they are out of office, they no longer represent us. For one reason or another they seem to be "hanger oners".
Andy Jackson
Was an Indian fighter and a military man. I don't know if that qualifies as "middle class" however.
Some of our greatest presidents who did the most for the people
were rich. FDR certainly cared about people
and did much for the poor. Brought the country
out of our worst depression, ran a war, (paid for
the war) and saved Capitalism.
gave us SS,--the list goes on and on.
Lyndon Johnson(started from humble beginnings) made
himself rich. History will be kinder to Johnson
than the present. That pesky of VietNam War will
just not go away. Republicans have done their best
to discredit poverty programs, etc. Those poverty
programs laid the foundation and the beginnings for
the AfricanAmerican Middle Class we now have.
Truman was middle class and got propelled into
the Presidency by FDR's death. He tried for
for Universal Health Care, but with a Republican
Congress, he did not get to far.
Rich people can be just as caring and sometimes
moreso than middle class. It lies with the individual
and the way they have been taught, their worldview.
FDR also gave us the IRS
Before we heap a pile of praise on FDR lets also remember that FDR also came up with the automatic deduction for parole so the government gets their cut of your paycheck before you get it. Before that, people actually had to write out a check to the IRS to pay taxes, and subsequently the government was much smaller and more efficient. We now have a huge government that spends all of the money on everything but the poor like a huge military, homeland security, and failed alphabet soup organizations like FEMA. FDR might have brought us Social Security but he failed to come up with a way to fund it correctly and keep it solvent. I think history will ultimately judge him to be a good leader but a poor economist. I am a Blue Dog Democrat and what I want more than anything for our party is to hire some good economists to build into our platform sound economics so that we don't get screwed down the road for coming up with programs that will bankrupt the country. Let us not forget Hillarycare, which I believe helped turn the country against us bringing the Repugs to power.

There really isnt any problem with social security that couldn't be fixed by removing the cap on salaries and capital gains.

SS worked just fine until
SS worked just fine until the Republicans started monkeying with it, and introduced the Raygun "trickle down" theory of economics.
That led to the virtual elimination of company pension plans (and the rise of Enron-like metldowns), and the loss should be made up by higher employer SS contributions, along with removal of the caps.
And lastly, FDR's concept of SS was never meant to provide a full retirement "pension," and was introduced as insurance -- which is exactly what it is. It is meant to supplement savings and pensions.
As for IRS "parole [sic]" deductions (I think he meant payroll), they have proven beneficial to both the government AND the average citizen who would have trouble coming up with a lump-sum payment at the end of the year. This is a standard Libertarian non-issue.
The real benefit of SS was brought home to me today...
survivor's benefits. No one ever talks about those. Not a matter of saving for retirement.
My eldest son died yesterday from cancer. He would have been 49 this coming Saturday.
Because of survivor's benefits, his wife and two boys will be able to stay together in their own home with all that that means to ordinary people.

We understand
and it is ok, no need to explain.
its hard to not get personal when so many things in politics touches our real lives. We are all living this administrations policies.
Grinch, please accept my,
Grinch, please accept my, and my family's, condolences on your loss.
I am so sorry...
My mother always said that there's nothing harder than burying your child. My thoughts are with you as you and your family deal with the loss. It is a relief to know that his wife and kids can keep their home and stay together. I'm sure that made his journey easier.
I'm thinking about you, Grinch. Always...

very sorry for your loss, Grinch
I'm very sorry to hear about your son. It must be very hard. I can't imagine loosing my son. It must be awfully hard for everyone involved. I am glad that the family will have a roof over their heads. That base level of security is so very important.* Without it we can't move up to meet other needs. So true too. I lived thru that. Indigent...the whole bit. So glad they have a safe place to live and I hope they find other resources needed to help them make it.

