We support President Obama, but we cannot support the escalation of George Bush's war in Afghanistan. Congress, not the President, decides how our tax dollars are spent.

After 8 years, nearly 5,300 U.S. lives, and $3 trillion, it's time to bring our troops safely home from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Tell Congress to vote against any funds for these wars, except to bring our troops safely home.

We have urgent priorities here at home, especially jobs, healthcare, education, and global warming. We must also reduce taxes for working families and our $12 trillion national debt.

Washington isn't listening to the American people. We must change Washington by electing a new generation of candidates on a simple platform: Jobs Not Wars.

Help us get started with small contributions to three great candidates:
http://www.actblue.com/page/democratscom

Thanks to your generosity, we've already raised over $22,000 for three outstanding Jobs Not Wars candidates:

* CA36 (Los Angeles): Marcy Winograd is re-challenging BlueDog Jane Harman. Marcy is a dynamic leader of the peace and justice movement. In 2006, Marcy got 38% on a shoestring. This time, she already has great TV ads.

* GA12 (Savannah/Augusta): Regina Thomas is re-challenging BlueDog John Barrow. Barrow won in 2008 by promising to support Barack Obama, who made powerful radio ads for Barrow. But Barrow betrayed Obama in Congress and Georgia voters are flocking to Regina's campaign.

* NY-Senate: When Hillary Clinton left the Senate, Gov. Paterson chose little-known Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, a centrist from upstate NY, to replace her. Jonathan Tasini is a brilliant leader who has devoted his life to progressive causes and would truly change the Senate.

Please support Marcy, Regina, and Jonathan here:

On Tuesday, Massachusetts voters have a fantastic opportunity to elect a Jobs Not Wars candidate to replace Senator Ted Kennedy. His name is Mike Capuano, and he has a perfect voting record against funding Bush's wars. His powerful TV commercial  against the escalation in Afghanistan gives him a real shot at winning. Progressive Democrats of America  is running a virtual phonebank to call Massachusetts voters. Please volunteer  if you can.

We'd also like to support primary challengers against every BlueDog in the House and Senate. If you can recommend a good candidate to beat a BlueDog, please tell us now by posting a comment. Time is running short!

Thanks for all you do!

Excuse me, but it is not GWB that is in office.

It is Obama that is escalating the war in Afghanistan to protect the poppy fields. Obama has already this year sent 40,000 troops and is now adding another 30,000. Why do you try to pass the buck on this escalation by Obama on Bush?

Let's get real or we all will lose! GWB did not send these troops, let's put the escalation where it belongs, with Obama and his cohorts.

Stop mincing words. This is one of the reasons why we go no where, but down a fascist-socialist road.

Jaime-Alvaro: Burbano

Had GWB performed his job Properly

For ( Halifax)--Had GWB performed his job properly and sent enough troops to Afganistan right after 911, Obama would not have to send troops now. Or had we closed in on Osama Ben Laden when we had him and his men trapped, but no, we backed off. We backed off because if we had killed Osama at that time Americans would have said OK we've evened the score. That would have made it harder for him to trick America into going after Saddam. Remember the night before we started the bombing of Baghdad, Saddam said about Bush's aligations of WMD's " America will be surprised at what they find when they attack", we were all dupped by GWB and his media. But we all know Bush jr. was only about showing his daddy that he could run the country better than him. He was determined to go after Saddam, and finish daddy's war. Because of this we could not send enough troops to Afganistan. Stop defending GWB. History will place blame for both wars where it belongs. Except in Texas where history books are controlled by the republicans. Wayne Blackshire TN

I think that President Obama has outlined a plan in Afghanistan that will have a good chance of success. Leaving Afghanistan in its current condition will simply embolden the Taliban and Al Qaeda to overrun the country and use it to recruit terrorists to carry out attacks here on U.S. soil. There have already been foiled attempts to attack us again, even though they have been chased into the tribal areas of Pakistan. We have to work in close coordination with the Pakistani army to stamp out this group before it takes off like wildfire. We knew that Obama had planned to escalate Afghanistan while drawing down Iraq. He CAMPAIGNED on it! If we don't get results in a year to 18 months, then we should throw in the towel and beef up our domestic security. For nearly 8 years, the last administration was "dithering" on Afghanistan, so let Obama have a crack at it! I'm with Ed Schultz on this one.

