Homophobia is the Only Republican "Value"
What does it take to be expelled from the GOP? Emptywheel nails it as always:
When David Vitter admitted to using a prostitute service, no Republicans asked him to resign.
When it became clear that Pete Domenici had asked Bush and Gonzales to fire David Iglesias because the US Attorney didn't trump up charges against Democrats, no Republicans asked him to resign.
When it became clear that Bob Ney and Ted Stevens and John Doolittle and Don Young had been paid in exchange for legislative favors (that is, had accepted bribes), no Republicans asked them to resign.
When Tom DeLay was indicted for money laundering, no Republicans asked him to resign.
But because Larry Craig wiggled his foot under a men's bathroom stall, Pete Hoekstra and Norm Coleman and John McCain have asked him to resign.
Of course if politicians had to declare their sexuality on their campaign reports, I'm sure we'd find just as many gay Republicans as Democrats.
And if they had to declare the abortions they've had or caused, I'm sure we'd find just as many Republicans as Democrats.
Yet somehow the GOP has a "lock" on religious right voters whose top issues are homosexuality and abortion.
Can someone explain to me how Republicans get away with this institutional hypocrisy? Is it simply because religious right leaders like James Dobson, Pat Robertson, and the late Jerry Falwell are/were just Republican stooges?
Update 1: Kos highlights rightwing homophobia in his typical hatemail:
From: chuckrod@xxxx
This is the most lacking website I think I've ever seen. Fuck you is the ass on this one. you people are borderline if not completely retarded. I dare you to reply to my e-mail. you don't have the balls, you people remind me of Hitler's bunch, all talk. I would bet your all a bunch of little faggots circle-jerking each other. Your gaggle of faggots do not represent the fighting soul instilled in real Americans, something you will never be. Move your pathetic ass to Mexico, or Iraq, somewhere that your ideaology fits. 3rd world, hide behind your keyboard, if you walked out in public and said the shit you say in these little coward pages you'd have your ass beat down
Two things immediately stand out: 1) "Hitler's bunch" weren't "all talk". That was sort of the problem with them. They acted. And 2) just about every single one of these hatemails include virulently anti-gay rhetoric, a real hallmark of the O'Reilly Right. For a group that is supposedly "outraged" at the "hate" on Daily Kos, they exhibit a venomous hatred of homosexuality beyond any reason.
In any case, given this guy's ideology, and that of the majority of O'Reilly acolytes who email the site, I would recommend they move to Saudi Arabia. That anti-gay, anti-woman, hyper-conservative theocracy fits their ideology to a "t".
Indeed.

My, oh, My.....
The homophobe conservanazis come down really hard on gays EXCEPT GFY cheney's daughter. The lesbian who had a child out of wedlock. What's up with that? I mean, ain't she living in a relationship that's an abomination, as the 7 commandment christians would say. It's funny how they look the other way when cheney's DAUGHTER IS A LESBIAN, WHO HAD A BASTARD CHILD, yet are so eager to condemn any other GAY conservanazi republikan.
Ah, HYPOCRICY IS A CONSERVANAZI REPUBLIKAN TRAIT!
BUCK FUSH !!!
The Spin Zone
I had a long drive through South Dakota today, and listened to a bunch of talk hosts, both local and national, and representing a fair portion of the political spectrum, address the Larry Craig issue. One voice I happened to stumble upon was Sean Hannity. I guess the Faux News spin machine wasn't getting enough traction with Bill Clinton, so now they've moved on to Barney Frank. Sean started by some premptory throwing-Larry-under-the-bus comments, and then brought up Congressman Frank's alleged indiscretions (from the '90s), including solicitation of male prostitutes, and known prostitutes operating from his Capitol Hill apartment. The clear inference being "why should Frank be giiven a pass and not Craig?" Mind you all of this is old news that was investigated over a decade ago.
The Republicans just don't get why they get punished on this issue time and time again; if you are going to "talk the talk" of family values and moral conservatism, you have to "walk the walk." Americans hate a hypocrite -- especially one who hides behind religon. Unlike those on the far right wing of the Republican Party, neither Barney Frank nor Bill Clinton made any such claims of moral superiority. Furthermore, Barney Frank is very open about his lifestyle, and gets re-elected term-after-term. Larry Craig seems to be either covering up his lifestyle choice, or has been a victim of very bad luck made worse by really poor judgement. Either way, I doubt he will be embraced by the voters of Idaho.
" Can someone explain to me how Republicans get away with this institutional hypocrisy? Is it simply because religious right leaders like James Dobson, Pat Robertson, and the late Jerry Falwell are/were just Republican stooges?"
I'll take a stab at an explanation. When you get beyond the issues of gay marriage, abortion, school prayer, and displaying the 10 Commandments, you start to follow the money. The steadfast Republican support for school vouchers (or it's predecessor, the tuition tax credit) and, to a lesser extent, the so-called federal faith-based initiatives, would, if ever brought to full fruition, transfer billions of dollars of taxpayer money into the hands of religous institutions, and give huge breaks to mostly-white, upper and upper middle class families who don't want their kids going to school with the lower classes (read: minorities). Republican support on these issues, as well as the prospect of vast financial support drives Dobson, and others, like DJ Kennedy, to use their vast media resources (Moody Broadcasting, the 700 Club) and the pulpits of mega chrches to attack Democrats. It's a wonderfully symbiotic relationship that plays well in the South and rural Midwest -- until a Vitter, Craig, Foley, or Haggard come along to spoil the fun.

