The Party of the Future?

The Democrats lost the House, the Senate, and the Presidency. Deal with it.

The big questions is not what Kerry did wrong, but where the party will go from here. All the "liberal" news organizationsargue that the Democrats have to get back in bed with the Sout. This seems impossible, considering Bush's stranglehold on the region and the Republican lies about being the party of rural America. Theoretically, Democrats could convince the south that they stand for the common man, but i don't see that as plausible against the propoganda machine that is the GOP. So here is my idea -- the democrats should abandon the Red States, and focus on urban centers accross the nation. Consider these facts:

  1. Kerry won the west and east coasts by sizeable margins, and took Hawaii easily. (169 votes)

  2. Kerry polled extremely well in weaker left leaning states, solidifying their strongholds in Illinois, in New Hampshire and suprisingly in Pennsylvania. (46 votes)

  3. Kerry won all of the Upper Midwestern States by close margins, including Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. These states are in the process of evolving their industrial economies into modern ones, (Fareed Zakaria had some interesting analysis on this last night on ABC -- I can't find a transcript though) and as they grow they will progressively become solidly democratic. Ohio follows this trend also. (57 votes)

Combine all these facts, and its obvious that a Democrat can get 270+ electoral votes by focusing solely on urban centers, while still being a contender in Florida, Iowa, West Virginia, Nevada, New Mexico and maybe even be a long shot in Texas (as Austin and Dallas grow in population). A victory in all urban centers, not couting Texas, would give Democrats an electoral sweep of 321 votes.

So why should the democrats be enslaved by the confused population of the South? Why should we have to compromise our liberal values and morals to get 3 votes in Montana? They way I see it, the Democratic party has the ideology of a modernized country -- supporting scientific research, seperating church and state, and focusing on multilateralism to acheive its international goals.

As the rest of the country realizes these truths, the Republicans will gradually lose their base. Consider that the Republicans were viciously condemning social security 60 years ago, and now they promise to save it. It took them 30 years to recover after the country realized that a healthy dose of liberalism could cure the Great Depression, and they will go through such a reformation when America realizes that homophobia, isolationism, and corporate tax breaks are not the answer to its troubles. The party of the stubborn ass has ironically become the party of change -- and now, more than ever, the Democrats should be the party with modern values, waiting for the rest of the country to catch up to them.

Yes* I agree with MODERN :-D

Times Change. People are afraid to let go of old Traditions. :-) But I do believe that with time-- the south will change and catch up with the rest of the country as well. Just think of how the south was 100 years ago.

then again

I am not buying it. I am pretty sure things would have looked different if Jeb Bush was not the gov of Florida.
This is bad. This is very bad, for all the world. But no one should just blame the people of the South and anywhere else for being ignorant. If they are ignorant, then the Dem campaign did not work.
John Kerry is a great man, and his act of conceding victory was noble and brave.
All the American Dems will need to think about it and learn.
God help you, and the rest of the world

THE PARTY OF THE FUTURE

You are so right; we need to abandon the South and focus on urban America. If we wait for the South to catch up we could all be dead by then. If you think of how the South was 100 years ago, it hasn't changed much except for the changes they were forced to make. I grew up in Louisiana, where they still wave their confederate flag and use hatred and bigatry. They are religious hipocrites!

We do "have the idealogy of a modernized country" and we need to focus on the modernized areas. We need to move on and look toward 2008. While I supported and volunteered for the Kerry/Edwards campaign, believe me I'm still sulking, we need to move on.

The future is bright, and maybe this happened to prepare us for 2008, when the stakes will be really high and the moron is out of the way. There are talks of Hillary and even Edwards running for the Presidency. Edwards/Clinton, yes, it's possible. Although, we it will be tough with Rudy Guliani possibly running too, he is a New Yorker that most Southerners and middle Americans can't relate too.

We should not be "enslaved to the confused population of the South." We need to march on, and continue this fight, everyday. We will need to be stronger, more unified, and rally our communities now. We need to continue this grassroots effort that we started to enlarge the our base and gradaully lessen the Republican base.

I'm with you LiberalGirl and The Third Way!!!

