Iraqi Victims
Casey Sheehan
Fallen Heroes

March 19 marks the 5th Anniversary of Bush's disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq - yet there is no end in sight.

The costs so far are staggering: 4,000 young Americans killed, tens of thousands maimed... 1 million Iraqis killed, millions maimed... $562 billion in tax dollars stolen from our children... $3 trillion cost to our economy through veterans care, weapons replacement, higher oil prices, and the collapsing dollar. All that in just 5 years!

We elected a Democratic Congress in 2006 to bring our troops home, but they keep giving Bush blank checks. Incredibly, Congress will soon vote on another $102 billion blank check.

On this 5th Anniversary, it is time for everyone who hates this occupation to do something about it. And we're making it as simple and effective as we can.

We're calling it a Fax-In. It's like a sit-in, only you can do it from home.
http://iraqfaxin.com

1. Fax an image to Congress that visually expresses how you feel about the endless occupation of Iraq. We've posted a few ideas here, but we welcome all of yours (post thumbnails please with link to original).
http://iraqfaxin.com

Iraq Protests
Iraq War Art

Just print it out in black & white and make sure it's readable enough to go through a fax.

Make a simple cover page with your name(s), street address, email address, and the number of years you have voted. Write a brief message explaining the image you chose and why you want to bring our troops home. It's easiest if you do this in your word processor and save the document (see below).

In big thick letters, write "OutOfIraq.org" on the cover page and the image itself.

Look up the fax (and phone) numbers of your Representative and Senators by entering your address on the right side here:
http://usalone.com/
or use this directory:
http://www.congress.org/congressorg/directory/congdir.tt?command=congdir

2. Email your Representatives by signing our "Out of Iraq" petition on the right side here:
http://iraqfaxin.com

As you fill out the form, copy/paste your fax cover message (see above) into the "personal message" box.

This will accomplish several goals:

a. Tally how many people participate - we really need a million or more!
b. Let you forward this message to your friends.
c. Let your Representatives respond to you easily via email.

3. Share with Democrats.com your "personal message" and other thoughts on this effort by copy/pasting it as a comment reply here (login required):
http://iraqfaxin.com

4. Spread the word about this effort through other blogs, social networks like Facebook, talk radio, etc. Just tell everyone to visit IraqFaxIn.com

Polls show over 60% of Americans believe the war in Iraq wasn't worth fighting. That translates to 140 million Americans!

If we can get just 1 out of 100 Americans who oppose the war to join our fax-in, that's 1.4 million people.

So please participate - and pass this on to everyone you know who doesn't want to waste one more soldier, civilian, or dollar in Iraq.

As always, thanks for all you do.

Today everyone knows that Saddam and al-Quida were not united nor linked in any way. Today everyone knows that WMDs were a myth, created by Rice and others to force an unnecessary war upon the American people. Today the USA is the most hated nation on this planet, and the dollar is not only at an all-time low, but is rejected in numerous nations while Americans are spat upon, forced to leave, and bare the brunt of scorn and contempt. W's War for Oil must stop immediately, and the warhawks (Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Gates, Powell, and the rest) must be tried for crimes against humanity before the World Court, and when found guilty, all must be shot.

Bush lied and people died!!!

I am a Viet Nam war veteran! I went over with the First Air Cavelry when it flew in helicopters. Col Hal Moore of "They Were Soldiers" was my battalion commander in training in Georgia, I missed the Ia Drang valley battle by two weeks. When I returned I researched that war and the events and issues which got us into a war. 50,000 Plus Americans died because politicians DID NOT have the guts to say NO to an administration that was lying to Americans. We were told the same nonsense " If we don't stop them in Viet Nam they will soon be at our borders" That was a total fabrication, PERIOD!!
All Ho Chi Minh wanted was a free Viet Nam without French rule.
All this is well documented by Archimedes Patti, Station Chief of the OSS in SE Asia during WW II.
Now America is engaged in a conflict built on lie after lie. Bush and his supporters have yelled "WOLF, WOLF!" to often. Nothing he says can be believed. It is time for congress to pull the rug out from under this lier and his ilk and put America back on track to truth, justice and following of the US Constitution.
The soldiers deserve better from you! and the families deserve better from you! America deserves better FROM YOU!
They deserve you standing up for getting us out of a war built on lies. They deserve fathers, mothers and sons and daughters, coming home before more are injured and scared for life. They deserve America that is an example to the world as a democracy rather than a dictatorship where the ruler does as he pleases with no regard to the laws that made America great! Finally they deserve the trillions of dollars, spent on a bottomless pit of ignorance as to the real issues that control the people of the Middle East, and spend these trillions on education, health care, improving the standing of those on Medicare or retired, infrastructure, developing alternative energy sources that are proven such as wind and solar, giving all persons desiring a college education the support that will keep them off the "public dole" in other wards, support a well educated public.
I have said enough, it is now time for YOU TO ACT.

