Iraq Sellout #2: Call Congress Today
On Thursday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi will try again to force the House to approve $163 billion more of our tax dollars for the occupation of Iraq - nearly $100 billion for 2008 plus nearly $70 billion more for 2009.
Last week, your passionate calls persuaded several Democrats to vote no and helped delay the vote for a week. Please call your House Representative again today at 202-224-3121!
We are outraged because this Democratic Congress was elected to end the occupation, not fund it forever. A new Democrats.com poll found an overwhelming 68% of Americans want to bring our troops safely home within 6 months - a significant increase from 54% last September.
As our economy tanks, we cannot afford to waste $163 billion more of our tax dollars for Iraq on top of the $562 billion we've already wasted and the $3-5 trillion overall cost, included tripling the price of gasoline.
On Tuesday, the conservative voters in Mississippi's 1st CD elected a Democrat, Travis Childers, because he promised to bring our troops home from Iraq. There is absolutely no political reason for any Representative to vote for the occupation.
So it's urgent for everyone to call his or her House Representative (not Senators) today with a simple message: Not One More Penny to Occupy Iraq!
This battle is far from impossible. On January 16, 42 progressive Democrats voted against the last $70 billion blank check. This week, 21 more Democrats promised to vote no (see below). Most Republicans oppose Pelosi's bill because it includes some domestic spending, so a large bloc of progressive Democrats can defeat it.
Call the switchboard at 202-224-3121 or find your House Representative's name and direct dial by entering your address on the right side here. Please report the results of your call here:

Iraq Sellout #2
I called congressman Chaka Fattah's (Philadelphia) office and thanked him for voting no and
said (to his secretary) to keep up the good work.
Bill Foster
I, again have called and got a rushed operator. I told him I oppose the spending on the Iraq War and that Foster should vote against it and bring our troops home. I have a brother-in-law preparing for another tour in Iraq and friends in Afghanistan now. No more war!
To Ted in Tammy Baldwin's district. I agree. What is it? We called Tammy before our primary in Feb. and talked with her to get behind John Laesch, IL-14 and she wouldn't. Feingold wouldn't really either because of friendly relations with Durbin. Whatever!

called them and speaker pelosi....all said they would "pass on the comments" which means......"whatever"....here in palm bay florida, because of the REPUBLICAN governors tax cuts, i saw and helped neighbors, alot in t-shirts and shorts, with shovels trying to save friends, relatives and neighbors houses from catching fire. because of the funding cuts.....there is no money to hire new fire fighters or buy new equipment to replace old, antequated equipment...let's continue to support "bush's viet nam" and let our infrastructure continue to crumble..i mean, we all have health care, a roof over our heads, cheap perscription drugs and our educational system is the best in the world right? it's great to have a president that can't pronounce "NUCLEAR" but has the power to use the weapons
my call
I called Madam Speaker's number and was able to leave my message. I'm wondering if she listens to them or just notices the numbers. I'm hoping that someone might be sifting through, at least, to get an idea of what's coming in. Anybody know?
No more money for IRAQ
I called Nancy Pelosi's office to express my opinions and was put through to her comment line where I left a message to the Speaker that we should not approve funds for Iraq.
Iraq Spending...Rep misses vote, Why we need draft.
I call Rep. Diana Degette at 1:44pm and asked that she vote no on Iraq funding. I was told she is out of town for her daughters graduation. So I asked if she were in town would she vote NO and the reply was "yes I think so."
Well if it turns out her vote might have made a difference here I will be a little pissed. This is why we need a friggin draft in this country. Poor peoples kids are dying in this colossal foolhardy ploy cooked up by Dick'n Dub to make their oil cronies rich and the military contractors fat...and she gets to go to her daughters graduation. Some are going to funerals and she is off to graduation. Sweet.
Bill Foster Illinois 14th Congressional District
I called Bill Foster’s office yesterday and said the only more money I wanted to see us spend in Iraq was to get us out and into collaboration with a multination stabilization of which our go-it-alone military incursion has been the complete opposite. The aide who took my call said he would pass the message along.
Foster is a Democrat, successor to Republican former House Speaker Dennis Hastert. He defeated his Republican opponent 52.5% to 47.5%.
I think Foster is reachable but still feeling his way in and getting the feel of a geographically non-compact district comprising areas than may never have been other than Republican since the Civil War.
Any of you who have friends in the district, please encourage them to contact his office. The towns of Algonquin, Aurora, Bartlett, Wheaton, and Winfield are in the district partially. It contains entirely the towns of Amboy, Annawan, Ashton, Atkinson, Batavia, Big Rock, Binghampton, Bristol, Burlington, Cambridge, Carpentersville, Central, Compton, Cortland, Deer Grove, DeKalb, Dixon, Dundee, East Dundee, Elburn, Eldena, Elgin, Elva, Fox, Franklin Grove, Gap Grove, Geneseo, Geneva, Gilberts, Hampshire, Harmon, Helmar, Hinckley, Hooppole, Huntley, Kaneville, Kewanee, LaFox, Lee, Lee Center, Lily Lake, Lisbon, Little Rock, Maple Park, Maytown, McGirr, Millbrook, Millington, Minooka, Montgomery, Mooseheart, Nachusa, Nelson, Newark, New Bedford, Normandy, North Aurora, Orion, Osco, Oswego, Paw Paw, Pingree Grove, Plano, Plato Center, Plattville, Portland, Prairieville, Prophetstown, Rock Falls, Rollo, Sandwich, Scarboro, Shabbona, Shabbona Grove, Shaw, Sleepy Hollow, Somonauk, South Elgin, Spring Hill, St. Charles, Starks, Steward, Sublette, Sugar Grove, Sunny Hill, Sycamore, Tampico, Udine, Ulah, Valley View, Virgil, Walton, Warrenville, Wasco, Waterman, Wayne, West Brooklyn, West Chicago, West Dundee, Yorktown, and Yorkville.
