On Monday, Rep. John Conyers brushed off the heroic impeachment efforts of Cindy Sheehan, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Ray McGovern, Medea Benjamin, David Swanson, 300 dedicated impeachment marchers, 1 million petition signers, resolutions from dozens of cities and towns, and activists who called his office every 30 seconds.
His reasons? First, he doesn't have the support of a majority of the House (218 votes) to impeach Bush or Cheney. Second, FOX News would attack him.
Conyers doesn't have 218 votes today, but we can change that. Tell your Representatives to join the 14 sponsors of H.Res. 333, Articles of Impeachment for Vice President Cheney:

Also call them at 202-224-3121 and demand co-sponsorship of H.Res. 333 now.
Conyers would be attacked by FOX News, but we can change that too. Let's boycott FOX News advertisers:

We must also give Conyers a backbone transplant. Let's flood Conyers and other House Judiciary Democrats with more emails than ever:

Even as Conyers wimped out, fate smiled upon us in the smirking face of of Alberto Gonzales, who is just so bad that even Republican Senators can barely stop themselves from screaming at him.
Gonzales testified again today before the Senate Judiciary Committee to explain why he lied to them in his previous appearances. So what did Gonzales do? He lied and lied some more.
Everyone who cares about Justice is outraged. The Senate is finally considering perjury charges. But if the Senate filed charges, guess who'd have to prosecute? Alberto Gonzales' own utterly corrupt Justice Department!
Impeachment is the only cure and it's time for Congress to exercise it. Once they do, they will discover the American people support their efforts to hold Bush & Co. accountable. And an impeachment investigation into Abu Gonzo will lead directly to Cheney and Bush. He must know about some nasty skeletons - why else are they protecting him in the face of Republican outrage?
Tell your Representatives to Impeach Alberto Gonzales Now:

Rep. John Conyers
It seems, sadly, that this will sum up Rep. John Conyers' legacy: "He was the wrong man in the right place at the right time." History will judge the current United States Congress harshly indeed, should they continue to tremble and shrink before the grunts and barks of the swinish Executive Branch.
Well said Daniel..Conyers will spend the rest of his life...
as is Sandra Day O'Connor...in attempts to clean up his record. Besmirched forever. All the good has gone by the wayside.

Democrats are Democrats
Democrats are Democrats worse enemy. Keep up this foolishness and there will be just enough disenfranchised folks out there to tip the next election to the Republicans just like in 2000 when we so-called progressives sat on our hands and fond so much fault in the Gore candidacy. Remember? He wasn't liberal enough for us.
Have we forgotten the lesson of 2000 already?
I would think some of you would realize by now that Representative Conyers is not the person responsible for counting floor votes. That is the Majority Whip's job. Conyers is not the person that will decide if the House Judiciary Committee initiates Impeachment proceedings against Bush/Cheney. That call will be made by the Speaker.
If you think John Conyers is a wimp you have no idea who John Conyers is.
Conyers IS a wimp, as is
Conyers IS a wimp, as is Pelosi, and so are you if you believe their lies that they do not have the "power" to initiate impeachment. Current Congressional Leadership public opinion polls are as low as Dubya's, and the American People are fed up with being lied to by these do-nothing professional politicians. Like you, they are more concerned with winning elections than they are with doing what is right, and upholding the Constitution.
The Democratic Party is, and has been, divided since the Democratic "Leadership" Council (DLC) claimed to know what is best for our Party and its members. They, and the DINOs they control, are no better than the Republican neoconservatives that led us into this sorry state of affairs. Both groups feed from the same corporate tables. Gore chose Lieberman, the poster boy for the DLC, as his running mate and THAT was his downfall.
Until we clean up our own Party, it makes no difference who is in the White House -- Democrat or Republican. We American Liberal Democrats want our country back, and we have no beef with traditional American Conservative Republicans, because we have a common enemy: corporate fascist neoconservatism.
Unbelievable
Conyers won't hold impeachment hearings because Fox News will attack him??!! Well, gosh. Only one solution I see. Change parties, Representative. Lifetime protection against an attack by Fox News.
Congressman Farr sent me a letter re impeachment proceedings
As you all know he joined the list to impeach Cheney etc. I would like to share this letter with all of you because it probably shows the apprehensiveness congress is feeling right now about starting impeachment proceedings. This is a very difficult situation we all face, but we should never give up. He asks a question at the end of the letter that requires one to remember when Clinton was impeached. An impeachment would definitely effect oversight and action in Congress on other problems. Maybe that is why Conyers is acting this way...but we should all remember to never give up and do the right thing for our country.

