Let's Hold "Dr." Frist Accountable for Playing Politics with Terry Schiavo's Life

Remember how Bill Frist lied about Terry Schiavo's persistent vegetative state? According to RawStory.com, the Tennessee Medical Board is currently reviewing complaints against Frist. If you were outraged by Frist's conduct, consider writing a letter like this one, sent to us by Dr. Jeff Wade of California. Dr. Frist is licensed in both TN and DC.

Board of Medical Examiners:

As a physician, I was deeply dismayed recently upon seeing the actions of Dr. William Frist. Dr. Frist is on public record as giving an apparent diagnosis and prognosis on Mrs. Terry Schiavo during the nationwide debate and political jockeying that surrounded her death.

As he said, this was based only on a review of a videotape of her, not on a good faith history and physical. It is both a field of medicine other than that in which he is trained and she lived in Florida, a state where he is not licensed to practice medicine.

While he was not truly a treating physician for her, he represented himself as a physician and gave what an ordinary lay person might assume was a medical opinion based on all the facts available in the case.

As a result of his intervention, the case was protracted, leading to increased mental and emotional harm to her family.

Due to his failure to adequately evaluate her, he was proven wrong after her autopsy. At this point he compounded the problem by emphatically denying the substance of his earlier, televised statement on her medical condition, again on national television. This is tantamount to being caught in a blatant lie and such behavior lessens the esteem in which our profession is seen by the public.

Such behavior is unprofessional and violates the standards and practices of our profession. It makes it seem as if he is using his medical degree to further political goals while disregarding the  ethics of the profession. As the nation's most visible physician, he should be held to an even higher standard of conduct, as his behavior reflects on all physicians.

Thank You,

Jeff Wade MD

Didn't "Dr." Frist also

Didn't "Dr." Frist also state on national televison that AIDS could be spread by tears and sweat? No doubt Dubya would like to reward him with a Freedom Medal for such astute observations.

Frist & AIDS

Yes, he did say that. While it is theoretically possible, it has NEVER been proven.

Welcome to Democrats.com Dr.

Welcome to Democrats.com Dr. Wade, and thank you for caring.

Thank you, Dr. Wade

and welcome to our blog. We need doctors like you and Cleo to help dispel
the many myths there are concerning AIDs and HIV.

Karin.

PS- I'm also from So. California, about 30 miles south of Torrance.

Welcome to democrats.com

Welcome to democrats.com Dr. Wade and thank you for bringing this to the attention of both the DC and Tenn. Medical Boards.

After seeing Dr. Frist on the floor of the Senate giving his diagnosis of Shiavo from a video tape I was shocked at his arrogance and the obvious way that he let his oath as a physician be used to make political points with his base.

Medicine and politics don't mix, Dr. Frist, pick one and which ever one it is try to be better at it.

Proud member of the reality based community.

Dr. Frist

The worse thing about Dr. Senator Frist's actions is that his statements are misleading to the general population which accepts his opinion as true because he is a well-respected physician. I think that he committed national malpractice by his Terri Schiavo statements. His actions were worse than those of the "professional expert witnesses" in a malpractice case because first of all he didn't even pretend do any case study other than watching the video and second he denied his statements when he was proven wrong by the autopsy. It is just fortunate for him that no one was killed or injured physically during this affair. When you are a physician and are claiming to be an expert based on your medical degree, you have a responsibility to the general population not to disseminate falsehoods. Dr. Frist's quest for power in this case ignoring all of the testimony of real practicing physicians who had examined Terri Schiavo make his actions even more reprehensible. We physicians have a responsibility to educate and inform the public not to grandstand. Senator Frist should stick to comments about politics from now on and leave medicine to those who practice it. I am writing a letter to the medical board in Tennessee. It will be interesting to see the response. I am sure that this will be a first for them as it would be for most states. However, I think that Senator Frist's actions do harm to our profession. Most of us have worked too long and too hard to see him politicize reality.

Thanks Dr. Cleo. It is

Thanks Dr. Cleo. It is people like you who give us hope.

He is a Republican

He is a Republican! Republican will never change but I can change Cleo's script to meet other Republican scandals.