Dear Congressional Leaders:

We’re appalled by the costs, both financial and medical, of this on-going disastrous war.

We’re even more appalled that Congress keeps signing blank checks, while the pundits proclaim that the Iraq War is no longer a leading concern of Americans; finances are.

Of course the reality is that much of the financial debacle facing both the country and individuals stems directly from the obscene costs of this war.

Corporations = Money to Politicians = Blood for Oil and War Contracts
Did Greed start the Iraq War?
What was the purpose of, the Iraq War?
Was it because Corporations pressured President Bush to help give the economy a lift?
Was it that contractors, who contributed to President Bush’s campaigns, wanted billion dollar contracts from the US?
Was it Bush's ties to oil?
Ties that perhaps allowed this war to cause fear of supply resulting in higher barrel prices. Fear that resulted in a jump from $22 to $102 a barrel. This rise in oil prices have allowed oil companies soaring profits with their CEOs making 20+ million dollars in yearly salaries. The oil and gas industry has spent $393.2 million on lobbying the federal government with 80% of the money going to Republicans. Halliburton, or where Dick Cheney held the CEO position, had its stock rise from $6.50 per share to $37.00 per share in only five years because of the war contracts they received. The money Halliburton received from President Bush's non-competitive contract is over $20 billion dollars. Halliburton/KBR was caught giving bribes to get the contracts back in 2004, yet they are still receiving billion dollar contracts from the Bush Administration today.

Also, one note to remember from our past, Ronald Reagan had given over $1 billion dollars to Bin Laden in the 1980's during the Afganistan vs. Soviet Union War - our tax payer dollars also went to fund the Taliban as well.

If greed caused the war, then those who started the war because of greed should be sentenced to prision - that includes Bush, McCain, and Cheney.

We are all aware that the main problem in Iraq is the religous hatred of one another. We are only compounding this problem by occupying their nation. We cannot force either peace or democracy on them.
Force will only be met with force. The police and army are now fighting the religous malitias'. We must move on to another of our screw ups, Afganistan.
We cannot afford and do not have the stomach to occupy Iraq for even the 50 years that McCain would have us do. How in the world will we pay for our Crusades all over the world?

First there is a real threat. 9/11 was a real event. We know who the actors were, and where they came from. It was mostly Saudi Arabia. Friends of the Bush family. They had been taking flying lessons, getting ready, soaking up the delights of our culture, like strip clubs, for instance. We knew who they were at the time, we were watching. You, President Bush, and all your advisors knew, and were briefed. Condoleeza Rice wasn’t worried, neither was Cheney. It was your administration’s decision that 9/11 was just the thing you needed to revive your plan to take us to war with Iraq. You manufactured intelligence, cherry picked what worked for you, and then tried to scare us to death with images of mushroom clouds. While backing off the wealthy and well connected son of a Saudi mogul, Osama Bin Ladan. Why do you in Congress go along with this tactic destined for such tragedy for the people of Iraq, for our sons and daughters sent from their National Guard assignments here at home where we need them, to Iraq over and over.

Mr. President, and you, all of you, Republicans and Democrats alike, who voted for the Iraq War Resolution, owe us—We The People—an apology. It is you, all of you, who started “The War On Terror” that now, since you took the terror to the “terrorists” in Iraq, (who, by the way, weren’t there prior to our arrival in Iraq) have created the best and biggest advertisement and recruiting scheme in history for every young discontented and alienated misfit in the world to join the jihadists, because now they do really believe that we are The Great Satan. Thanks a lot.

