Speak to Values, not Policies

After reading the first half of "Thinking Points: Communicating Our American Values and Vision," by George Lakoff (2006), I hope that everyone who is speaking in support of a progressive political candidate or issue will read this book! It succinctly states the values of progressives and conservatives, the twenty-years of neo-conservative success in designing metaphors which frame polular values, and the failure of progressives to recognize or use this winning strategy. Since I am organizing an effort to initiate a progressive county ordinance, I plan to rewrite all of my materials, using this language and strategy. This book is a clarifying lightning bolt in my murky understanding of the real differences between conservatives and progressives.

This is only a piece of the puzzle.

For example, if you note a Liberals love for his fellow man, and desire that everyone do well economically, the Right will use these VALUES to crucify you. (Let them, but ALSO consider the following.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The answer is broader than simply presenting values rather than policies.

The answer involves presenting policies in ways which jive with the broadest range of personality types.

EXAMPLE:

You may argue for an increase in the minimum wage from the following points of view:

-Its the right thing to do (Those with Liberal Hearts will concur.)

-It stimulates the economy (Those with Liberal Minds will concur.)

-It denies total decadence in upper tier professions -they will make less as others make more. (Those with Middle Class sensibilities will concur.)

-It exercises a union between the vast majority of professions to see that same majority move AHEAD. (Voters have recently seen how much they "saved" when they broke ranks with the bottom half of professions. They "saved" on "welfare reform" and lost on energy prices, gas prices, Historic deficits (laid on them from Historic Surpluses), student loans, etc. Some have seen the light and only need to be reminded that we can not cleave from lower tier professions if we wish to gain on upper tier professions.)

-etc.