Democrats.com has it wrong.

Obama campaigned on this, and now he's fulfilling that promise.
And you want to throw him under the bus for it.

This is about not letting the area completely destabilize, which is precisely what it WILL do if we don't let the *admittedly corrupt* Karzai government get on its feet before we leave.

Afghanistan goes back to what it was before we spent 8 years, thousands of lives, and billions in treasure: a festering cancer in the region, and host to the same organization that attacked us on 911.

Pakistan, Indias rival and a nuclear power, goes back to appeasing its internal extremists, who are closely allied with AQ and Taliban. Or falls to them.

India, the worlds most populous democracy and a nuclear power, becomes increasingly jumpy about its antagonistic neighbors. Or attacks them. Or is attacked by them. Remember the Mumbai attack last year? Look up Lashkur E Toiba. Pakistani.

The only way to not fuck this up is what Obama has chosen to do: surge to wipe out opposition and get the Afghans trained, while helping Pakistan with their problem as we have been, then get the hell out.

There is no other option. Our fist is in the tar baby already.

As for the money spent *that money doesn't evaporate*: it goes to contractors, soldiers and their families, manufacturers. Just like with the stimulus package, wealth spent is wealth generated. Instead of worrying about it, consider it a shadow-stimulus.

Why? He has done nothing for people that voted him in. He has mortgaged our children in the name of Wall Street profits. He is continuing the Bush/Cheney policies in fighting against open government. And now he has adopted a war we can not win and can not afford. Obama has proven to be the single biggest disappointment of in my 40 years of voting; who would have ever guessed Obama == Bush.lite

This attack on America is about freedom and human rights..... about integrity and sacrifice . About the individuals who planned and attacked the United States over mystical religious concepts praising their God over the horrific death of individuals from 80 or so Nations working and doing business as usual in New York on 911 .

So, the objective has not changed . eliminate the religious fanatic who attacked us. I have family in the arm services and I feel I have a strong right to voice my opinion over this matter @ hand ... If we are to wage war it better count for something and not go into the pages of history seen as ' just another politicians failed war .'

Where have you....

been for the past 8 plus years. GWB and his incompetant neocons, weren't interested in elimating the fanatic responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Their mission was already planned, even before those attacks were made.
Iraq, and its rogue leader, was the real prize they sought. With the dismantling of the Iraqi government, the plan was to take charge of the country's oil revenues.
On several occassions, the fanatic you speak of, coulkd possibly have been captured, or killed. But, GWB's game plan didn't include the fanatic.
Plus, it is public knowledge that the Bush family and the bin Laden family were pretty good friends. Maybe that's why GWB allowed the bin Laden family members and friends to fly out of the United States after all air traffic was stopped by the White House. ???
After GWB decided that Iraq's oil was more important than the fanatic who took the lives of appx 3000 American lives, the Afgan mission became muted.
It looks to me like a wake-up call is needed here. It's the 8th of December 2009. We're now in the process of not building the Afgan nation, [ the United States does not build nations, per President Barrack Obama.] The main effort is to drive out, or kill, the 100 al Qadea militants that holds a death grip on the Afgan nation. [ according to our military leadership].

Peace is the answer. That's why Obama wants to end the war.

It is extremely difficult to imagine how it must be to make tough decisions as the president of such a divided country.

I have been a peace activist for many years. I marched against the first Gulf War before I was really even old enough to be aware of what it was all about. I have attended many vigils and honk for peace at the guys on the corner who go out every Saturday rain or shine to end the war in Iraq. I would have protested the Vietnam War if I had been born yet.

I however support Mr. Obama in his recent decision to send more troops to Afghanistan. He is doing what must be done to put an end to what was started by radical extremists that attacked our country eight years ago. Does anyone really think that if he had decided not to send the troops, he would be better received by the masses?

I force myself to listen periodically to the right wing media talking machine so that I, too, can be fair and balanced.