And this war on terror has given you the excuse you were looking for to change the rules and strip us of our constitutional rights one by one. Stack the Supreme court to take choice away from women (the better to control them), and to prevent the carriage of justice for anyone detained illegally, transported to a foreign country for torture and then disappeared to Guantanimo, without representation or a hearing. Where did Habeas Corpus go? Has it moved to Canada to join the hordes now fleeing your ruinous governance. We are losing everything, our houses, our civil rights, our sons and daughters, our bridges are falling down and you tap dance on the porch waiting for your successor to bring us more of these good old days. Thanks a lot Congress. Thanks a lot Mr. President. Isn’t it Romantic?

GET US OUT OF IRAQ
The reasons for our invasion of Iraq were manufactured to support the invasion. Criminal acts.
As far as democratizing Iraq, I believe that their culture/heritage prohibits that from happening. Then why invade? Take out Saddam because he was a ruthless dictator? There are a few more in the world. Shall we invade those countries too so that their populations may enjoy the same "freedoms" we have bestowed upon the citizens of Iraq? Taking out Saddam along with our occupation, destabilized Iraq and opened its borders to terrorists that Saddam kept out. When George Bush decided not to go to Bagdad to topple Saddam's regime it was because He and Cheney realized that it would be a destabilizing quagmire. Boy, were they right! George W Bush and His administration seem to have an agenda to spread His religious and political philosophies throughout the world. He acts more like a King or Dictator than an elected President. Instead of representing his people, He rules over his subjects!
Please stop funding this war! Bring our troops (and His mercenaries) home!
What a monumental waste of our resources, including but not limited to, LIVES, MONEY and our GLOBAL IMAGE!

Bush's lies to get us into Iraq, when we should have been pursuing whomever attacked us on 9/11/01, have resulted in MORE terrorist danger for Americans & our allies. Bush’s "war" has cost thousands of American lives, and upwards of 1,000,000 Iraqi lives plus innumerable injuries and maimings in both countries.

The US economy is in a shambles, as the costs of his phony war & the blatant gouging by large oil companies(Bush contributors all) are wreaking havoc on middle, moderate & lower income American families.

The Medicare mess has helped drug companies & HMOs (more Bush contributors), hurting seniors & the disabled.

Massive tax breaks for the wealthy (more Bush supporters) have been another administration priority.

His pandering to the conservative Christian minority over issues like stem cell research (where Bush, speaking from both sides of his mouth, is fine with some old, corrupted stem cell lines, but not new ones) is causing suffering & death to as many as 100,000,00 Americans (& their loved ones)daily.

Mr. Bush, it is everything, stupid!

AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER, POLITICS HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT LIES, DISHONESTY, COVERUPS, DECETEFUL, POWER HUNGRY, SELF-ABSORBED, NOBODIES WHO NOW HAVE THE CHANCE TO RULE THE WORLD!!! WHEN "THE PEOPLE" SPEAKS, NO-ONE HEARS...NO-ONE HEARS THE CRIES OF OUR OWN NATION!!! THE RICH GET RICHER AND THE POOR GET POORER!!!FOR YEARS "PROUD" MEN AND WOMEN FIGHT BECAUSE "ITS THE RIGHT THING TO DO", "ITS THE PATROTIC THING TO DO"...(NO, DON'T GET ME WRONG, I LOVE MY COUNTRY! I LOVE GOD, BUT PERSONALLY, WOULD NOT FIGHT FOR IT, NOR WOULD I LET MY CHILDREN FIGHT FOR IT!!!) FOR WHAT? SO WHEN THEY COME HOME, IF THEY COME HOME, SOCIETY CAN SPIT IN THEIR FACES, KICK THEM IN THE TEETH AND THEN TO THE CURB? GIVE THEM JOBS SO THEY CAN JUST MAKE ENDS MEET? AND THATS EVEN, IF THEY CAN GET A JOB. I DO NOT BELIEVE ANY ONE NEEDS A BIG WAR AND TO GO OUT OF ONES HOME TO FIND AND/OR SEEK OUT, IS ABSOLUTLY CRAZY!!!!!!!!! IS IT NOT BAD ENOUGH THAT BROTHER FIGHTS AGAINST BROTHER, RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN BACKYARDS??? WE SHOULD GO TO OTHER COUNTRIES AND BE PAWNS FOR A GOVERNMENT, WHO CAN'T EVEN HELP THE PEOPLE IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY??? WHAT HAPPENES TO THOUGHS PERSONS WHO ARE DISABLED AND GET OLD? THERE'S NOTHING, NOTHING BUT HEART ACHE, DEPRESSION, DISMAY, DESPAIR, POVERTY AND DEATH!!! OUR KIDS ARE BEING TRAINED TO SHOT GUNS, BOMB STUFF, AND KILL OTHERS...THEN PEOPLE WONDER "WHY" PEOPLE ARE THE WAY THEY ARE...INSTEAD OF SHOWING OUR YOUTH HOW TO LOVE, SHOW KINDNESS, BE CHARITABLE, HAVE FAITH IN OUR LORD THY GOD AND THE MORALS, VALUES, AND PRINCIPLES THAT HAVE BEEN PASSED DOWN, GENERATION TO GENERATION... OUR GOVERNMENT IS WORRIED ABOUT HELPING OTHER COUNTRIES LEARN THESE THINGS, WHEN THE GOVERNMENT HAS TAKEN MOST, IF NOT ALL OF THESE THINGS AWAY FROM US, THE PEOPLE HERE...I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST HELPING OUT MY FELLOW MAN, BUT ONLY IF WE'RE ASKED TO, OR SEE SOMEONE IN TROUBLE HELP THEM OUT...BUT "NO" LETS LIMIT WHO GETS INSURANCE, HOW MUCH, WHERE WE CAN OR CAN NOT GO, WHAT WE CAN DO AND CAN'T DO, LETTING PERSONS FROM ALL OVER COME INTO OUR COUNTRY AND NOT HAVE TO PAY TAXES FOR 7-10 YEARS WHEN OUR OWN PEOPLE ARE STARVING, HAVE NO WHERE TO LIVE, NOT ENOUGH TO EAT...WHILE GROUPS OF PEOPLE KEEP COMING TAKING JOBS AWAY FROM OUR COUNTRY MEN, MAKING MONOPOLIES ALL OVER OUR STATES...WHAT KIND OF DEALS DO THEY REALLY GET AND WHAT REALLY DOES THE GOVERNMENT GET??? BECAUSE FOR THE PEOPLE BORN INTO THIS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY HAVE TO BUST ASS THEIR WHOLE LIVE TO HOPEFULLY, ONE DAY OWN THEIR OWN HOME. UNTIL SOMETHING HAPPENES AND THEY LOSE NOT ONLY THEIR HOME BUT EVERYTHING THEY OWN BECAUSE SOMETHING AWFUL HAPPENS OR WORSE...RULES ARE FINE, IF EVERYONE FOLLOWS THE RULES?!?? MOST FINE AWAY AROUND THE RULES.....IS THIS FAIR??? KEEPING MOST OF THE PEOPLE AT LOWER MIDDLE CLASS TO POVERTY LEVEL, WHILE BUSINESS ARE BEING BOUGHT OUT BY LEGAL AND ILLEGAL GROUPS OF PEOPLE...WHERE ARE WE ALL GOING TO BE IN 10-20 YEARS??? ITS HIGH TIME TO PUT SOMEONE IN OFFICE WHO WILL SEE WHAT'S GOING ON AND STRAIGHTEN THIS HUGE MESS OUT, WHO NOT GOING TO GET POWER HUNGRY, SOMEONE WHO USES THE TWO EARS AND EYES THAT GOD GAVE THEM AND MAKE THINGS RIGHT!!!!!!!

