Today's March on Washington.

The crowds were estimated in the tens of thousands.
The numbers could be much higher.

War protesters demand U.S. troop withdrawal
Tens of thousands of demonstrators and handful of celebrities rally in D.C.

Updated: 2 hours, 32 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Protesters energized by fresh congressional skepticism about the Iraq war demanded a withdrawal of U.S. troops in a demonstration Saturday that drew tens of thousands and brought Jane Fonda back to the streets.

A sampling of celebrities, a half-dozen members of Congress and busloads of demonstrators from distant states joined in a spirited rally under a sunny sky, seeing opportunity to press their cause in a country that has turned against the war.

The House Judiciary Committee chairman, Rep. John Conyers, threatened to use congressional spending power to try to stop the war. “George Bush has a habit of firing military leaders who tell him the Iraq war is failing,” he said, looking out at the masses. “He can’t fire you.” Referring to Congress, the Michigan Democrat added: “He can’t fire us.

I was there.

By anecdotal port-o-john evidence, I would estimate the crowd at two-hundred fifty thousand. A busmate, older and far more experienced with anti-establishment activities, was convinced that there were one-half-million attendees.

Moreover, I am fed up to there with protest attendance essentially underreported. What next instead of "tens of thousands," dozens and dozens? Then to publish a photo of three lonely people. This is psychological warfare.

Why do these so-called journalists need to cover-up something? A majority of Americans do not support the war, so these distorters, I mean reporters, don't need to play it safe.

I believe you, beautykilledbeast.

The same thing happened at the May 1st march in downtown LA.

The MSM was reporting 75-100,000. in attendance. It wasn't until
the Spanish language stations reported an accurate 500,000. + that
they changed their tune and reported the numbers accurately.

WTH?

DC 27th Protest

I agree about the number, this was my first ever protest I have ever attended, I could not possibly know with certainty what the actual people count was, But I can say with certainty that it was way more then 10's of thousands, I asked many people on the train ride back to the bus and at the train station what their guess would be for the number of attendees, the answers I received varied between 150,000 to 1 million depending on who you asked, but what ever the answer anyone had, without doubt it was way more then 10's of thousands as the media would have you believe.

Why doe’s the media do this? is anyone’s guess but I can think of a few reasons (1) they could be part of the problem (2) They could be bought and paid for by Government. (3) they them self’s are in fear of the repercussions of the aftermath. (4) it could even be for all we know (law), George W seems to make what ever laws he see fit for his own personal agenda with no regard to anyone or anything as long as his agenda is covered.

For me personally this protest was a very emotional event, on many occasions I could feel myself choke up and could have cried many of times, call me emotional call me crazy call me what ever anyone likes, but that’s just me, I guess the way I look at it is this, knowing myself better then anyone can possibly know me, I don't normally go around getting choked up about things that mean little to me, but when innocent US Soldiers and innocent Iraq's are being slaughtered by the 10's of thousand I tend to get a little emotional.

BTW here is a video I highly recommend seeing I applaud this Lieutenant for his honesty and his true bravery in my book a true hero http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wj0hI4OyF3A

Who has the most to gain from correctly counting protest crowds?

We ran into this lying about crowd sizes during the Vietnam protests. Bettina Aptheker got so ticked, she learned a methodology, did the counting herself, and then reported both the methodology and her results, so that other interested folks could judge for themselves, should they choose.

The methodology was straightforward:  Take a picture of all the heads in the gathering, divide it into little squares, count the heads in several representative squares, and extrapolate.  This is a job we should be able to do for ourselves.  Did the organizers of the 1/27 march take the requisite photos?  Where are they?

Also, thanks for the YouTube link.  Lt. Ehren Watada is a fine, honorable soldier.  I believe he is indeed carrying out his oath to defend our country and constitution.  And it logically follows that those officers who do obey illegal orders are not honoring their oaths.  Consequently, these officers have a severe conflict of interest with regard to his upcoming court martial and should thus recuse themselves from the case.  This, clearly, is a case that cannot be fairly tried by the military.

Lies, Fury, and the Press

One's conscience is a dangerous thing — you just never know when it will spew forth uninvited, as if beckoned by the ancient Pele, goddess of Kīlauea.  Here's a refreshing example:

Epifurious — Books, Lies, and Cheesecake

It's called "Undercount" and "Undersupporting

During all of the Million More Movement Marches the press didn't correctly count or show up because their's is a "i need my job or don't rock the boat until someone else tilts it" approach. I was there too. We had over five million in October 2005. The revolution will not be televised, this is our only drum beat that really guarantees our messages to meet or march. So let's bring our own Camera's and send them in to the stations like LouDobbs or Jack Cafferty. Operation Download needs to go into effect on how the people feel in our marches for a dictoric, treasonous, government that supports only the corporate rich and Wall Street.

Operation Download?

I'm curious, maybe you have a link?  When I looked online, all I found was the Operation Download to provide free music downloads for service men and women in Iraq.

Operation Download was

created as a way to move information on the Impeachment to the Senate, Congress, press or anybody looking for a headline to sell papers on the truth. Sometimes i call the congressmen and ask staff for fax numbers and give them the information to their faces that they chose to ignore. This was achieved by me several times before the election of 2006. Since then I have been everywhere the truth isn't been told on websites and e-mails to spread the word and it will be heard. If you tell it all the time, they will not be able to shut it off.

And the petition just grows and grows and grows.

We are almost there people, keep up the good work. It's working. I heard some of our talk on Tucker. Msnbc is very interested since they were duped too. What does that say when a news station is pumping lies with the administration. Boycott the news stations and news papers like they ignore us when they tell the lies for the administration. Go to PBS, they could use the ratings. At least they check on the stories before repeating it.
