Foley Resigns From Congress Over E-Mails
In a scandal guaranteed to anger parents, a prominent House Republican has resigned after the revelation that he exchanged raunchy electronic messages with a teenage boy, a former congressional page. Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., who is single, apologized Friday for letting down his family and constituents. Once his resignation letter was read to the House late Friday afternoon, Republicans spent the night trying to explain — six weeks before congressional elections — how this could have happened on their watch.Near midnight, they engineered a vote to let the House ethics committee decide whether an investigation is needed. Among the Republican explanations during the night:
_The congressional sponsor of the page, Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-La., said he was asked by the youth's parents not to pursue the matter, so he dropped it.
_Alexander said that before deciding to end his involvement, he passed on what he knew to the chairman of the House Republican campaign organization, Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-N.Y. Reynolds' spokesman, Carl Forti, said the campaign chairman also took no action in deference to the parents' wishes.
_Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., chairman of the Page Board that oversees the congressional work-study program for high schoolers, said he did investigate but Foley falsely assured him he was only mentoring the boy. Pages are high school students who attend classes under congressional supervision and work as messengers.
_The spokesman for Speaker Dennis Hastert, Ron Bonjean, said the top House Republican had not known about the allegations. Shimkus said he learned about them in late 2005.
Just as Shimkus' explanation was released, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California proposed to the House that its ethics committee investigate and make a preliminary report in 10 days. She demanded to know who knew of the messages, whether Foley had other contacts with pages and when the Republican leadership was notified of Foley's conduct. Instead, majority Republicans engineered a vote to allow the ethics panel to decide whether there should even be an investigation....

Resigning is not a punishment, and I fully expect some jurisdiction, preferably Federal, to indict, prosecute, and convict this slimeball.

If that's really the case, then the Republicans who covered it up are conspiritors to a crime. And while we're at, let's prosecute the parents as well for "being comfortable with" their child being verbally molested and stalked by a pedophile. That is parental neglect in the highest form.

Family values
Now, the party of family values is leaving it up to the family to handle crimes committed upon their children. This suggests to me that the GOP leadership thought that either the boy made it up or asked for it. Is this how we deal with pedophiles? John Shimkus told Foley to cease and desist any contact with the boy. Did Shimkus see that Foley actually did this? What about new young men who encountered Foley? Who protected them? What about Foley's prior actions? The party of corruption unveils itself. Underneath, we see that human decency and morality don't matter to them. It's all about maintaining power. Children can be stalked. People can be drowned and killed. More attention was paid to Terri Schiavo who had long ago stopped thinking or feeling and her right to life than to a teenager who was introduced to the depravity of pedophilia and quickly learned the fact that our government doesn't care about him or his rights. Welcome to Bush's America. It's not a healthy place to raise a family.

I think perhaps we've had it all wrong. Since the republican leadership covered up the whole affair that the immorality of those sick acts reveal what their "family values" actually are! How many times do the republicans have to say one thing while doing precisely the opposite before the general public will realize it? They've done it with the economy, immigration, the environment, efforts to stop terrorists... every time they say they are doing something good for these things their acts are exactly opposite. Bush said he wanted to be a uniter, not a divider, when he has been the more devisive than any president. Actions speak louder than words. And now this sex scandal, not just with male on male but adult on children! Short of immediate prosecution we'll have the ultimate hypocricy. All this reminds me of Rush Limbaugh, who said illegal drug users should be locked up and the key thrown away, then turns out to be a long time drug abuser himself. And yet he's still on the air! The right wing supports these "values". That is obvious. Democrats need to go on the offensive for a change. Enough is enough.

Now they are trying to make it all about the democrats and the timing. Of course there is NO reason to believe that the democrts had anything to do with ABC getting and printing the IMs and e-mails. Common logic tells me that if a dem had these in '03 and wanted to use them to influence an election [get dems elected to repug seats] they would have used them in '04! However that is NOT the story. Who cares who gave ABC the proof or why they did? Foley did what he did and that should be all there is to it! Investigate him and if he broke the law indict him. All the rest of it is smoke and mirrors.
One of the ones that made my mouth drop open, when they were trying out excuses was the one that went "if we had investigated or said anything about it we would have been accused of gay bashing"! These people really are "moroons"!
Now Mark Fordham has resigned from Reynolds office, claiming that he is the object of democratic hit-men. It seems that Fordham threatened and tryed to bribe ABC into not publishing the IMs and e-mials and offered to let them have the exclusive story after Foley resigned, in return. According to the repugs this is just another democrat hatchet job. We really are good, aren't we?;) hahahaha

There is another Republican House member who had an affair and was charged with trying to choke his girlfriend.
Rep. Don Sherwood R/Pennsylvania's 10th District TUNKHANNOCK, Pa.(AP) Sex could be the undoing of a family values Republican.
Four-term Rep. Don Sherwood recently had one of the safest seats in Congress as his conservatism played well in his heavily GOP, rural district in northeastern Pennsylvania. Democrats didn't even bother fielding a candidate in the last two elections.
Then last year Sherwood admitted to a five-year extramarital affair with a woman 35 years his junior. He settled a lawsuit claiming he had choked her.
I called and spoke to two staff members in his office. Very smug young men, they admitted that the case had been settled, but did the GOP shuffle on the case and what it was about.

Rev. Ted Haggard, President of the National Association of Evangelicals announced on television that he had 100 million evangelicals that were going to vote and take over the world. If he succeeds I guess sexual predators will be warmly accepted. They have not objected to Ken Mehlman being gay and running the GOP.

I find it strange that
I find it strange that Republicans always harp about the "letter" of the law, while ignoring the "spirit" of the law. Their top dog, Dubya, sets that standard with his "interpretation" of the Constitution and International Law.
When a 50-year old man preys on a high school student, of either sex, what in the hell does the "age of consent" have to do with anything? Most AOC laws place a limit on the age of the "other" partner, which is normally just a few years above the age of the "consentee."

Well, let me put my two cents into this debate. First, I agree that what Foley did was not right, since the person involved WAS a page. Whether it is illegel, thats a different question. HOWEVER, I think we are splitting hairs when it comes to calling it pedophilia. Yes, I see what Webster says, but we have 50 states, and each has its own age of consent. As a mature adult, common sense tells me that pedophilia is sex with a child. As a parent, I don't consider a 17 year old a child. Now, a 12 year old, yes. Further, in Washington DC, the age of consent is 16, as it is in 34 out of the 40 states. The remainder are either 17 or 18. To me this is a big uproar over nothing. A 17 year old knows whether or not he wants to engage in this sort of chat. He could have changed the subject or rejected at any time. But, no, he goes and gets a ruler and measures "IT". Politics as usual.!

A point of disagreement however: It is reasonable to use the dictionary definition as well as noting what I did above. I also would NOT remove the label "pedaphile" from somebody, if they simply failed to carry out the final act of SEX itself. A grown man, sexually desiring children makes him a pedophile, even if we AGAIN can all agree that thoughts can't be criminalized.
As to your belief that all 17 year olds are fit to navigate in an adult world (and especially an adult world involving intrigue and sex) is false. It is simply false. Or are we to open the gates and claim all 17 year olds are on their own?