Cheney and his puppet Bush are the most dangerous terrorists in this century. They are genocidal maniacs and war criminals, that need to be a) impeached; b) indicted for treason, war crimes and genocide; c) tried by a jury of their victims; and d) sent to Hague to answer for their crimes in front of International War Crimes Tribunal, alongside of Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Rove, Rice, Gonzales, Ashcroft, and about 95% of the congressmen/women. All of the above listed persons assets must be confiscated, and turned over to the victims of their crimes.

This country belongs to the People. It is time that People woke up and took what's theirs. Tremble, criminals, your hour is approaching.

Americans are hiring slaves to do the Iraq War Contract Work

  • Ann Adams1's picture

First Kuwait, a division of Halliburton where Dick Cheney held the CEO position, was caught giving bribes to our officials to get contracts for the Iraq War. Yet we are still giving them, as well as numerous other companies caught giving bribes to get contracts. Non-competitive contracts are rampant.

Not only non-competitive, bribe awarded contracts, but also slave labor. That's right, slaves are bought and paid for by our tax dollars. Lincoln is probably rolling around in his grave right now. Land of the free --- not if you are captured by a company the U.S. is awarding an Iraq War contract to. Below is a conversation with PBS Bill Moyers and Senator Waxman on how one company not only was giving bribes but also using people as slaves -- all on our tax dollars.

March 14th - Bill Moyers Show
BILL MOYERS: With no competitive bidding, the State Department gave First Kuwaiti $600 million dollars to build the U.S. embassy in Baghdad - the largest and most expensive embassy in the world. this American fortress is now behind schedule and over budget - to the tune of an additional $144 million dollars. But that seems almost mundane compared to the testimony of Rory Mayberry an American medic hired by First Kuwaiti.

RORY MAYBERRY: I believe I am one of only a few Americans that have recently worked on the site of the new embassy in Baghdad. My impressions about how the construction was being managed left me incredibly disturbed.

BILL MOYERS: Mayberry described how he boarded a plane in Kuwait City along with 51 Filipino laborers - who thought they were heading for hotel jobs in Dubai.

RORY MAYBERRY: Mr. Chairman, when the airplane took off and the captain announced that we were heading to Baghdad, all you-know-what broke out on the airplane. The men started shouting, it wasn't until the security guy working for First Kuwaiti waved an MP5 in the air that the men settled down. They realized that they had no other choice but to go to Baghdad. Let me spell it out clearly: I believe these men were kidnapped by First Kuwaiti to work at the US Embassy. They had no IDs, no passports, and were being smuggled past U.S. security forces. I had a trailer all to myself on the Green Zone. But they were packed 25 to 30 a trailer, and every day they went out to work on the construction of the embassy without proper safety equipment. I saw guys without shoes, without gloves, no safety harnesses, and on scaffolding 30 feet off the ground, their toes wrapped around the rebar like a bunch of birds.

Every time we go to war we blow everything up and then send in companies like 'Only One Bid' Haliburton to charge us 10 times what its worth to rebuild the old outdated utilities that we just blew up. WE HAVE TO BORROW MONEY FROM COUNTRIES LIKE CHINA AND SAUDI ARABIA TO DO THIS (They buy treasury bonds). Then because of a disruption in the oil supply or even a rumor of one the oil price skyrockets helping Haliburton, big oil, and Saudi Arabia 10 times more. Bush has a ROBBER BARON presidency.

We (America) had a chance to unite the world after 9/11. Instead we blew it. We aren't any safer now than we were before. In fact more people in the world dislike or hate us than ever before. By staying in Iraq we're creating more terrorist than we can kill. We're also bankrupting our economy. We've killed more innocent Iraqis than bad ones. We're also causing the useless death of thousands of our brave American soldiers. Bush and his cronies even say torturing people is o.k? This war and this administration leave nothing to be desired! I hope and pray the next administration will bring back a little freedom, justice, and truth.

This is what confounds me

I am glad President Clinton got punished for lying to investigators. Yes, it was a small offense and I admit that I really liked Clinton and wish it had not happened. But it did and it was wrong.

King George and Co. have committed blatant, obvious criminal acts that violate laws and the Constitution. What in the heck is it going to take to get anything done on this matter? Why does my congress not hear me?

