Is China Firing a Warning Shot Across America's Bow?
This is pretty scary if true, since China could bring down the U.S. economy in a day by selling its vast holdings in U.S. Treasury bonds:
Chinese regulators have told domestic banks to stop interbank lending to U.S. financial institutions to prevent possible losses during the financial crisis, the South China Morning Post reported on Thursday.
The Hong Kong newspaper cited unidentified industry sources as saying the instruction from the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) applied to interbank lending of all currencies to U.S. banks but not to banks from other countries.
Obviously it's not in China's interest to wipe out all of its Treasury holdings, and they are scrambling to get Japan, Korea, and other Asian countries to coordinate their U.S. economic strategy.
But still - is this a warning shot across America's bow?