Again, any of you outside the district who have friends in any of these places, contact them to have them contact him.
Foster’s office numbers are in DC 20515 (202) 225-2976, in Batavia, IL (630) 406-1114, and in Dixon, IL (815) 288-0680.
As I finish this up I note that his website shows that he voted against the Democratic budget (http://foster.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=91384).
Oregon
No need to call -- entire Oregon Democratic delegation now on board.
Iraq spending
I called Maria Cantwell's office to say don't support the spending bill for the occupation of Iraq. Still getting a busy signal for Patty Murray, and Rep Jay Inslee
Jim McDermott thanks
I wrote to my Congressperson, Jim McDermott (Seattle, WA). The votes had already taken place today, but I thanked him for his votes against Iraq war funding, as well as supporting his and my values regarding veterans' rights, troop withdrawal timelines, torture issues, contractor criminal liability, military bases in Iraq, disaster relief, and unemployment extensions.
Call against more spending on Iraq
I called Jackie Speier's office, & told them that I do not want any more funds allocated for the Iraq war, and voiced my strong objection to Nancy Pelosi's proposal. I was asked for my name and county, and was told that my message would be passed along to Ms. Speier.
Iraq Funding Bill
I called my Congressman, Hank Johnson, Congressional District 4, GA. His aide told me that Congressman Johnson was voting against the bill.
Iraq funding bill
I left a message with Gifford's representative at 7:55 this AM. I told him that I noticed that she had not signed on to vote against funding this occupation without a deadline. I reminded her that she is facing heavy competition for her seat here in CD30 from a well funded Republican and that she might want to consider that the majority of voters here want out of that occupation. I asked that she vote against the bill.
Iraq Sell-out
When I called Sam Farr's DC office, I learned that not only did he vote No on further funding of the Iraq occupation, but that he is still a member of the Out of Iraq Congressional Caucus. He has voted for a timeline for troop withdrawal. Democrats.com is in error for having not put his name on the No on 1-16-08 list .
Joe Baca
Called rep. Baca @ 1PM and was advised that they weren't sure how Baca would vote. Thats fairly typical- his office usually doesn't advise how he will vote on upcoming legislation.
War funding
I called Rep. John Salazar's office after hours. When the capitol switch board answered she told me that her system was down and she could not look up who the rep. was. I knew the rep. so was able to get through to his office that way. I left a message- no more money for a war that we should have never begun in the first place. As I looked how the votes were cast I noticed that our rep. did not bother to vote on the issue.
No surprise really, Senator Allard misses most important votes also. Can someone please tell me how these people in good conscience can collect a pay check?
I also would like to know why the citizens of this country do not have the same retirement package and health insurance as these elected representatives, they are too good for social security and created their own system. The majority of people, democrats and republicans need to be thrown out of office!!!
As we all know Bush won the election the first time around by a questionable process in Florida that his brother Jeb Bush oversaw. He has proceeded to bankrupt this country fighting a war that his father George Sr. started with the same Dick Chenney at the helm pulling the strings. The good old boys are all in or have been in the oil industry at some time in their past business dealings. They raped America and played on people's fears for the terrible thing that happened on 9/11.
We pay $31,000.00 for health insurance a year with premium and deductible for my husband and I before the policy picks up a dime and then we enjoy a 20/80 split. We are going to have to let it go and are in our late fifties/early sixties. Fortunately we were not stupid enough to buy a house with no money down and $2,000.00+ a month mortgage payments so we are not looking for the government, ie. tax payers to bail us out.
We no longer can save anything for retirement and the amount that we had in mutual funds is all but lost. We have cut to the bare bones on food, and now we can't afford to drive. Since Nixon in the 1970's they have been trying to do something about energy dependence and did nothing!!
Now our children are saddled with a debt that they will never be able to repay, will have no quality of life because we are supporting the illegals that have taken over our medical system and educational system and they say we will need more prisons soon because they are overflowing.
Outsourcing of jobs has made the wealthy wealthier and the rest of the country with much less opportunity.
Wake up America!
NO not another dime for a lost war. Those people have been fighting one another for thousands of years with a much different mind set and culture; to think that we can spread democracy over there just shows you how clueless this government is and how driven by greed they are.
By the way, my husband supported the war from the beginning, I NEVER did but to question that decision meant that you were not patriotic back then and I took some heat for my opinion, I am glad to see that more and more people are coming to their senses.
I am mad as _____ and I am not going to take it anymore and I do vote!
Iraq war funding
I called the office of my congressman, Silvestre Reyes, 16th district of Texas, and urged him to vote against the iraq war funding bill. On last week's vote, he voted "Yea".
Calling congress
I called Patrick Murphy and Brad Ellsworth both of whom I worked for with MoveOn by phone canvassing when they were running for office. I also called my congressman Tom Udall and horrible Heather Wilson the congressperson for the 1st district. I told them all to vote no on funding the war profiteers. Ellsworth is a Blue Dog and his intern engaged me in an argument. All the rest thanked me & said they'd pass the message along. Oh, I also called Steny Hoyer-big deal, huh? Udall's office knows me by name because I'm always calling them. I also volunteered to work for him in his bid for the Senate.
calling congress re Iraq war profiteer funding
The only comments I see are dated May, not June. Maybe everyone feels they "did their bit" and are not calling for the latest outrage. I hope that's not true.