Dear Loraine:
Thank you for contacting me in support of impeaching Vice President Dick Cheney. You will be pleased to know that I have cosponsored H.Res. 333, introduced by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH).
As you know, this resolution sets forth articles of impeachment stating that Vice President Cheney: (1) has purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States about a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, and about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda, to justify the use of the U.S. Armed Forces against Iraq in a manner damaging to U.S. national security interests; and (2) has openly threatened aggression against Iran absent any real threat to the United States, and has done so with the U.S. proven capability to carry out such threats, thus undermining U.S. national security.
I am hopeful that my colleagues in the House and Senate will join you and me in pursuing impeachment proceedings. In this time of increased oversight by the new Democratic Congress, it is imperative that this institution do all it can to rein in the megalomaniacal actions of a vice president with too much power and too little supervision.
However, I worry that we are running out of time to both bring impeachment proceedings against this Administration and try to solve some of the problems it has created or neglected, like accessible health care, affordable education, stable jobs, immigration reform, affordable housing, and - especially - getting out of Iraq. Though they would not welcome impeachment proceedings, the Republican Leadership would applaud Democrats being diverted from our other oversight responsibilities where real policy changes could make a more immediate difference.
Using the time frame of the impeachment of former President Clinton, it took 13 months (from approximately December, 1997 to January, 1999) to complete the process. During that time very little other legislative work was accomplished as all efforts by Congress focused on the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. Can we afford to use 13 months to try to oust this Administration when it will be replaced anyway in the November, 2008 elections?
But make no mistake: I have given the resolution of impeachment my full support and will do all I can to hold accountable all the officials of this Administration.
Thank you for your input to this valuable public debate. I appreciate hearing from you.
Sincerely,
SAM FARR
Member of Congress
SF/rd
impeachment should set stage for withdrawal
Indeed getting out of Iraq should be first and foremost. However, I believe an expedited impeachment and removal of Cheney and Bush is the best way to effect a rapid change of course in our Middle Eastern policies. The Neocons will be on the defensive, and as we learn more about their abuses of power it will increase bipartisan support for getting the troops home. Reining in this outlaw regime will restore democracy and decency to the United States, and will allow the whole world to move forward from this dark period.
Perhaps I'm missing
Perhaps I'm missing something, or overlooking something. Maybe I'm just a 'gloomy gus' but I'm perlexed about the the statement where Congressman Farr writes "I worry we are running out of time to both bring impeachment proceedings agaisnt this adminstration and to try to solve some of the problems it's created.......etc." He then names various issues that need attention.
I don't argue these things desparately need attention but neither do I see much being done in that direction right NOW. I see 2008 presidential candidates posturing all over the place. I see the Iraq war with no end in site, with perhaps another "surge" coming. I see Bush stonewalling, playing fast & loose with the truth, and doing the same things he's been doing that got us to this point in the first place. Who know what else is on his agenda?
What I don't see is any meaningful action on those issues (besides getting out of Iraq).
What is going to change between now and Janaury 2009? How are those issues Congressman Farr mentions going to be "solved" and when might that happen, and by whom? Does he mean they will be addressed before or after the 2008 election?
If it's not happening now (working on those issues), then why not impeach now???
It seems he is saying they
It seems he is saying they don't have time for quality oversight plus have an impeachment proceeding. I posted this letter to show how confusing it is to read a letter like that and then read other opinions on this website about how and why to impeach. Then to top it off he is saying it takes a lot longer to actually impeach someone than it actually does.
I think it is great that he signed on to promote the impeachment, but his reasoning has always been that he doesn't have confidence the impeachment will happen because there may not be enough votes, etc. I think his reasoning permeates throughout the congressional halls and that is part of the reason we aren't getting anywhere. Sometimes doing one thing at a time is good and allows more quality, but this is a time when they need to get in there and do more than one thing at a time and trust it will all turn out. With all those committees they have going, you would think it would happen like that.
Hit 'em in the pocketbook!
The Democratic National Committee called tonight, seeking the $100 donation that will get matching contributions, blah blah blah, blah, blah. I've heard enough.
Here's what I told the man. He commented on the fact that I was a generous donor in the past and they were counting on me. Well, guess what, sport? Don't start counting just yet.
Here's the deal.
I have contributed for years to the DNC and Progressive Democratic causes and to candidates in my district. I stated to the gentleman that I will not be contributing to the Democratic National Committee because when I did contribute, they didn't listen to the contributors. That's people like me that can afford to give. So, if you don't listen then, you don't listen now, and I get to keep my money. I told the gentleman that as of right now, this day, if the Democratic leadership cannot IMPEACH bu$h/cheney, DON'T BOTHER CALLING BACK. As far as I can tell, WE GOT THE BEST DEMOCRACY THAT MONEY CAN BUY. A f*cking one party system, bought and paid for by Big Business. So, tell Gov. Dean, actions speak louder than words. The Democratic leadership is not listening to the majority of the country. That's the people who vote and pay for all of this. The only way this country can stop it's illegal war on Iraq is to IMPEACH bu$h/cheney. They are criminals. They have violated the laws and the checks and balances set forth by the Constitution. bu$h/cheney has no use for the rule of LAW. Their actions have proved that point over and over again. WHEN ARE THE DEMS GOING TO GET THE HINT? WHEN THEY ARE WALKING OUT THE DOOR FOR THE LAST TIME?
So, no action, no money. For here is the next big thing these a..holes are going to be doing and if the Dems don't do something, we may have to clean the whole House and Senate out. bu$h talks big about doing for veterans. he and his party of conservanazi thugs are going to stop any increase to the VA and military health care.
If the Dems can't do anything about these criminals, then it's time for a party of Common Sense and Courage, because neither of the parties in power know what those two virtues are.
I don't care if Conyers can't get the votes, it's not about votes in Congress, it's about what the people want.
NO ACTION, NO MONEY! You cut off the contributions they will either cave or never figure this all out.
BUCK FUSH!!!!
Well said Doug...they haven't called me in a while...
but I have told them something like your message during past contacts.

Money talks
in any language. Politicians better learn right now it's not all about the next election or appearances before the next election. bu$h has killed thousands of Iraqis and Americans. Each and every life is more important than the sleezebag politicians who can't find the courage to SPEAK THE TRUTH. Indict the criminals and the bu$h war on Iraq will be over. I believe in the next Congressional recess, bu$h will send more troops to Iraq. It's a no win situation. he's trying to secure the country with too little too late. If president dumbass and rumdummy had listened to Gen. Sheseki, the US wouldn't be in the position it's in now.
So, speak up to them. It's the only way that finally might work.
No action, no money.
