Punishing Sherrod Brown

I recently wrote a letter to the editor for the Columbus Dispatch:

The question of who one should vote for can often be complicated. Personally, this year, it has been a complicated experience for yours truly with regards to the race for United States Senate. The problem is that neither Sherrod Brown nor Mike Dewine deserve to be in the Senate for the next six years.

With Brown’s vote in favor of the War Commissions Act (H.R. 6166) and Dewine’s co-sponsorship of the legislation that will “validate” the Domestic Surveillance Program (S.3931); both have displayed a willingness to compromise our liberties in order to either preserve or advance their own position of power. Respect the constitution these men do not.

Benjamin Franklin once said “Those who would give up essential Liberty , to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” Isn’t it evident that in supporting legislation that violates our fourth, sixth, eighth, and ninth constitutional amendments; both men are too open to betray liberty for “security”? On November 7th, I’ve decided to “write-in” Paul Hackett – the man that the Democratic Party forced out of the primary race – in response to this false “choice” between to faces of the same coin. I urge all readers to do the same.

I've already cast my ballot after having had gone up to my local board of elections and requested my ballot. Whether or not the Dispatch publishes my letter, I have at least sent a message that I will not tolerate this lack of regard for our Constitution. None of us should, and it's time that we stop this abuse from members of both parties.

I am sorry you wasted your vote. I know Sherrod Brown, I have lived in his district my entire life. I don't think you realize to what extent this Republican party will go to win. As Dems we set ourselves up for failure. As a great President (Clinton) once said, "Dems fall in love with their candidates, Republicans fall in line". We expect our candidates to fix everything while still running and if they cast one vote, make one statement we don't agree with, we turn our back on them. Sometimes they have to weigh out things and vote the lesser of two evils. DeWine has ripped everything Sherrod has done good and twisted it. That one vote you are talking about, they voted the same going into the Meet the Press Debate, so instead of Sherrod being acused of voting "for the terrorits" they had to discuss the failure of the Iraq war. I applaud Sherrod for making a tough decision and voting for that bill, although I disagree with the bill. We can't fix anything as long as we are the minority party. They push everything through and we have NO CONTROL to stop them. We need to get elected, then look out and see how many things we can fix, but we can't put our ideals before reality. Then we are on the outside looking in and unable to do anything.

I am also in Sherrod's

I am also in Sherrod's district. I was quite angry at his vote for HR 6166 and I e-mailed him and wrote a snail mail lettter.
I admit to saying I felt I would have to with hold my vote for him.
However, after giving it alot of thought, I realized that was NOT the answer, no matter my disappointment. There was other things at stake here.
We need change here. We need more Democrats in office
to affect a more balanced playing field.
Mike DeWine - a Bush tool - has got to go!
IMO to vote for DeWine, or withold a vote for Brown, simply punishes ourselves, and sets up a continuation of what we've been living with the last few years.
That's the last thing I want to see.

Although it's been a little while...

Since both of you replied to my post, I first want to thank you for your comments.

Don't get me wrong, I was NO FAN of Dewine, and never will be. I wasn't sad to see him lose on Election Day, but I couldn't stomach ignoring the significance of HR 6166. That new law is part of the larger full assault on our Democratic-Republic by a Tyrannical and Fascist Regime. The disturbing fact here is that if a man or woman in government displays a willingness to compromise our liberties in order to attain or retain power; then there is nothing that says they won't repeat that in the future.

How in the hell do you think we ended up with the Iraq War? Democrats in Congress compromised and reliquished their CONSTITUTIONAL MANDATE to declare war in order to either retain or attain power. In fact, Democrats were the MAJORITY in the Senate and had the POWER to stop this illegal conflict, but they COMPROMISED and lost because of their weakness. There must NEVER be any compromise when it comes to the constitution. I viewed a vote for Brown as being no different than a vote for Dewine because both have revealed that power means more to them than doing their damned job in protecting the American people and the Constitution!!

I would rather us stay in the minority than to have our party giving up the fight in defense of truth and liberty for greater power. The old saying is so true; power corrupts. If our party members continue to allow this regime to get away with its crimes in order not to look "too radical" or "out of touch" and "weak", then we might as well count down the days to when the Constitution will become irrelevant in the Right Wing's America.

"As a Christian, I believe that Separation of Church and State is Vital, not only for the People's Protection from an overzealous Theocratic Regime, but also for the protection of Religion from suppression."
