Kentucky's Third Congressional District

Kentucky's Third Congressional District is probably the most progressive in the state. It consists of the area of Louisville. Ann Northup is the Republican incumbent from this district.

The Democrat running for this seat is probably more aligned with the members of this site, including myself, than any of Kentucky's Democratic Congressional candidates. His name is John Yarmuth.

Here is a little about him, taken from his site:

John Yarmuth, Democratic candidate for U. S. Congress from Kentucky's 3rd District, brings a lifetime of involvement in public affairs to the campaign. John is the founder and executive editor of the Louisville Eccentric Observer, best known as LEO, a 15-year-old newsweekly serving the Louisville, Kentucky metropolitan area. A native of Louisville, Yarmuth is a 1965 graduate of Atherton High School, where he was student government president, and a 1969 graduate of Yale University, with a degree in American Studies. From 1971-75 he was a legislative aide to U. S. Senator Marlow Cook. Cook, a Republican, was the second member of Congress to call for Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974. In 1976, he founded Louisville Today magazine, which he published until 1982. During that time, Yarmuth also published City Paper, an alternative newspaper.

It goes on to list several accomplishments but I'll just take a few:

In 1985, John changed his Party registration to Democrat after realizing that the Republican Party no longer welcomed diverse opinions. John realized that his beliefs and opinions were more closely aligned with the Democratic Party, as they remain today.

In 1990, Yarmuth founded LEO Newsweekly, a free publication circulated widely in the Louisville area. LEO, which currently has a readership of approximately 150,000 each month, has won nearly 100 Metro Louisville Journalism Awards, of which Yarmuth has won 16 for editorial and column writing. LEO was sold in 2003, but Yarmuth continued writing his columns until entering the campaign for Congress.

Yarmuth is no stranger to political debate. In 2003, he and former WHAS radio talk show host John Ziegler debated the issues on a weekly basis on "Yarmuth & Ziegler" on WAVE 3 TV. From September 2004 until December 2005, John and conservative Jim Milliman faced off on the successor program, "Hot Button," hosted by Scott Reynolds.

Yarmuth is also the founder and president of the Center for Kentucky Progress, a progressive think tank on Kentucky issues.

In 2004, Yarmuth was named "Person of the Year" by the Louisville Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

On the issues as I said he more closely resembles the views of many members of this site. Here are his thoughts on a couple of very important issues. First Iraq:

The United States should immediately begin to remove its military footprints in Iraq. This means restricting all military personnel to defensive and training roles, and insuring that no American troops are in harm's way. The balance of troops should be withdrawn from Iraq, but some forces should remain in the region for deployment as needed.

Now a good domestic issue like Social Security:

I oppose privatizing Social Security. The privatization plan promoted by George Bush and Anne Northup would add almost $2 trillion to the national debt and it would do nothing to solve whatever cash flow problems that may or may not exist in the current system. There is no current need to adjust what has been one of the country's most successful social insurance programs.

The Third Congressional District in Kentucky has long been listed as vulnerable, but somehow Anne Northup manages to hold on to it. This time however, she is faced by a true Progressive Democrat who is well qualified as you can see. The buzz around the state is that this race is still close, and could be an upset. Please visit his site and see why I am excited about his campaign, and show your support for a Progressive Kentucky Democrat.

Rich, are you watching the dirty tricks already happening ...

in Tennessee? You might want to go over to DU...click on the state forums, scroll down to your state and click on that. You are in direct contact with folks all over your state who are already looking for nonsense.

Things are already happening in Ohio(duh), Tennessee, GA, and FL.

Update and Good News!!!

I had suspected that this race was very close and the Democrats had a real chance for a pick-up with this seat. Until today there was no real credible evidence of that but today national poll summaries issued by RT Strategies and Constituent Dynamics confirmed this. It shows that the race between John Yarmuth and Anne Northup is TIED at 48% a piece. I invite anyone who is looking for a great candidate who really espouses our views to support to visit John Yarmuth's site. He is running a great campaign as you can see from some of the ads above, and needs our help!!!!!!! Of all of Ky's Congressional candidates since Eric lost in the primaries, Yarmuth embodies the values of most of the grassroots Democrats on this site. Don't take my word for it, visit his site and look for yourself!!!!!

No matter what, get involved with some good Democratic candidates and help push them over the top!!!!!!!

Victory in 06!!!!!!

Good news from Kentucky's Third

Kentucky Democrats desperately would like to deliver at least two seats in this year's Congressional elections. At least two would balance the delegation from our state at 3-3.

With our Republican Senators, McConnell and Bunning, Democrat Ben Chandler is our lone sane voice in our Congressional delegation. The job he has done for his district is so good the he is one of the few Congressmen who are unopposed this year.

Now I knew former Congressman Ken Lucas would run a solid campaign in the fourth, and I liked the credentials of Mike Weaver in the second, but the one that is turning into a darkhorse is John Yarmuth, around Louisville in the third.

Reports have it that a new poll coming out this weekend will show that John Yarmuth has moved out to a four point. Another candidate in Jefferson county has done polling that shows him ahead 47-41 also.

http://www.bluegrassreport.org/bluegrass_politics/2006/10/source_bluegra...

Yarmuth has run a awesome campaign and more importantly seems to be peaking and achieving much needed momentum coming into the last week of the election. Visit his site and wish him the best!!!!!

http://www.yarmuthforcongress.com/

And a New Link

Check out the new site from the Yarmuth campaign:

www.northupexposure.com

It tells about all things Anne Northup!!!!

Yarmuth gains momentum

Going into the final week of the election, a new independent poll from Constituent Dynamics shows him leading 52-46!!!! More importantly this poll shows Yarmuth with a whopping 59-36 margin among independent voters following what hopefully is a national trend. The results of this whole poll are here:

http://constituentdynamics.com/mw/2006/pdf/round3/KY3_round3.pdf

And to ad extra credence to that poll, I found this in an AP article from Oct. 31:

After a decade of struggle, Democrats projected confidence with eight days of campaigning remaining, and increasingly, the battle for control of Congress was being waged on Republican turf. So much so that the House Democratic campaign committee arranged to begin television advertising against GOP Reps. Anne Northup in Kentucky and Jon Porter in Nevada, as well as for an open seat in western Nebraska that in recent years has been among the most safely Republican in the country.

I'm sure they are excited over their in Louisville as they have a truly Progressive candidate who has strong momentum going into the final week. Now, they have the D trip C kicking in some money too.

I hope everyone will stop in and check out the goings on at their website. This could be a pickup!!!

More momentum for Yarmuth

Yet another independent poll has come out showing John Yarmuth with a sizeable lead. More importantly, it shows him yet again above the 50% mark at 52-44!!!!!

Check out the whole poll at:

Help him push through the final week and pull this one out of the fire!!!
