For our local supporters: VOTE YES on the Proposed County Charter Amendment for "mandatory voter verified paper ballots; independent random audits of election results; audits required before certification." It is the last item on the ballot in Sarasota County.

Supreme Court passes on Sarasota voting machine balloting
The Florida Supreme Court refused to get involved Thursday in a dispute between the state and a citizens group over a ballot initiative that would require Sarasota County's election system to include a paper - not just electronic - record of votes. The justices voted 5-2 to issue a brief order declining to bump the case up from the 2nd District Court of Appeal... A three-judge District Court panel, at the suggestion of Secretary of State Sue Cobb, had asked the Supreme Court to assume jurisdiction because its "an issue of great public importance."...

 

...The Sarasota Alliance for Fair Elections, or SAFE, conducted a petition drive to get the issue on the ballot. The county initially challenged the proposal, but Circuit Judge Robert B. Bennett ruled it would be legal. The state is appealing his decision. The referendum will go ahead in the meantime. Voters will be asked to change the county's charter to require that voting machines leave a paper trail beginning with the 2008 election....