The worse thing about George Bush’s actions is that his statements are misleading to the general population which accepts his opinion as true because he is a well-respected world leader. I think that he committed national malpractice by his Saddam tied to Al Qaeda statements. His actions were worse than those of the "professional expert witnesses" in a this case because first of all he didn't even pretend do any case study and second he denied his statements when he was proven wrong by then he changed the story. It is just unfortunate for him that people were killed and injured physically during this affair. When you are a President and are claiming to be an expert based on your intelligence community, you have a responsibility to the general population not to disseminate falsehoods. George Bush’s quest for power in this case ignoring all of the testimony of real practicing intelligence officers who had examined Saddams weapons make his actions even more reprehensible. The President should have a responsibility to educate and inform the public not to grandstand. George Bush should stick to comments about NOT invading other countries from now on and leave the “intelligence”to those who practice it. I am writing a letter to the democrats board in the internet. It will be interesting to see the response. However, I think that President Bush’s actions do harm to our country. Most of us have worked too long and too hard to see him politicize reality.

Sorry, I just read that post and I immediately related George Bush to it!

"They want the federal government controlling Social Security

like it's some kind of federal program."

- George W. Bush in a debate in St. Charles, Mo., Nov. 2, 2000

That is impressive and frightening

How come you can see the pattern of the lies and the truth that is being concealed while our so called investigative reporters only care about investigating and regurgitating the same news over and over again about Michael Jackson and Natalie and Lacy and Shasta? Don't get me wrong, I can only imagine the pain that the relatives feel over the loss of their loved ones and wonder at the strangeness of Neverland, but this is not the news that we need now.I watched a powerpoint that my sixteen year old nephew made about current affairs. He sees the real news and truth and is not distracted by the smokescreens and sad dramas of human life. What has happened here? It goes beyond Dr. Senator Frist or whatever we call him and his recreation of truth to serve his master. Lies and deception are everywhere. Why don't we get an answer to our petition about Downing Street? Why do we have to look like the most arrogant and stupid country in the world when we go to Scotland and insist that we can't let the state of the planet destroy our economy. What will an economy be when the oceans start overtaking the land and the horrors begin? Everyone in the Bush Administration is so worried about the here and now and the value of their assets that they give no thought to the future of the planet and the people who live here. How did we go so far off course? If we don't do something soon to reset our course, we will be lost in a world without our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of any happiness. We need to have our votes counted, our social security system kept intact, and refind our place in the community of world nations. The implosion of the WTC's will be nothing compared to the implosion of our country.

I just received a letter from the TN medical board.

They sent me a letter similar to the one mentioned on rawstory.com above. The investigation is initiated. I'll let you know as I hear more.

Jeff Wade MD

DC just refused to investigate

I just received a letter stating they won't be investigating due to Frist's constitutional immunity as a Senator from legal liability for his actions on the Senate floor. I'm sure this still will get passed on to him and hopefully rattle him a little. It might even make him think twice before prostituting his medical degree for political gain in the future. Mine was the second complaint so far to the DC board. These should also be on public record as medical board complaints to be used against him later, if need be.

Still awaiting a decision from the TN board, but the fact that they didn't refuse to investigate due to constitutional immunity might be a good sign. They may either not know about the immunity clause or not consider it germane. We'll see...

Jeff Wade MD

Now I'm no lawyer or doctor,

Now I'm no lawyer or doctor, but isn't he fair game once he's out of office?

If I'm not mistaken, Clinton

If I'm not mistaken, Clinton was disbarred for a period of time after he left office.

Small potatos compared to

Small potatos compared to how many nights he slept on the couch afterward.

about "Soverign Immunity"

I am familiar with the legal principles of the actions you write of. Have done this and it is not simple nor impossible. And one of the reasons for for the statute to apply is in areas of "deception or deceptive activities". If I had this smooth faced con man on the stand for 15 min. I'd have him takin' the 5th. I'm no lawyer, but I'll tell him how to do it. Is there a doctor/ lawyer in the house????

TN turned it down as well...

However this complaint will be in the files of both medical boards and a search with them will show that complaints were filed. This will be potentially helpful to tarnish him a little if needed during an upcoming election.

I'd also like to think this rattled Frist & may help prevent him from prostituting his degree for political ends in the future. For all I know, this factored into his decision to oppose Bush on stem cells...

Jeff Wade MD

Thanks for the update Dr.

Thanks for the update Dr. Wade, and for your efforts to alert the public to this quack's actions.
