Moveon PollMany of us have supported Moveon with our time and money for years. So we were shocked when Moveon conducted a dishonest "poll" on the $93 billion Iraq War Supplemental that left out Barbara Lee's Amendment. Without that choice, Moveon dishonestly claimed 85% of its members supported Pelosi's version of the Supplemental, which will fund Bush's war well into 2008. Pelosi used Moveon's "poll" to persuade wavering "progressives" that Moveon and much of the anti-war movement was on her side. This dishonesty also appeared in key news articles and had a huge negative impact on wavering "progressives" according to Rep. Maxine Waters, who joined peace activists for a conference call. Moveon has refused to justify its dishonesty to its deeply disappointed members, and we are hearing from many activists who want more accountability from Moveon. What do you think? (Vote for as many choices as you like.) Moveon should truthfully explain why it undermined the Barbara Lee Amendment for a fully-funded withdrawal from Iraq. 92% (135 votes) Moveon should fully support bills to end the Iraq War in 2007 that are enforceable. 80% (118 votes) Moveon should fully support the impeachment of Bush and Cheney for Iraq, torture, warantless wiretapping, and other high crimes. 84% (124 votes) Moveon should be more responsive to the priorities of its members, rather than Democratic Party leaders. 89% (131 votes) I would support another grassroots organization if Moveon does not become more responsive to its members. 79% (116 votes) I fully support Moveon just as they are and do not want progressive groups to criticize them. 4% (6 votes) Total votes: 147

My Rep.'s Chief of Staff: MoveOn's Dummy poll was death knell
I could just about kill MoveOn - not literally, but I can tell you I quit MoveOn and will not contribute another dime unless they re-do their duplicitous poll by TOMORROW MORNING (3/23) at about 10:00 am. My Rep's chief of staff called me today to prepare me for the fact that the vote on the Iraq Supplemental would not be what we have all been lobbying for for the last 3 months. What he said was that the MoveOn poll was the tipping point for many Dems, that they didn't feel backed up by the "netroots progressives".
What do YOU want to do about MoveOn?
Pissed at MoveOn
I emailed MoveOn to inform them of my irritation and disappointment
regarding their misleading poll. I stated that they owed their
members an explanation, and if none were forthcoming that
I would no longer respond to/participate in/contribute to any
further MoveOn activities. I doubt if they will respond. They're
probably wondering, 'WTF!'
I think MoveOn may have gotten a bit complacent, assuming
that they are the progressive Dem grassroots organization,
and that they know what's best for us.
move on
Iam soooo pissed off at move on that I sent them an e-mail canseling my membership.I never thought i would see the day that move on would support killing more americans but thats what they have done.If this is how democrats are going to act Iam staying home in the next election.
not one more cent
I gave generously to moveon before. never again!
MoveOn.org Poll
I knew that it was a terrible mistake for the Democratic Party to recruit Republicans to run as Democrats in order to regain the majority in Congress. Now, exactly what I predicted has come to pass. We have 77 "Blue Dog Democrats" who are acting exactly the way the Reagan Democrats did after he was elected President. If you will remember, those so-called Democrats supported nearly every bill introduced by the Reagan administration and completely sold us down the river.
Instead of catering to the Blue Dogs, as Nancy Pelosi has been doing, by running that insidious and fraudulent poll, MoveOn should have polled its members to ask them whether or not Nancy Pelosi should continue to attempt to placate the Blue Dogs by watering down every bill the Democrats have introduced since regaining the majority.
We now have 77 Blue Dog Democrats virtually dictating what the party will do! Just one small for instance, the new minimum wage was supposed to be set at $7.50 and instead, just like everything else this Congress has done, it was watered down and passed as $7.25. This may seem minor to most people but I can guarantee you that this $0.25 per hour was going to be a precious addition to the incomes of single moms and nearly everyone who has to work for slave wages in the United States!!!
What MoveOn should be doing is putting pressure on the Blue Dog Democrats to back down and support the Democratic Party with the Loyalty it deserves for putting them in office in the first place. If they won't stop their divisive actions, then MoveOn should threaten to recruit candidates who will work with the party to run against them in 2008.
A majority is not worth this. I would much rather have an enemy that I know in Congress than this bunch that I know I can not trust!
