10/9 Celebrate John Lennon's Birthday
It is dedicated to peace and bears the inscription 'IMAGINE PEACE' in 24 languages. Its construction and installation is a collaboration between Yoko Ono, the City of Reykjavik, Reykjavik Art Museum and Reykjavik Energy. The work is in the form of a wishing well from which a very strong and tall tower of light emerges. The strength, intensity and brilliance of the light tower continually changes as the particles in the air fluctuate with the prevailing weather and atmospheric conditions unique to Iceland. Every year it will light up between October 9th (Lennon's birthday) and December 8th (the day of his death). In addition the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will be lit on New Year's Eve, during the first week of spring and on some rare special occasions agreed between the City and Ono. The electricity for the light comes entirely from the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant.

Imagine Peace Tower
In what country? John Lennon was about love not hate.
Uh, in most geography books
Uh, in most geography books Reykjavik is in Iceland...
Imagine
Happy Birthday John from all of us. What a shame. You might have been our high profile, creative peace movement leader. The one I feel we need to keep spectacular protest energy going. I'll always remember you, your style and your ideals.
In Reykjavik?
Thanks for making it accessible to everyone Yoko! Because going to Reykjavik is just as easy as any of us walking down to our corner market!
Only Yoko could come up with a location like this "for the masses."
As Paul SImon says:
"Still crazy after all these years!"
Probably a good site for this light...
nights are 3-6 months long.

The greatest derangement of the mind is to believe in something because one wishes it to be so.
Grinch, I find it amusing
Grinch, I find it amusing that people like this miss the entire point of Yoko's tribute to John Lennon and his wish for world peace. What better place than Iceland...?
Ya think...
Something like this should be accessible to the common folk too? Especially since John Lennon spoke (and sang) to "The Working Class Hero?" Let me tell you "the working class heroes" of America will not be able to afford to go to a place like Iceland to see a tribute to John Lennon and ya' think Yoko would have understood that. Speaking as a working class representative (and progressive Dem.) I wanna see it, but there's no way in the world I can save up the kind of money to go to a place like Iceland. Make it accessible. At least something could've been place in Central Park or something.
John Lennon was not a
John Lennon was not a citizen of the USA, and Yoko was born in Japan. A neutral place like Iceland is the perfect spot for this memorial, as it is not intended to be a tourist attraction -- it is a statement. It is not something that you need to "see," but to understand and appreciate simply because it is there.
I believe that this is something Yoko understands very well, and so would have John. You could always travel to Yoko's NYC memorial to John -- Strawberry Fields in Central Park -- near where he was killed, as that is much closer to you. Think about it.
I have been to Strawberry Fields
Define what you mean that it's something to understand and appeciate because it's there. While I understand it may be a statement I would also like to point out that Europeans travel abroad at will a lot more than Americans, it's more of an inconvienience (sp.?). Statements are not always meant to be known, they also need to be seen. Putting it in a place where it's accessible to all is fair to everyone.
I thought I understood your
I thought I understood your point but now you seem to be pressing for no-place-but-the-USA. Is that your point? If so I think Bill already answered that objection. Would England do?
Perhaps the Tower as a statement will inspire reproductions throughout the world, and to any scale, including on front lawns with Green Laser Pointers (though Homeland Security may have a problem with that). One can also personally attempt to create something on a community scale though the site chosen sure has a lot of appeal:
-NIGHT FOR MONTHS
-WATER FOR REFLECTION
-CLOUD COVER OFTEN
-WATER VAPOR THROUGHOUT THE AIR COLUMN SO YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE AN INTENSELY LIT CYLINDER.
-ETC.
This inspires recreation, but I can tell you that even on the same scale, it will not have the same visual impact at most sites due to a lack of one or more items on the list above.
Not to mention
Not to mention pollution-free geothermal electricity. How much coal-, or nuclear-based power would be needed in most other countries?
The mentality of me, me, me, prevails. Where was this "outrage" when Yoko built the monument to John in Japan?
Is there a fight over the
Is there a fight over the location of the Peace Tower?
LOL! Not really -- it's a
LOL! Not really -- it's a done deal...
Define "fair." Would placing
Define "fair." Would placing it in the USA be fair to Icelanders? To Russians? To Samoans? To Chinese?
And finally, would it be fair to those who actually organized, planned, and paid for it? What if Yoko's next monument to John is built in Germany or Australia? Will you still be upset?
300,000,000 Americans are not the center of the universe -- at least not Yoko's.
Excellent point, Grinch.
Having spent two winters in central and southern Sweden respectively,
I can tell you they appreciate all the light they can get.
Sweden is south of Iceland.
Many parts of Iceland see little or no light
in December-February.
It's a beautiful Peace Tower.
Happy Birthday, John & Sean...
John is so missed and his creativity and honesty meant so much to us all, but just knowing this spectacular light tower is there will help us remember his message--imagine peace. What a beautiful tribute....thanks Yoko!
Iceland
10AM to 3PM is like twilight in Icelandic winters. Icelanders are thoughtful, intelligent, peaceful yet proud. You can drink from every river in Iceland except one (below the wool processing facility). Bananas grow in green houses and Icelandic homes are heated with geo thermal steam. A web cam on the peace tower would be a nice thing for the whole world to see.