and plenty of humor/cartoons/etc. If you haven't been to bartcop recently, today's issue is outstanding.

We used to have more humor here, but things have gotten so serious that there is little place for it. Makes bartcop more valuable by giving all of us some humor along with the straight talk.

Haven't you heard
Haven't you heard, some of the right is blaming Karl Rove? Yep, apparently Rove was the one who told them all to run hard on the family values issues. What else do they have going for them if they back off the "family values" issue? Tax cuts, war and more war, lies about gun laws, those just aren't sexy enough on their own to keep the faithful faithful. But if you elect someone who promisses to do God's work and to keep us all safe from terrorists, while saving the "lives" of tiny (invisable, potential, future children) you must be doing the right thing. You can feel good about voting for republicans, because they are on God's side. The more one looks at republicans the more you find the two basic types the greedy and the frightened.
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross." ~ Sinclair Lewis
"I'm just pissed off that not enough other people are pissed off."~Bill Maher
the greedy and the frightened
that sounds exactly right.
the weird thing
about this "evangelical pork" is that Bush hasn't actually delivered that much.
The first head of the "Faith-Based Initiative," John D'Iulio, wanted several billion dollars but Bush only gave him a few hundred million so D'Iulio quit.
And I haven't heard anything about school vouchers for a few years.
So why didn't Bush and Rove "deliver" for their evangelical base?
He didn't have to?
He didn't have to?
Put on the most basic level, since republicans are so very basic, Bush had already gotten what he wanted from them so he didn't have to court them any more? They had already gone way out on a limb for him and there was no real way for them to go to their congregations and say "ooops I/we made a mistake". So they were left with nothing but hope and pocket change.

You're mostly right about "the wierd thing"
Bush hasn't delivered that much to evangelicals... or deficit hawks... or small government Republicans. ..
However, the issue of vouchers is still out there (I included some randomly selected links below). What Bush did do to further this particular cause was to get "No Child Left Behind" passed. Those lovely standardized test scores ultimately become the benchmarks for handing out vouchers, where a state is so inclined.

I listen to enough evangelical radio to get an idea of where their heads are. I can tell you that, after November 2006, there were many who were pretty fed up for not getting any traction on abortion or gay marriage, and were even making some hints they might start seeing if they could find some common ground with Democrats. Then, the Supreme Court ruling on Gonzalez v. Carhart came down, and they finally felt that they were getting results.
But remember, even with 6 years of Republican control of both houses of Congress and the White House, there's no way they could overcome the Liberal Media Culture ;-)
you're right on abortion
they got a ruling that effectively repealed Roe v. Wade.
And they got a 5-4 Supreme Court for the entire rightwing agenda.