MoveOn.org manipulation on Supplemtal votes
I have contacted MoveOn.org to express my outrage with their manipulation of the vote on Supplemental funding, and have removed myself from their e-mail list. I will no longer support MoveOn.org in their campaigns, and moved on to other progressive sites. This is the second time MoveOn.org has disappointed, and for me it will be the last!!
MoveOn.org
I agree and I did the same several days ago when the "vote" was presented by MoveOn. I have "moved on" to sites like this one, PDA, and ImpeachPAC.org. Pelosi has shown her true self and she is just "one of the good ole' boys!" What a disappointment! Thanks for speaking out - we must continue to fight the right, even in our own party.
Cynthia Ann Hartsfield (Pilzner)
Biased poll
I will be very hesitant to take part in any further Moveon polls as the last one on the bill to finance the war was very deceptively done. Not at all mentioning the Boxer bill. Are you really for the Republicans?
polls
I'm responding not to this specific letter, but to the general tenor of these posts. They must bring such joy to the right to see all the hysterical namecalling tearing apart a movement. I didn't follow the MoveOn poll, but I must say I'm not too happy about the choices in this Democrats.com poll. : For example, "I support MoveOn just as it is, and would not like anyone to criticize it". Well, how about those who see grounds for serious criticism of tactics or judgment, but would prefer to work within to change it, rather than splinter into yet another bunch of groups--- There's no such response on your poll. And asking whether people think "MoveOn should truthfully explain why it undermined...." It's a little like "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?" If you want an explanation, ask for it; if you want a defensive response, use language like that. As a divided people we face huge challenges in learning to talk to people who don't agree with us, so it's really distressing to see everyone equating MoveOn with the "evildoers".
Not evildoers, just
Not evildoers, just sellouts. MoveOn is all about MoveOn and Eli, and has become more concerned with money than Progressive ideals. MoveOn is becoming a DLC enabler...
MoveOn is part of the solution, not part of the problem
Let's use our strength to fight our enemies, not our allies. MoveOn is an ally, and a good one.
Keep your eyes on the prize.
MoveOn used to be an ally,
MoveOn used to be an ally, of sorts. They appear to have been infiltrated by the "centrist" neocon-enablers of the DLC.
When Eli accepts responsibility for his errors, and issues an apology to his members for such a watered-down and misleading poll, we Liberal Democrats will reconsider his usefulness as a ally.
We been date-raped
The people we relied upon have let us down. The people we helped elect prefer to listen to war contractors, foreign governments, and Republicans instead of us. Who will be the first to say, "If I had known back in March 2007 what I know now, I would not have voted for the supplemental appropriation."
false poll
I was tricked into voting "Yes" by the poll, thinking I was just checking out the options - until the screen popped up and thanked me for voting. I can't imagine there weren't MANY others where the same thing happened for them. I emailed MOVE-ON to tell them my vote was inaccurately counted, but haven't heard anything personally or publicly.
Move On's false poll is very similar to those put out by...
Faux News and Newsmax and Drudge. When a poll leaves off important questions(the Lee resolution)they cheat all of us. We have had 6+ years of false polls...has Move On joined with the DLC?

MoveOn sells us down the river
When I got MoveOn's email I was confused enough NOT to vote and fortunately DIDN'T vote till I got CodePink's email exposing MoveOn's for what it was. I copied CodePink's email into a message to MoveOn. But that's not enough to let them know how badly they betrayed us. I'm getting off MoveOn's list altogether.
Move-On's duplicity
I have notified MoveOn.org to kindly remove my name from their mailing list because of this. M. Shafer
I did the same but...
...I wasn't nice about it.
MoveOn has dropped the ball big time--sold out and gone totally "Pelosi" ...It's true--Power corrupts!
But let’s keep our eyes on the goal.
I didn’t vote in their poll because I didn’t like the choices and think Move-on should be told about the shortcoming of their poll. That said I don’t think this should be made into what looks a lot like a power/financial struggle between progressive groups.
As for the issue addressed (or not addressed) in the poll: before the invasion of Iraq it was clear that the best our government could do was not invade. Unfortunately, the Bush administration didn't do what was best for the country. Now it is less clear what its best. What is clear is that it would be best if the Bush administration were removed from power as soon as possible. For this reason I think the focus should be on impeachment and consolidating the majority in the House and Senate. Trying to set time limits will probably not be effective and only gives the Republicans an excuse for why things are going from very bad to much worse.