For the first time in my life of 40 years, everything I have ever held true and dear has been shattered. I no longer believe this is the greatest country. All I see is the average citizen fighting not to be squashed by powerful rich people. I see how other leading governments of the world listen to their people, provide health care for them, help them grow and prosper. We are becoming a 2nd or 3rd place power. My eyes are wide open.

Enough with War and Right-Wing Christians Supporting It

I am tired of the right-wing Christian group being for everything in this country that supports war and torture. Most of the Democrats are following God's word of "Whoever does so in the least of my brother, that they do unto mean?" and "Love the neighbor as yourself".

We believe in health care, homes for the homeless, food for the hungry, etc. The Republicans, they just believe in telling us what to do without taking the needle out of their eye first.

Republicans supporting Bush believe in torture, wars for greed, no healthcare – only death and illness- for poor children, having buddies with leaders (Saudi Arabia) that throw women in jail for being brutally gang raped, Abu Grave treatment used as a benchmark for prisioners, no medical advancements for those with terminal diseases that could be helped through technology, and no food and homes for the homeless. What type of Christians are these right wing Christians. Are we reading from the same bible?

As far as I remember, the only real mention of someone actually being in hell, beside the Devil and fallen angels, in the bible that Jesus described, was the rich man who ignored Lazarus, the beggar in front of the rich man's door asking for scraps. Sounds like a Republican to me.

i am not a educated man, but i do know right from wrong. while our bush adminstration is making there pockets lined with the tax payers money, we all sit here doing nothing about it. well this comming election, should be based on what they will do for the american people, and not how much money they can give to other countries, with all the money spent on wars, we could have rebuilt a lot of slums that the people of america are living in. it would have created plenty of jobs and put the money back in a strong economy. as for our old, we are forgetting them alltogether, it is about time we give them the respect and help the were promised many years ago. our goverment has let us down for a long time now and it is time for the american people to stand up and vote a whole new comgress, all theese years no one in congress has done anything for the people. so give some new people a chance. what do we have to lose if we do.

god bless america.

My Message to Congress

Just sent this to both my Senators and my Representative.

I have been a voting for 11 years. I am sending you these images because I wish to voice my opposition to this unending occupation in Iraq and my concerns about the future of my country. This war is costing us billions that my children and grandchildren will have to repay years from now. I am astounded when I hear politicians talk about cutting taxes at a time like this. For me, it’s a simple choice, you can have your war, or your tax cuts. You cannot have both. This country cannot afford it.

Furthermore, the additional cost of this war is the human cost. This war is creating a generation of desensitized young people filled with fear and hate, and that’s just here in the United States. In Iraq, we are helping to create a whole new generation of strong anti-American sentiment that decreases the safety of our people, at home and abroad. Our actions over there will haunt us for years to come.

Please consider these things when making decisions concerning the continued funding and oversight of this war.

Thank you for your attention and your service to this nation.

Ah Tim...don't you know by now that...

all caps is a no-no on the net? Unless, of course, you are missing both of your little fingers and can't quite make the shift. I somehow don't see that as a possibility.

Not to nitpick, but you did spell **losing** loosing. The devil indeed is in the details.

Sending a FAX to a Republican is futile, so I directed mine to one of the worst enablers on bunch on the Left: Joe Lieberman
Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer are getting them too ..they brought Joe back and were cowardly leaders of the Senate.

But I suggest to also send your FAXES to Steny Hoyer and Nancy Pelosi, and a few other Democratic leaders of the House -those two were in charge and ordered the troop withdrawal provisions and the 'No on Attacking Iran' provison pulled from last years Defense Spending Bills.

I uploaded this shot direct from an Iraqi group's website -while we still could communicate directly with them. This photo was taken not long after "Shock and Awe". A perfect title for this picture:

FAX To U.S. Senator Pete Domenici: Five years ago this Wednesday, March 19, 2003, Republican pResident George W. Bush launched his illegal, immoral and deceitful war against Iraq. The Defense Department just published its research of over 600,000 pages of secret Iraqi information and concluded there were no WMDs and they had no connection to Al Qaeda. This is longer than the 44 months it took to fight World War Two. Bush refuses to pull out or draw down, and McCain has committed to a hundred years of occupation and when questioned he said it might even be a thousand years. Yet, 75% of the American People are against it. But will the armed forces crumble under this commitment? Will the American economy last?

