Congress v Muslims

By David Swanson

This article helps explain why I spend so much time trying to lobby other people's Congress Members, hoping that perhaps I share the same century with them. If you can return the favor and are inspired by this article to give Virgil Goode a call, here's his number: (202) 225-4711.

Goode makes complete ass of self
Anti-Muslim letter goes out to hundreds - not all are amused
BY ERIKA HOWSARE, Cville Weekly

Our congressman, Virgil Goode, stands by his anti-Islamic rhetoric: "...If American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran."

Brace yourself for the following letter, shared with C-VILLE by John Cruickshank, chair of the local Sierra Club chapter. Representative Virgil Goode (www.house.gov/goode ) told us, through his press secretary, “I wrote the letter. I think it speaks for itself.”

Congress of the United States
House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515-4605

December 7, 2006

Mr. John Cruickshank
7—— S—————————— Dr.
Earlysville, VA 22936

Dear Mr. Cruickshank:

Thank you for your recent communication. When I raise my hand to take the oath on Swearing In Day, I will have the Bible in my other hand. I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way. The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran. We need to stop illegal immigration totally and reduce legal immigration and end the diversity visas policy pushed hard by President Clinton and allowing many persons from the Middle East to come to this country. I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America and to prevent our resources from being swamped.

The Ten Commandments and “In God We Trust” are on the wall in my office. A Muslim student came by the office and asked why I did not have anything on my wall about the Koran. My response was clear, “As long as I have the honor of representing the citizens of the 5th District of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives, The Koran is not going to be on the wall of my office.” Thank you again for your email and thoughts.

Sincerely yours,
Virgil H. Goode, Jr.
70 East Court Street
Suite 215
Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151

Cruickshank had never communicated with Goode’s office about Muslim immigration or official uses of the Koran. According to Goode’s office, Goode had received a flood of e-mails from constituents in response to newly elected Minnesota Representative Keith Ellison’s declaration that he would use the Koran, not the Bible, when being sworn into Congress next month. This letter was Goode’s response to those e-mails; Goode’s office says Cruickshank received the letter in error.

Goode is all wrong

Mainstream Islam is a religion of peace. I have Muslim friends who oppose terrorism as much as I do. There need be no conflict between Muslims and Christians. Where the conflict does occur is between extreme fundamentalist Muslims, like Osama or Al-Sadr, and extreme fundamentalist christians, Robertson or Goode. Their intolerance of anyone who believes differently than they do is the root of the conflict.

This letter clearly shows that the present conflict is not...

between christians and muslims, but between christians and Democracy.

Obviously, the time has come to propose a simple bill that will require the use of the Constitution in place of any religious document during swearing in ceremonies of any kind at both the Federal and State level.

In the case of this particular nitwit, he himself has sworn to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States...not the bible(any version)or any other religious document.

Until this law can be passed, these mentally-deficient characters will distort and otherwise corrupt the oaths of office that they themselves take.

As for Mr. Virgil Goode Jr., perhaps he should be required to remove the 10 Commandments from his office wall. Perhaps he would consider a tasteful tattoo on his chest and/or forehead listing the 10 commandments and In God We Trust in bold colors. The taxpayers are undoubtedly paying the rent on that office.

Mr Goode: You have sworn to preserve, protect, and defend the US Constitution and nothing else. Obviously, you lied.

I am afraid

That the Muslims are going to have to go through the long road of equal rights as the Irish, African-Americans, Poles, Chinese and Japanese, and just about any other group has struggled through. People forget about the "The Irish need not apply" signs that used to hang in businesses. The sad thing is that equal rights in this country is an ideal that has and will have to be fought for time and time again. The good part is in our country there is a process to fight for those rights it just takes patience to achieve. Just about any ethnicity can attest to that.

Virgil Goode, Congressman extraordinaire

I couldn't help it. I just called Virgil's D.C. office and wished all a Happy Kwanzaa. Even his receptionist laughed.
Unfortunately, attitudes like Goode's are no laughing matter.