New Website for the Future

Well, I partially agree - but we have to be ACTIVE. We have to learn how to talk about abortion, because that's where we lost. We have to learn to effectively communicate that we are not 100% pro-choice. If we do take that stance we lose.

That said, a new website has been started to lead the new wave of the democratic party. Go to: http://civil-values.org and sign up for blogs, forums, galleries and file hosting for a new democratic party. Also sign up for the mailing list to be updated on all the latest activities on Civil Values. The mailing list is here: http://ghscommunications.com/dems

Thanks,

keep our differences

The parties have very different views-- I think that is a good thing... I dunno-- If people want to do something, they will.. regardless of whether it is illegal or not.....

Whether a person agrees with a womans choice when having an abortion, or a persons choice to do drugs.. Some persons choice for suicide-- It really doesn't matter.. when it comes down to it, the person is going to do it regardless.. those things all effect their body.. and thats what they should (and do) have control of..

If you don't believe in something, don't participate in those things you disagree with... Everyone is unique.. But as long as you are not directly hurting someone else (ok... with abortion thats where that comment gets sticky).. it really should not be the government enforcing laws on how you care for your body.

Maybe scientists will come up with a new way to keep the aborted babies alive or something? But that would end up with a lot of adoptive kids-- which is not good because there are so many that dont get adopted... Perhaps more reliable (and safe) Birth Control methods....

I second that notion

We must NOT sacrifice our ideals and values and whore ourselves out to special interests just to garner a few electoral votes. We are not Republicans. Having said this, I am greatly disappointed in the outcome of this election needless to say. There will be time for mourning and contemplation, but we need to refocus as quickly if we're gonna have a shot to take back our country.

We need to give the remaining Democrats in Congress the tools they need to stand their ground and stop the radical agenda that the Republicans will no doubt push on us. We need to support Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer, and yes John Kerry in the Senate. They need our help more than ever.

We need to be quick in exposing the propaganda and the deliberate and malicious lies being spat out by the well-oiled GOP attack maching. Its time to rebuild and refocus. Like John Kerry said at his convention speech, "The sun is still rising, America's better days are still to come. The future is bright". Those inspiring words will help us through these dark times.

Please relize that because mo

Please relize that because most of the south votes republican that this is not the opinion of the entire south. I promise that even though I am from the "red" state of NC that I am as upset as you today with the reelection of "W".

The Dems lost this election;

The Dems lost this election; they nominiated the wrong
guy with the wrong history for the wrong office. I
have always assumed Kerry would lose; that's why I
left the Boards. My quick overview of what's happened
to the Dems: They allow polarizing issues - in this
election, gay marriage - to dissemble their message.
The 'cons do this every time. They do not or cannot
respond to the litany of lies manufactured by the RNC
to persuade the less intelligent, more gullible,
voters to vote NOT for Republicans, but AGAINST Dems.
So it is - and has been since '80 - a culture war,
not a political war. And the Dems at the top refuse to
acknowledge this simple but basic fact. The Dems won't
win back either House or Senate until they change
their philosophic approach to dealing with the Reps,
who are not so much politicians as they are
nationalists/demogogues running on a platform of
eternal war against Humanists..or Liberals, if you
will. Until they do, and utilize the Republican
tactics of hit and hit again, and never run, they will
continue to see their numbers dwindle. The Dems need
to have the top of their powerbase destroyed and allow
the bottom half - the you's and me's who do the very
unrewarding footwork for them - a chance to run the
show, as they have once again proved themselves
incompetent to see the political climate for what it
is - a polarizing culture war that we are losing. I don't see
anything for the next four years but the neocon
consolidation of power and the subversion of all that
Liberals have regarded as the basis for the Dem party
- good jobs, unions, separation of church/state,
progressive social legislation - hey, the whole ball
of wax. Will I fight it - well, maybe, but only if I
see some real changes at the top, and I don't see it
now...but who knows? My wife has been in tears for 12
hours now. Me, I've been preparing myself for this for
months, so I'm just pissed off and pessimistic. We
need a change all right - but it's with the DNC, for
starters.."
