McCain Is Clueless About Spain

Josh Marshall is all over this one. McCain has no idea who the President of Spain is (Zapatero), or which continent it's on (Europe). Listen for yourself, starting at 2:58.

Sadly, Condi won't be around to tutor McCain if he steals Bush's third term in the White House. But I'm sure Sarah Palin knows how to hum "The Rain in Spain," which makes her an expert!

Q: Finally let's talk about Spain. If you are elected President, would you be willing to invite President Jose Luiz Rodriguez Zapatero to the White House to meet with you?

McCain: I would be willing to meet with those leaders who [are] our friends and want to work with us in a cooperative fashion. And btw President Calderon of Mexico is fighting a very very tough fight against the drug cartels. I'm glad we are now working in cooperation with the Mexican government on the Merida plan and I intend to move forward with relations and invite as many of those leaders as I can to the White House.

Q. Would that invitation be extended to the Zapatero government, to the President himself?

McCain: Honestly I have to look at the relations and the situations and the priorities. But I can assure you, I will establish closer relations with our friends and I will stand up to those who want to do harm to the U.S.A. I know how to do both.

Q: So you have to wait and see if he's willing to meet with you, would you be willing to do it, in the White House?

McCain: Again, all I can tell you is that I have a clear record of working with leaders in the Hemisphere that are friends with us and standing up to those who are not. And that's judged on the basis of the importance of our relationship with Latin America and the entire region."

Q: But what about Europe. I'm talking about the President of Spain.

McCain: What about me, what?

Q: Are you willing to meet with him if you're elected president?

McCain: I am wiling to meet with any leader who is dedicated to the same principles and philosophy that we are for humans rights, democracy and freedom. And I will stand up to those who do not.

Update 1: I agree with Jonathan Stein:

Honestly? I think he didn't hear the interviewer, who was talking quickly and with an accent, when she transitioned to Spain. And after he missed the transition he got confused and either misheard or misunderstood the rest of what was going on.

I think this whole thing is a symptom of McCain's age.

Update 2: McCain's chief neocon Randy Scheunemann insists that McCain wasn't confused, knew exactly who Zapatero was and meant every word of what he said.

Really? Then why did McCain make repeated references to Latin America if he knew he was talking about Spain? Does his addled brain think Spain is in Latin America?

Well, lately McCain says if

Well, lately McCain says if he were President he would fire the head of the SEC! Does he have that power? Isn't it an independent agency?

Apparently he could "fire"

Apparently he could "fire" the SEC Chairman...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEC

but the replacement would be subject to the "advice and consent" of the Senate.

McCain's grasp of the SEC's structure, however, is no better than his grasp of world affairs, or geography. The SEC is a non-partisan Independent Agency made up of five commissioners, only one of which is "Chairman," who does not have the authority to make unilateral decisions.

The SEC does NOT make monetary policy (that is a function of the Fed and the Secretary of the Treasury) but is a regulatory and enforcement agency designed to protect investors.

Update: Then again, apparently not:

http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/9/18/163951/981

But while the president nominates and the Senate confirms the SEC chair, a commissioner of an independent regulatory commission cannot be removed by the president.

From time to time, presidents have attempted to remove commissioners who have proven "uncooperative." However, the courts have general upheld the independence of commissioners. In 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt fired a member of the Federal Trade Commission and the Supreme Court ruled the president acted unconstitutionally.

Thanks, Bill. McCain sure

Thanks, Bill. McCain sure does trap himself in uncharted waters.

I don't think his problems are strictly age related. My mom is 79 years old and she is far more clear thinking than McCain. I think he has something else going on related to his POW years, PLUS things that are age related. Just watching him speak makes me uncomfortable for him. He can't rotate his body very well or move his arms (POW related).

I sure can't picture him as our President.

McCain is a nightmare

Just try to imagine for a moment what it would be like if McCain were elected president. No matter what his excuses or who delivers them our nation is at great peril if they put this doddering old fool in charge of anything! The interviewer made it very clear that he was asking about Spain's Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Let's say McCain just went blank after a long hard day, would he then be up to running the most powerful country on the planet? Imagine what kind of stress he will get from Putin and his surrogate/protegé, now president of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev is known as a quick legal mind and an expert on economics. Up against McCain and Palin, well we know of the legendary Mccain temper that can flare out of control with out notice.

This is very serious business remember who has the red button and the football with him at all times. McCain might not be able to raise his arms very high, but you can bet he can push the button on the football. I seriously believe that McCain is a danger to the nation and needs to retire to a nice safe room in one of their many homes, not in the peoples White House.