To put it another way: First I don’t think it will be possible for Congress to enact a time schedule for withdrawal from Iraq. Second, if it were possible, I’m not convinced it would save either American or Iraqi lives. And, in the long run, when things in Iraq and the Middle East get worse – as I think is inevitable – this "meddling from Congress" will only give the Administration something to blame their failure on.
What are we doing?
What the F? At this rate, the right wing will be back in charge by next election. Can we not, as progressives, liberals, or whatever the hell you want to identify as, have consensus? It is really screwed IF MoveOn did collude to put out disinformation to its own constituents. Damn, we do not need to be imploding like this. The Republicans would love nothing more than to see us unravel from within.
Then I see the following post, and my heart dropped to my feet. The following must have been written by an infiltrator from the right, because no democrat or progressive I know would use this language. The syntax alone left me with a headache. This kind of verbiage disturbs me deeply.
"Radical Ultra Left Democrats"
Submitted by fiddlestix on March 21, 2007 - 11:45pm.
"Its about time more sane democrats take control of our party from the radicals I read about in these pages. The Dennis Kucinich, Cindy Sheehan, Maxine Waters, Barbara Boxer, John Murtha are only encouraging the terrorists in Iraq. I want our troops out also.
The democratic tax hike. The economy is booming, tax income is highest it ever was, new investment is at an all time high, and unemployment is at an all time low. WHY DO YOU RADICALS WANT TOO RAISE TAXES ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE?? Are you insane. DO you want to return to 7-8% unemployment and higher. Do you want to stifle growth in the economy. I remember the Carter years when mortgage rates were 16-17%. Get real or get out. You're going to cost the party all the gains achieved in 2006."
I don't know where this Fiddlestix is getting information, but it sounds more like Faux News than anything else. We don't have Bush Democrats. That is an oxymoron that my brain will not acknowledge.
Good luck to us, we'll need it. The future is going to be tough and I don't think soft America has the hide for what is coming. I know I wouldn't survive if the right has its way of domination. So let's not let them back in power. However, with leaders like Pelosi (I had so much hope for her) we seem to already have a bad leadership precedent being set.
Its as if the right has dirt on the democratic leadership, and threaten to use it against them everytime they start standing up to the bullies. Did anyone imagine last November 7 that by March 23 we would have this kind of bullcrap going on in Congress already. We want them to end the war, period >.<
When Bush finally leaves office, we will have had Bush's and Clinton's running this country for nearly a quarter century. No more Bush's, no more Clintons, but there is one legitimate leader who should rightfully be president, and that is Al Gore.
Enough!
I am sick and tired of all the bullshit.
Impeach and convict. Anything less is just political masturbation.
Impeach, impeach, impeach
Agreed! Impeach Bush and Cheney's usurping, lying, murdering, thieving, smug asses now! I could strangle Pelosi with my bare hands! How dare that freaking b**ch sell us all out like this? She is nailing the final nails in America's coffin. And how dare Moveon play into her hands? I could scream that I didn't read the vote more carefully. I feel soiled by their manipulation. Maybe it's time to rework our entire government. This system seems irreparably broken.
Impeach,Impeach,Impeach
I am definitely in favor of impeaching both Bush and Cheney. However, it would be easier to impeach Cheney first. Bush does still enjoy A modicom of popularity still. Besides, impeaching Cheney cuts the head off the beast. Bush has never been in charge.
They have succeeded in
They have succeeded in bringing about infighting between two very strong groups to the detriment of both. Sounds like "Divide and Conquer" to me. We need to settle our differences now and move on to more important matters - impeachment, end the war, repeal the patriot act, etc.
Where can I contact MoveOn......
to stop my monthly donation they take from my credit card, until they do answer questions from their members?
Anybody know?

I was so angry about the poll yesterday that when I received the next MoveOn email, I zipped right to the bottom of it and hit the "unsubscribe" link. It loaded a web page confirming my action, and asking for feedback (why leaving?), and I let 'em have it.
When *any* organization starts acting like FAUX News, I am G - O - N - E.
Move ON!
Moveon Must Move on - or we should drop all support! Thay are as wimpy as most Democrats! We must stand up and take to the streets to wake them and the rest of Congress! Jerry
Shame on them!