We could learn a thing or two from the Soviet Union’s illegal war against Afghanistan that ultimately bankrupted their country and destroyed their army. I saw a replay of an amazing television program by PBS that really brings realism to our situation in Iraq---maybe even more so than our comparisons to Vietnam. It was called “The People’s Century” Episode: “Guerilla Wars” and is about the Soviet Union’s preemptive invasion and subsequent ten year occupation of Afghanistan. A country with a much larger military, slightly larger in population, with more natural resources and smaller in economy than the United States. Here we are in recession after just six years—wait until ten years of Iraq occupation like the Soviet Union did in Afghanistan!!!!!!!

The Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989 after losing 15,000 killed and 35,000 wounded.
This is taken from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_war_in_Afghanistan_%281979-1989%29
We are at that 35,000 wounded figure now in Iraq.

The war started on December 25, 1979. CIA aid to the Mujahadeen began during 1980. The Soviet force was comprised of around 1,800 tanks, 80,000 soldiers and 2,000 AFV; then rose with the arrival of two more divisions to over 100,000. Under Soviet guidance, the Afghan armed forces were built up to an official strength of 302,000 in 1986. We once had that number in the new Iraqi Army. The Afghanistan armed forces were plagued with desertions, the army alone suffering 32,000 per year. Sounds familiar?

Soviet material losses were as follows: 118 aircraft, 333 helicopters, 147 tanks (each one of ours is a billion dollars and we have lost more), 1,314 Armored personnel carriers, 11,369 trucks and petrol tankers. Over 1 million Afghans were killed (over 1 million Iraqis have been killed). 5 million Afghans fled to Pakistan and Iran, 1/3 of the prewar population of the country, and another 2 million Afghans were displaced within the country (similar to Iraq).

The true cost of war/occupation in Iraq are the above. But we also have the $9 billion dollars in cash sent on pallets that went unaccounted for. The last two years of reports from the GAO have unearthed massive contractual fraud, war profiteering, overcharging, and defective materials provided by Halliburton for which Dick Cheney is still accumulating stock options. The Project for a New American Century (PNAC), Downing Street Memo, the oil maps of Iraq at Cheney’s Task Force in 2001, and the FISA requests to the Telecom companies in 2001; all show the war was preplanned before 9-11. Any way you slice it---it stinks like Watergate or Teapot Dome Scandal. You once had the good sense to see that Nixon could no longer be supported because he broke the law. Now is another such turning point in history. Do the right thing that your grandkids can respect.

Signed the petition and wrote this to Congress,Still trying to fax it.

To Congress,

I am writing to express my concerns about congress supplying the Pentagon with more outrageous funding for this illegal war. I do not want to support the militarism that has been implemented and funded by the military and congress .I do not want to contribute my paying taxes to go for the criminal war profiteering, sanctioning of torture, or the murder of civilians .I do not believe that dropping bombs on defenseless human beings,
the stealing of another countries resources for corporations, or environmental destruction is acceptable. The further expansion of military bases takes away from desperately needed funding for healthcare, social services, education, and decent jobs. They call it democratization but it is really imperialism with all the violence that goes with it The privatization and neoliberalism is for the wealthy, a minority here in this country who feel economics should be based on unequality, greed, and the worship of the market that we all know has no conscience or concern for anything but making profits by whatever the means.I do not wish to have as an American citizen a war-based economy along with the private security firms economic contributions. It is a disgrace which has nothing to do with a democratic society wanting to participate in a just and peaceful way with the rest of the world.

Sincerely,
Debbie Steele

Dick Cheney's arrogance
It's a good thing this exchange between Vice President Cheney and ABC News reporter Martha Raddatz took place in Oman, out of reach of the American public.

Raddatz observed of the 5-year-old Iraq war, "Two-thirds of Americans say it's not worth fighting, and they're looking at the value gain versus the cost in American lives, certainly, and Iraqi lives."

And Cheney's response: "So?"