I
Am very sorry for your loss also grinch.
Oh, Grinch, I am so sorry for your loss.
I'm sorry I never saw this until today.
I can't begin to imagine the pain of losing a son.
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
SS is part of a three legged stool
to supliment savings and pensions. That three legged stool of retirment no longer exits. Savings at 1-2%? Pensions gone for debt from mergers and hostile take overs...huge CEO bonus and life time pensions, etc.
Blue Dog Democrat
Social programs didn't bankrupt our country. War (profiteering/ corruption/lies), bad trade policies, military industrial complex, tax cuts to international corporations (who keep profits off shore) so they don't pay us, and tax cuts to the very top elite did.
You can't spend more than you bring in...that's good economics.
We are a huge government whose taxes aren't the highest in the world. Smaller government is not a better government if they are to inspect our food, make sure our air and water is clean, do education, build highways, dams, airports, ports, and protect our country and its borders. That big federal government which you so hate brought us the best standard of living in the world.
Get real...it's the hand which feeds you. Your good pay, pension, health care, and security.
Smaller government meant "privitization" which is govenment given to private contractors (even foreign ones) who lie and steal from us. Teddy Roosevelt made a Civil Service system to prevent that type of cronyism. Civil Service employees are qualified, experienced, life time, and more honest. There is accountability. Bush and Reagan set out to destroy it so they could steal and ruin agency power and thus our democracy.
The best standard of living country in the world is a Social Democratic one...Sweden (at least before the WTO was forced on them). I'd say they live better and are happier. Now let any Blue Dog Democrat top that.
It's poor management/responsibility by Congress allowing this President to do as he pleases with our tax dollars. You made this President a dictator on lies about 911, WMD, and aggressive pre-emptive wars. You also allow him to do trade deals behind closed doors which may not be in our best interests.

I know they should blend more to feel the pulse of real America
I had a big laugh with my husband the other day and perhaps you can identify. My husband said The richman's hell is the fear of poverty. I said I wish when they impeach Cheney they put him in real prison with real Big Tyrone. Thn What if Bush had to live on disability for being mental of only $630.00 after working all his life. Just the vision had me in tears.
The image
Of Bush in the loving embrace of "Big Tyrone" brought tears of joy to me. Oh for justice in this life.....
One can of Whoop arse, coming up King George!
All right now Democrats, I've been supporting ya'll because I like me, you love all of America. Like me you care for all the people by making compromising laws to help and include all. So are you like me when I say, like my boy Bill Maher says:
ITS TIME FOR "NEW RULES!"
no more "Fun with Dick and George" featuring Barney. Enough is enough .
The hell with Impeachment, procecute them all for breaking (too many) laws, profiteering and engineering a false War in Iraq with misleading pick and choose intelligence.
Fom this day forth make a covenant with the American People to walk in God's light, with patience for the downtrodden and love for your fellow human beings on the planet, not just here in our country.
Clean the White House and the planet of the filth and greedicrats that reek the halls of both houses.

Reach out and touch the poor with a helping hand by creating low income Community Rooming Houses Non-Profit that can give them stability and the feeling of accomplishment among peers.
Let's everybody rich and poor clean this mess up before our kids find out how much we got played with the rah rah bush it.
Taxes
Why do many rich people think nothing of paying country club dues and protest paying taxes? I guess because they want to chose who gets membership and don't believe in life and liberty for all.The elitists really hated the fact that FDR betrayed his Brahmin background and stooped to care about the people who were trying to survive the Great Depression. I am sorry to hear about your son Grinch and I, like you, am thankful that social security survives. It can be fixed by raising the cap upon which the contributions are made. It will cost people like me more money but isn't that what America is about. I don't belong to any country club on purpose. Bill, Bush's presidency which illustrates the bad leadership that results when a rich non-achiever is in power sort of makes us a third-world country righgt now. We have to change this.
I too am sorry for the loss of your son, Grinch
I can't imagine how difficult it would be to have any of my children pass away before I did. I will keep you in my prayers and hope you will get through this period of your life all right.
I would like to find out if anyone knows if Social Security money is invested in some kind of good fund nowdays. I think that long ago it was against the law for the government to dip into it but now they seem to be always "borrowing" from it. Why can't they go back to not being able to touch it?
I read a contrarian financial newsletter that says our government is playing the biggest shell game in history with our tax money. You don't even want to know the real deficit numbers they are so huge and incomprehensible. I just don't understand why people don't see these things and get more upset about it all.