I have been critical of MoveOn's support of Nancy Pelosi from Day One, and have told them so. I have grown more and more disenchanted with the organization as the months have passed since the election. It's clear to anyone who pays attention that Pelosi's goal is to appease those in power, NOT end the war or make meaningful changes. That makes MoveOn's continued support of her actions inexcusable. This latest fiasco is just another step on the downward spiral.
My letter to MoveOn
This was sent to Eli Pariser and Nita Chaudhary. The address for Nita bounced, Eli is eli.pariser@moveon.org and you then have to fill out something to get past his spam filter.
Eli and Nita,
Goddamn it, you people are sabotaging the antiwar movement!
We are opposed to this Democratic Party sellout, and I question now your independence from the Democratic Party. You rigged the poll to get the results you wanted, supporting Pelosi, by giving no choice of only voting money to safely remove troops within 6 months (the Barbara Lee amendment). And now you send us this when many of us occupied Markey's office on Feb. 20 and 21 to get him to pledge to vote NO on the supplemental $100 billion for Iraq. Whatever good name MoveOn had in the past is now mud. Many like me will never give another dime to MoveOn.
Veterans For Peace, Military Families Speak Out, United For Justice with Peace, and other Boston area antiwar organizations are opposed to the so-called "Iraq Accountablility Act" which keeps the war going until Fall '08 so that Nancy Pelosi can try to get more Democrats elected to Congress.
MoveOn, which started as a good grassroots organization, should be ashamed of itself. Plus you make it next to impossible to contact anybody in authority at MoveOn. You will be left behind in the dustbin of history as we fight on to defund the war and end the carnage and you try to get more Democrats elected to Congress.
I am angry. And I am not the only one.
Nate Goldshlag
Co-Coordinator, Smedley D. Butler Brigade of Veterans For Peace
I forgot to mention that
I forgot to mention that this letter was in response to their standard appeal to me to ask Rep. Ed Markey (my rep) to vote for the "Iraq Accountability Act".
Camp Pelosi
It looks like Code Pink stuck to their guns. According to the News Update from 'Citizens for Legitimate Government' they were doing what all of us should be doing. "Police tell anti-war protesters to take down 'Camp Pelosi' 22 Mar 2007 Anti-war protesters in their 11th day of a round-the-clock vigil in front of Rep. Nancy Pelosi's Pacific Heights home were ordered by San Francisco police Thursday night to remove protest signs, banners and canopies that adorned what they called Camp Pelosi." "Anti-war protesters arrested at Pelosi's office 22 Mar 2007 Four members of the anti-war group Code Pink were arrested outside the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) Thursday afternoon, following an announcement that they would seek to take over the office."
Women have always known we cannot live on lies forever.
I'm still looking for a way to be involved in making a difference in the world that isn't abusive of me. I voted NO in MoveOn's pole, but I also thought it was designed by a pr/marketing firm; not designed to enlighten the membership or to inform the organization on the will of its members. The reason for this is now all too apparent, Pelosi whipped MoveOn into line. I complained at Gotham City Council(Shoshannah) but the damage has been done and I feel misused, homeless again in a political sense. The Supplemental is useless and unenforceable. It abuses the language as badly as the German and American fascists ever did: "This will ensure that we're out by ...." actually means that "this will buy our presence at least until." (By then the regular appropriation ($650B? perhaps symbolically reduced by 0.75B to placate the peace fruit fringe)will have passed muster as a compromise measure. How long before even the rhetoric about representing the voters will to redress Constitutional abuses and end our conducting genocide in the middle east is twisted and co opted by those who have or those who want power? MoveOn deserves a spanking. I feel so disappointed, angry, distorted despite my objections into a shape that serves their interests, that misrepresents my interests. I am sick of the misuse of language too. Is there anyone who interprets our/my November vote as not meaning "get out of Iraq," and stay out of Iran, etc.? If there is, their wishful thinking is seriously distorting their view of reality. Yeah, we want change. We want our country back from the oil interests and war-toy interests and corporate interests, the plunderers of our power and treasure and truth. Women have always known we cannot live on lies forever.
Move On's betrayal
Betrayal (or other synonym) is the only word to describe Move On's actions in their deceitful, dishonest "poll". They lost my support; I unsubscribed, told them why and will not donate another dime. This is a grassroots organization dependent on its members to survive. The best message we can send is to cancel membership, refuse to participate or donate until they come clean in a big, public way & let the policians and the public know the huge mistake they made.