And do you know what they were saying while Obama was carefully weighing all of the evidence brought before him about the situation in Afghanistan? They all seemed to be fully convinced of what awful thing the inexperienced "community organizer" might be planning for our country by not following the advice of a general with thirty years experience if he did not decide to send more troops. After the announcement was made to send more troops, suddenly his speech wasn't good enough, the plan wasn't clear enough, and establishing an exit strategy was a bad idea.

I watched the president give his speech, carefully listening to everything he said. Then I read it twice. It was a very well thought out message precisely explaining why leaving the situation in Afghanistan in its current state would clearly be a threat to American security. He specifically said that if he thought our nation's security would not be at risk by doing so, he would bring all of our troops home tomorrow. And I believe he truly means that. He just got the Nobel Peace Prize for crying out loud! They don't just go handing those out to anyone, you know. We cannot risk nukes in the hands of these maniac terrorists who actually think they are justified by God to kill the infidel that they have decided is us.

The president is playing the cards he's been dealt. He's got Republicans ready to be the Devil's advocate on either side of the decision no matter which way it goes. He's got Democrats whining and crying because he hasn't saved the world the way they think he ought to yet. Now I'm getting tons of emails from various activist groups totally shooting down the need for more troops in Afghanistan. He carefully laid out his exit strategy for both Iraq and Afghanistan in his speech. Isn't that what we want; to end the wars? We can't just wave a magic wand and make them go away.

I am so disappointed with all of this. Does anyone think things will be better in 2010 when Obama loses support in the House or Senate due to all of the complaining. How about in 2012 when some Republican gets elected instead? You saw who was running the last time.

I understand why people are frustrated and want to point fingers in one direction or another. Many people I know are out of work and the jobs there are don't pay enough.

My husband is extremely lucky to have a $12/hr computer technology job in his field of study, a very good wage for where we live. After working a nine hour day, he continues to go to college full time and get student loans in hopes that it will enable him to make more money someday. I work the rest of the time when I'm not taking care of our two sons. I haven't gotten a raise in four years even though my boss says she doesn't know what she'd do without me. And we live paycheck after next to tax return with no savings and no hope of buying a used car, let alone a house.

My inlaws are probably going to lose their house because my father in law lost his job of 28 years to outsourcing and he hasn't been able to find steady work ever since. Even though he went back to school to try to establish a new trade, he's been unemployed for five months looking constantly for any kind of job he can get with no luck.

The list goes on and on. But the last person I'm ready to blame for this is Barack Obama.

Now is not the time to bicker and continue to argue over everything President Obama is doing. He has many things to fix from the broken world he inherited from Bush. He is doing his absolute best to make the right decisions for our country and I really think people ought to give him a chance to do his job. Of course we are not going to all agree on everything he chooses to do, but none of us has walked a mile in his shoes.

Of course we'd all like to see the money of the wars spent on job creation instead. Somebody probably should have mentioned that to Bush back when he decided to finish his Daddy's war in Iraq.

Obama is trying to fund job creation with the stimulus money that everybody wants to grumble about already.

Please, fellow Americans, give Mr. Obama a chance before you destroy it. He's the best hope our country may have for many years to come and we are truly lucky to have elected him as our president.

We need to quit blaming and move forward. These are the party line issues that stop government from getting anything accomplished. I have heard over and over “ I don’t support the war but I support the troops” well if this is true you have to realize not supplying the troops with the resources they need then you are not supporting the troops.

Would you put a police officer on the worst streets in the USA without a functionally operating vehicle? With out a bulletproof vest? With out a properly working gun?

Well by demanding no money be spent except for bringing our troops home this is what you are telling your government to do to the troops that are still in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Have you spoken to the troops that are there? Have been there? Many of them will tell you that we cannot pull out now. If we do we will be back in 5-10 years to finish what was started. We were there when George Sr. was president and guess what we were back 10 years or so later. These troops would rather finish the job than have to see their children suffer and see the things they have seen.

Being a mom of two military sons that between the two have had 5 tours in Iraq I for one would love to see them all home. But Stop and listen to the people that have been there know the facts first hand.

If you do not have a proper pull out plan you are signing the death warrants to many of our troops. We need to give our support not just for the troops but also for the resources they need and yes that may mean spending more money but if it takes more money spent to bring them home safely I say spend the money bring them Home Safely!
