Global Warming Debate: Edwards, Clinton & Kucinich Win

Today may be remembered as a pivotal day in dealing with the increasingly urgent problem of global warming.
In Valencia, Spain, the world's climate scientists are struggling to finalize a consensus report that the world's governments will sign.
"There is real urgency," said Bert Metz from the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, who co-chaired the IPCC working group on options for mitigating climate change.
"We need to peak emissions within 10 years if we are to keep the global temperature rise to 2C. If we leave it for 25 years, we're already committed to 3C."
Handily, [this] IPCC summary also tells you what those temperature rises translate to in terms of impacts.
Two Celsius means about one third of species at risk of extinction, decreased cereal production in the tropics, most coral reefs bleached.
Three Celsius puts millions more people at risk of coastal flooding, decreased cereal production at all latitudes and widespread death of coral reefs.
Coincidentally, today was the League of Conservation Voters/Grist forum on global warming in Los Angeles. All Democratic and Republican candidates were invited - only Clinton, Edwards, and Kucinich showed up.
Here is Devilstower's summary:
Dennis Kucinich is obviously enthusiastic about this topic, and his personal efforts are admirable. However, when pressed on specifics, he wandered off topic and rarely gave any details of how he would implement his broad ideas. A good performance, but I doubt it will pull in anyone who wasn't already a fan.
Hillary Clinton, as she has in many debates, comes off as polished, self-possessed, and competent. That may make her seem a little stiff and cold to some people, but after eight years of Bush, competent seems hugely attractive. Her plan seems solid, and her calls for US leadership in this area were very welcome. However, she often seemed more interested in inserting Al Gore or Barbara Boxer's name into an answer (each of which drew expected applause) than delivering a concise response.
John Edwards hit the ground running -- almost literally. He tore into the subject at a pace that made me breathless just listening to him, and he was more willing than the other candidates to make definitive statements. He hearkened back to Kennedy, and made a call to national sacrifice, but he didn't spend all his time stomping the big emotional notes, and was ready with more information when it came to costs, funding, etc. Edwards also seemed the best informed on the latest UN report.
Todd Beeton also gives the edge to Edwards:
Edwards was in his element at this forum. The audience loves him and he is coming off really well. This forum actually gave him the perfect opportunity to expand on his calls for an end to lobbyist influence and for unequivocal bold leadership -- "no half measures." This forum pretty much crystallized the primary difference between Clinton and Edwards. The choice couldn't be more clear. While Kucinich is in the clouds, Clinton has her feet planted firmly on the ground, Edwards is somewhere in between, in a good way.
Congratulations to Edwards, Clinton, and Kucinich - but where the hell were all the other candidates on the most important issue of the century???

Bob, in answer to your question: Where were all ...
the other candidates on the most important issue of the century?"
The other candidates couldn't find California, more importantly--LA--on their maps. Thats why they weren't there. ;^)
I appreciate your views on the candidates--you really nailed those down. Reading all the transcripts I can find(I don't watch TV), I find that of all the candidates--Hillary is much more politically savvy than the others. She handles attacks, even from her own opposition, with ease and panache. She, alone, appears to be a fighter. A Dem fighter is something not seen amongst our leaders of late.

fighter or deflector?
Hillary is the best at deflecting attacks, but the worst of the Democratic bunch at taking a stand on the issues. When any of the really hot-button questions are asked of her, she instantly starts fish-tailing and refuses to answer directly, always using the excuse that a smart and experienced leader is one who doesn't take a definite stand, saying " ...it's not that easy...we have to be careful..." etc. I can appreciate the need to fully explore and understand an important issue, but I don't feel that's her motivation. I think she just wants to have it both ways, and not ever give a clear or openly honest answer. She 'fights' hard to be vague, but does it with a sharp, clear voice and seemingly strong words, so she appears to be standing up and bravely taking a powerful position. I feel that 'fighting' is the opposite of what she does. She goes backwards into battle. I don't need to see my leader's face; I want the enemy to see it. I want a president who goes after those neocon b*****ds , steps on their necks, and doesn't let 'em up.
"She 'fights' hard to be vague"
LOL.
Priceless observation!
I may use that technique someday ;)
Subterfuge aside, who will we get as President? A Hillary who worries about how the Right will judge her or a "time for pay back" Hillary?
Dunno Jim, seems to me just from reading ...
the transcripts, looks to me as if she handles the other two front-runners pretty easily. She has had some pretty good answers on NAFTA and the rest of the problems. Not definitive answers to be sure--but wouldn't more definitive answers be for the GE ranther than the primary.
She is seldom stumped unlike her opposition. You may not like her answeers, but they are carefully thought out answers. She stands her ground and appears to be able to take on most of the 'pundits' who have traveled roughshod over most Dems over the past 7 years.
I note the lack of criticism here concerning Obama and Edwards. Both have promised the moon(at least that part of it not claimed already by Dennis)and have no clear visions about what to do now. Both have discovered there is an asp in their midst who is not afraid to strike when necessary.
None of the candidates are perfect. What flaws can we live with and which can't we?
She is standing her ground. That seems to be pretty credible at this point. And, she does have answers unlike the other two.
Anyone have a three-sided coin?

The top three ?
Apprently it seems the consensus is that Hillary ,Edwards and Obama are the three top runners for the Democrats running for the office of president in the 2008 election .I do not dislike any of them and all of them would be more then 10 times bettr then the idiot in office we have now .My problem is Iam afraid they may not win against a popular Repug ! Dont ask me why after what the bush administration did to our country and how he took all of ther hard work Presidnet Clinton had accomplished and destroyed it the Americian voter would put a repug back in the White House, one word comes to mind GREED & $$ ! Someone told me that the Dems will have a late comer appear on the sceen that will steal the hearts and minds of the Americian people ,somoeone like President Kennedy ! I often think if JFK Jr. was not killed suddenly and very sadly, how perfect it would be to have him around right now, a shoe in to win the Presendency at a time when our country needs him. I said it before and I will say it again ,I will vote for which ever Dem is chosen ,however my opinion on the three top runners are that Obama comes off as to young and would lose if chosen ,Hillary for some reason has a group of people that have a deep seated hattred for her ,why I really dont understand ,here is a women who did the right thing for her family when many would have walked away ,showing just how important family values are to her ,she has always carried herself with her head held up high ,and always acted like a lady ,yet the repugs go around calling this eight year former first lady the B word ,if anyone should knows what its truely like to act like a Christion it was Hillary .Edwards ,here is a man with alot of $ ,yet what seems important to him is educating our children correctly ,helping the less fortunate and helping the middle class survive. The truth of the matter is they are all good people and all deserving of this office they seek ,yet I have a sick feeling in my gut that the repugs with their dirty tricks and focusing on the digging up of dirt on their opponents instead of discussing the issuses ,that they will once again trick the voting American public into electing one of their corrupt politicians into office to carry on a war for $ and oil and even expand it ,continue to eliminate the middle class ,and continue to pollute our planet till we cause our own demise ! I pray daily that a Dem hero comes along ,or perhaps one of the top three is already that hero .I believe as Dems we should support them all ,becasue in the end the most important thing is getting the repugs out of the White House !
IMHO ,Sincerely Nick