I QUIT!
After today I not only quit MoveOn but the Democratic Party...I'm fed up, done, sayonara! I'll probably go Green or just be an Independent. The Democrats have betrayed my trust that they would stop the war and make sweeping change...instead it's "politics as usual"! Well not from this ol' radical geezer. Not one more bit of support. Basta! Viva la Revolucion!
Yeah Papa, become a Greenie, ya know, the party that...
gave us Bush in 2000. Good choice. The party that wanted to run a candidate in the last election in PA--against the Dem. Had the Greens succeeded getting their candidate on the ballot, Rick Santomonious would still be in office.

I said I quit the Dumbocratic Party and won't work for them...I didn't say I wouldn't vote for the best candidate... If Al Gore runs...he'll get my vote. I'll never vote to let another Repub win. Is that more clear?

We must all hang together...
We Democrats have a history of putting ideological purity above getting things done. Bringing out the long knives against MoveOn isn't helping anyone - it's just fostering bad feelings among people that essentially think alike that need to work together.
Yes, we need to bring our service members home. As soon as possible. At the same time, we all know that an immediate withdrawal isn't going to happen. Skewering the people that are working for compromise doesn't move your agenda forward, it just makes all Democrats look bad. Impeachment, as delicious as it sounds, isn't going to happen. You're not going to get the votes you need for conviction in the Senate. Get real.
Let's try moving a little in the right direction and building momentum instead of taking shots at those making what progress is possible.
Jeff, I agree with much of what you have said.
We do need to unite behind common goals that will work.
At the present time, the bill that passed the House yesterday
( and it barely passed) was what worked. I know
many hoped for a more immediate withdrawal, but that would
have been defeated.
I disagree with you on a point, however.
We need to begin Senate hearings on George W., Cheney, Rove and Co,
now . The findings of those hearings will lead to impeachment
of GW and Cheney.
And last but not least, we need to unite behind these goals.
Division among us helps the Repugs and strengthens their agenda.
United we stand-Divided we fall.
Karin, using the "united we
Karin, using the "united we stand" axiom sounds like a good policy, until you look a little deeper. That is exactly the premise that the neocon-enabling "centrist" members of the DLC use, in order to promote their Republican-Lite trash.
Now, it appears that the DLC and their parent PPI "Third Way" movement have spread their tentacles into MoveOn and other Progressive "centrist" organizations. The DLC is the cause of the division in the Democratic Party, and their version of "unification" is the same as the neocons': promotion of corporate fascism, and an imperialist Pax Americana.
Middle Americans from both ends of the political spectrum need to become united in a stand against neoconservatives, and faux neoliberals. They are our common enemy.
You're right, Bill.
I certainly hope they haven't claimed to that phrase as their own.
It isn't, it belongs to the people.
The DLC has only promoted their agenda, not what true Democrats
want.
You are among those
You are among those who confuse "impeachment" with removal from office. They are two entirely different processes, with different consequences.
Whether or not a trial by the Senate convicts those who have been impeached is almost irrelevant at this point. The investigations, and the bringing of specific charges through the impeachment process, are all that is really necessary in order to uncover the gross abuse of power by this criminal administration. Impeachment also prevents the current, or subsequent, president from issuing pardons for those charged by the impeachment process: http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/pardons1.htm
Impeachment is an indictment by the House, and a means of documenting the evidence and bringing charges against any civil officer of the U.S. government: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_in_the_United_States
This Congress, after six years of shirking its Constitutional obligation to oversee and rein-in the Executive Branch, owes the American People nothing less than the impeachment of those who have violated their trust.
Impeachment has absolutely nothing to do with "ideological purity." It has everything to do with what is right, and with protecting the Constitution of the United States of America. Keep in mind that Dubya does not need to be the primary target of impeachment. The American public, and many in the House and the Senate, would support the impeachment of Rove, Cheney, Gonzales, and Rice. Shine the light of truth on Dubya's "brains" -- the real architects of this neocon affront to the Constitution -- and doable impeachment will have served its purpose.
Moveon Sold its Soul & intergrity, therefore, cannot lead.
My choice is not to honor or trust or respect Moveon anymore. They ----ed up in a big way. They can no longer be trusted to speak for the grass roots in America. Especially, people of color should examine whatever Moveon says and does with two jaundiced eyes.
