Nancy Pelosi Is 'Very Serious' About Torture, Wiretaps, and Contempt

On Thursday, Newsweek's Howard Fineman broke huge news about Nancy Pelosi on Countdown:
the news based on talking to people around her and advisers to her just this afternoon after that story broke is that she is very serious about this.
The one part of it that Nancy Pelosi doesn‘t really want to mess with, I‘m told, is the evidence about the war in Iraq. Now, the whole question of the buildup for the war and whether lies were told about that and the reason for that is—she believes that she and other Democrats on the Hill knew that it was a phony deal, said so at the time, and she doesn‘t think there is any percentage of going over that particularly.
But yes on torture, yes on possibly the eavesdropping things, yes on Guantanamo, and certainly, especially yes on the question of coming before the Congress to testify. She is really determined on that point and seems very eager to try to haul Karl Rove and others into court for contempt.
Of course we all want to prosecute everyone in the Bush Administration who lied about Iraq, so we will not stop pushing for it. But it's huge news that Pelosi is "very serious" about investigating torture, wiretaps, Gitmo, and contempt of Congress.
Update 1: In the Countdown segment that followed, Jonathan Turley rightly warned against a whitewash instead of an investigation that would lead to criminal prosecution:
I would love to see this type of aggressive role of Congress in dealing with this. But I am very concerned about this idea of compromises and negotiations. Many of these things become sort of Capitol Hill kabuki of approved questions and answers. That‘s not what we want. And we certainly do not need another commission like the 9/11 Commission.

That she's serious about courts handling it is nice, but also sort of like a judge being serious about Congress handling it.

show that she is much more interested in cashing her defense profiteer husband's paychecks than she is about doing what her job actually requires her to do. Pelosi needs to go.

I haven’t forgotten about Bushy regime, and I haven’t forgotten about his last 2 years. When Pelosi tabled a bill to impeach Bushy, I also know she is saying that she is a Democrat. I also haven’t forgotten about all the Democrats that was against the Iraq war and voted to fund the war, because they had added “Pork” for their farmers and then got on TV to brag about it, and failed to tell the family that because of the “Pork” their Son or Daughter gave their live. I’m old and maybe I remember too many things that were because of greed and corruption. This corruption game that both Parties are playing is an on going game! The Taxpayers are footing the bill for all this when people should be getting this for our infrastructures, healthcare, schools and etc. We have become a Country, which has lost it ability to govern! Obama was a very good start in cleaning up our Capital, but As long as Reid and Pelosi are in charge, they will continue to be a stumbling block.

Today the USA is on fire and is burning at a very fast rate from Political corruption and greed, just like Rome, as the Democrats have had both houses for over two years they still didn’t have the guts to clean-up their mess and still with all three branches of our Government they do not want to change this corruption and greed that has crippled our national with a economic crisis that will be the worst in world history; a country for people and by people is “not” how our Government is being managed today. I feel that both parties can equally be to blame for corruption. They still do not want to have justice for crimes of their members of their houses or they do not want to be investigated, they have managed to hog tie our Laws and Justice Department to a point of being unfair.
Very soon Obama will have too get Justice Working on crimes in our Government, kicking the can on corruption isn’t the answer for our bad economy!

I agree with you Ole Geezer. Our so called leadership, Nancy Pelosi and others are not working for people's best interest. These leaders seem to have a totally different agenda than what I want and need. I remain hopeful that our new President will not only listen to people, he'll also HEAR what we're saying.
