Rice Summoned To Senate Foreign Relations Committee Today
Rice can also expect to be quizzed on the conduct of the war so far, as well as what she intends to do on some sort of diplomatic outreach to Syria and Iran -- you know, given that her job is supposed to be about establishing relationships with other countries that actually benefit the United States and not just about waging war. Russ Feingold (D-WI), a committee member and an outspoken critic of the entire Iraq debacle, will certainly be chomping at the bit to ask Rice some tough questions. "Congress must bring an end to what has been one of the greatest foreign policy mistakes in the history of our nation," said Feingold, in response to Bush's speech last night. "The President continues to deny the devastating impact that keeping our brave troops in Iraq is having on our national security. The American people have rejected the Administration’s Iraq-centric foreign policy. It is time to bring our troops out of Iraq and refocus on defeating the global terrorist networks that threaten this country.” What should also make for some interesting questioning, is a unique dynamic of five announced and possible presidential candidates sitting on the Foreign Relations Committee and acutely aware of how unpopular the Bush administration is with the American people and their chance to ask tough questions at exactly the right time. Sitting on the committee with Joe Biden (D-DE), who has already announced his candidacy, are Chris Dodd (D-CT) -- who just announced this morning -- John Kerry (D-MA), Barack Obama (D-IL) and Chuck Hagel (R-NE). "Everybody is going to want to get their voices heard," said one Democratic aide. "It’s going to be time for everybody to step up and propose ways forward in Iraq." And if Rice is looking for friendly Republican faces on the committee, she may want to glance away from Nebraska Republican Chuck Hagel, a high-decorated Vietnam Veteran, who has been a harsh critic of Bush administration policy in Iraq for two years. Here's what Hagel said just yesterday about the Bush-McCain doctrine of escalating America's involvement in Iraq:
This experience with actual oversight may not be easy for Rice, who has for her entire tenure as Secretary of State appeared before Republican-led Congressional committees more inclined to ask probing questions like "how was your weekend?" and "seen any good movies lately?" so we'll see how this goes today. But Congress actually operating the way it's supposed to and holding the executive branch of government accountable… What a concept. You can read more from Bob at BobGeiger.com.

We Are At The Mercy of Maliki
The key to getting stability will rest with Maliki. The sooner we pull our troops except for a skeleton crew the sooner Maliki can try to excercise some independent authority over his Iraqi
citizens. This process of handing over complete control to Maliki and Iraqi Security Forces needs to happen quickly.
Let's cross our fingers that he can
use his independence from Bush as an asset.
At the Mercy of Insanity
Some say the defenition of insanity is repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Isay the defenition is closer to ignoring common sense to such an extent as to make even some terrorists look credible. This war won't end if Hezbollah is giving out money and building roads while Bush is twiddling his fingers. We need to do more than secure Iraq in order to extricate ourselves from this mess. We have to rebuild it. We need to build hospitals, schools and other necesary institutions to state of the art standards. Sure the terrorists may attempt to blow them up but the people will turn them over to justice. People think American soldiers are the enemy and that's why the insurgents can hide among the population. It's time to catch more bees with honey, but Bush cannot see that. Even if my pacifist ideas are premature, what's the deal with keeping lifesaving equipment from the troops. I'm sure our soldiers would appreciate some of those RPG resistant Trophy fighting veihicles, decent body armor, etc. But these are being withheld. And yet every few moments, Democrats are accused of gutting the military. Truly we are at the mercy of insanity
Condi's Squeak
While I've very little interest in listening to the yadda, yadda, blah, blah spewing forth from Mz. Rice (she's generally on my must-miss list!), in the snippets of her rather robotic chatter to which I've inadvertently been subjected to over the past couple of years, I swear her voice squeaks and changes to a reedy, thin, higher pitch every time she opens her mouth, leading me to get the distinct feeling that she doesn't BELIEVE a single word she utters. Her speech patterns seem to speed up frequently, almost like she has to get all the words out as quickly as possible before she forgets what the hell story she's been told to proffer this time! Hmmmm? I'm just sayin'
