AS A LOYAL MEMBER OF CWA LOCAL 1023-I FULLY SUPPORT ANYONE THAT IS LABOR FRIENDLY. IN NJ THAT WOULD BE PEOPLE LIKE- SEN MENENDEZ, LINDA STENDER & JOHN T. GREGORIO. WITHOUT LABOR UNIONS WE WOULD NOT HAVE OT, BENEFITS, PENSIONS, CHILD LABOR LAWS, THE EEOC, THE 40 HOUR WORK WEEK, WEEKENDS, HOLIDAYS, VACATIONS-ETC.

Yep, you're right on target...
without unions and the benefits they brought and bring, we would have no middle class. It is the formation of the great middle class that made our country really great.
It is extremely difficult to understand why so many so-called Americans fail to comprehend this.
I have belonged to several, one in particular for a lifetime:
Retail Clerks
Teamsters
International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers
American Federation of Musicians, local 47

Welcome to our blog.
We all benefit from unions and they are very
strong here in CA.
Now, we need to get a union going for substitute teachers!
I have suggested this to my supervisor at the district office
but she said it would be " too difficult to organize".
Karin, just simply exlain to
Karin, just simply exlain to her that every Union Local that exists was "difficult to organize."
If it was easy, there would most likely not be a need for Unions in the first place.
Right you are, Bill.
And I will tell her that!
Spot on and welcome to
Spot on and welcome to democrats.com!
Agreed
I come from a union household and am hoping to work union real soon. It would be nice to see a resurgence of union employment in this country.
Stickin' to the union
This talk of support of unions is much appreciated. As a union officer for twenty years I can vouch for the difficulty in organizing members and keeping them committed. In a way, I view right-wing neocons as scabs who have crossed the line to take advantage of the benefits of a democratic society without paying any dues. And I feel that way about Independents and Libertarians too.
Steve, I've been trying to
Steve,
I've been trying to bring back the term "scab", in the context you suggest, for years now. It felt harsh at first, but it is the view Americans have to return to: At this point in history, anyone who votes Republican IS a scab.
I suppose I would only add that you're off the hook (with respect to the scab label) if you bash Republicans for their anti labor stances but lean Republican on other topics. In that case your not a scab, just a jerk ;)
Jim
Jim, harshness needed
Jim
The term "scab" is harsh, but scabs hurt and they need to be picked off. The reason they hurt so much is that they are the cowardly cause of the original injuries to fairness and justice on the job and in society. They selfishly use and abuse our hard-earned rights and then hide behind the law for protection. If I had my way, they would recieve no representation from any union. And so, to carry this notion further, I believe that IF the Democrats regain some political control and power, that all the foul play and terrible damage done by the repugs must not be forgotten. Brotherly and sisterly love is fine and dandy, if it's coupled with strength and the ' harsh ' light of truth.
Agreed! And it is something
Agreed!
And it is something that all Liberals must learn.
Its fine for Democrats to try to encourage loving they neighbor, and speak about the "poor," but far more people's attention can be gotten by a combination of the above and:
-Nobody is "poor" (that makes them sound weak) THEY ARE UNDERPAID!
-If you are underpaid, FIGHT BACK, that is what rich folks do.
Honestly
I don't see how people don't want to stand up and fight for their rights as workers to have some say in pay and benefits and conditions. I was involved in a union vote that failed by one vote several years ago, but my dad worked union for 34 yrs. Now he enjoys a pension that nobody tries to steal, has medical insurance second to none and recieves yearly cost of living increases and Christmas bonuses. Nobody is ever going to tell me that workers banding together to negotiate for reasonable wages and benefits and working conditions is wrong. I believe those poor miners in WV that died a few months back were non-union. You have to be union to get respect from employers.
Yes, respecting strength
A strong union is like a good democratic country, there's a negotiated contract that both workers and managers promise to abide by. That contract for America is the Consitution, Bill Of Rights, and Declaration Of Independence. The current republican management is doing its evil best to destroy that contract and send this country back into the dark age. Democrats are the worker's party, always has been, and only the united effort of working people everywhere can stem the terrible tide of tyranny. Not one single benefit was EVER given to a worker out of the goodness of a boss's heart. Like hard-fought and hard-won freedom. Freedom is being pulled out of our hands by the neocons, and we have to grab it back and step on their neck ! Period. No nonsense compromise. We have to repair the promise and fix the broken deal. And any Democratic candidate for any office who doesn't see that or doesn't have the courage to do that, should be relegated to the scrap heap of history.
Oh
I very much agree as does just about every member of this site. We have these DINOs who would rather pander to Repugs and "Centerist" groups like the DLC than fight for the workers who make up their base. It is time for Democrat leaders (the ones who don't get it) to realize that our party represents the workers, period. The ones who don't need to get the hell out of our party.
