As Congress considers President Bush's request for another $100 billion for Iraq, 68% of Americans want Bush to bring U.S. troops home within 6 months, according to a Democrats.com telephone poll of 628 adults conducted from May 1-4, 2008 by ICR.
The poll marks a 14% increase from 54% in September. Most of that increase (11%) came from those who want Congress to require Bush to use existing funds to bring our troops safely home, bringing that total to 51% - a majority of Americans.
Broken down by party, 85% of Democrats want our troops home within 6 months, as do 78% of Independents. By contrast, only 32% of Republicans want our troops home soon.
Democratic support grew by 15% since September, and Independent support grew by 20%. By contrast, Republican support was unchanged.
The new poll differs slightly from last September's poll because Congressional Democrats have proposed giving President Bush $70 billion more than he requested in order to avoid another unpopular funding vote before the November election.
The new poll asked: "President Bush wants Congress to spend 100 billion dollars more in tax dollars this year to keep U.S. troops in Iraq." The comparison data below is only for the identical questions, with last September's data immediately below in italics.

Despite overwhelming public support for using the "power of the purse" to bring our troops home, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has repeatedly refused to even consider this approach. As a result, the approval rating of Congress has fallen to historic lows.
Since last September's poll, economic growth has slowed to a near-recession and a record 73% of Americans believe America is on the "wrong track." A record 68% of Americans oppose the war in Iraq and growing number of Americans believe the recession in the U.S. is closely tied to the $12 billion monthly cost of the occupation of Iraq. Since February, anti-war groups have emphasized the financial cost of the occupation.
On January 16, 42 House Democrats voted against Bush's previous request for $70 billion. A total of 92 House Democrats have told Bush they would only fund the safe deployment of U.S. troops out of Iraq by the end of his term in January 2009.
"More than two-thirds of Americans want to bring our troops safely home within 6 months," said Bob Fertik of Democrats.com. "It's long past time for George Bush and the Democratic Congress to listen to the American people. The 500,000 members of Democrats.com will continue to urge Congress to oppose any more funds for Iraq," Fertik added.
80,000 Americans have emailed their Senators and Representatives to oppose any more funds for Iraq:

No new funding for the war in Iraq
We have already overspent on the Iraq war. I called Rep. Nancy Pelosi and told her office I was against any increase in spending. Her office told me that Nancy Pelosi voted against any funding increase for the war in Iraq.
what's the truth?
so, is Madam Speaker for or against this funding? When I called today, nobody offered any info. I was routed to her "comment line." so I left my comment.
no more subsidies for the War in Iraq Say no to Nancy Pelosi
I find Nancy Pelosi's trying to force One Hundred and sixty three billion dollars for the war in Iraq to be the act of a turncoat and a black mark on the Democratic party. Actually any party or person in that party that wants to pay in so much for this war to be a traitor to not only the party but to those serving in Iraq.
If she pushes this through than she is condoning the war and all it stands for. Money for anything connected to this war is money out of the pockets of the citizens of this country especially considering the polls of Americans regardless of party being asked about this expenditure giving it a resounding no!
I am paying almost $4.00 a gallon for gas. Why? The war in Iraq. Why are people finding almost impossible to live in today's economy? The war and it's escalating costs. Yet she wants to give Bush and Chaney even more money.
Whatever else I do as an Independent voter it will be to not vote for anyone who votes yes on this disgusting expenditure.
Nancy Pelosi should resign her seat and give it to a Democrat that is responsible enough not to give away my money on this Vietnam of the 2000s.
Iknow my words may sound radical but I cannot help feeling betrayed by the very people who declared this war as wrong and are now in support of this rediculous bill.
I hope you join me in this and maybe we can send a message to Pelosi, Kerry, Kennedy and others who are sitting on the fence. I called and these two have not the backbone to declare their intent. I find this surprising and very troublesome. What has happened to the promise of stopping this war and stopping the Bush radicals responsible for the escalating prices of this war and the deaths of so many loved ones in a war they started on lies and will end with the sorrow of a nation for it's brave soldiers serving to satisfy the lust of the Bush followers. What is happening seems of no import to them and who can blame them when they are making billions on tyhe backs of the dead. On the backs of the very people they swore to protect. We can only hope that this money does not get released and that Chaney is impeached and Bush along with him. For the lies, money and pain they have extorted for their own people they deserve no less. Now we can only hope that their are enough people who want to do the right thing before more people lose their loved ones, homes, savings and way of life they were promised would be taken care of by these two criminals.
AMEN!!!!!!!!!

All I have to say is "GO ON! You are completely on point "bkrsrb". You are not the only one who feels this way! I agree with every word you have written and I could not have said it better, for all that I have tried! We need to come together and take it to the streets. That is the only way we are going to fight this, Bush or no Bush. We are going to have to fight it in the new presidency too. BUSH AND CHANEY FOR PRISON.
