FRIDAY: House Vote on Warrantless Wiretapping
Please pick up your phone again and call your Representative right now to demand a NO vote on warrantless wiretapping. The vote will be Friday around noon, but please call no matter what time you get this. (The Congressional switchboard is open 24x7x365 and each office has voicemail.) Steny Hoyer's warrantless wiretapping bill is obscene because it gives complete immunity to the telcos that have spied on us illegally since 2001, as well as the Bush Administration officials who illegally asked them to break the law. And it lets them continue spying on us by creating Big Brother with a figleaf of meaningless "protections." On May 14, Democrats defeated a similar immunity bill 213-197. There is absolutely no reason for any Democrat to change his or her vote now except corrupt greed for telco campaign cash.
So call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for your House Representative (not Senators) by name, or find your House Representative's name and direct dial by entering your address on the right side:
After you call, share your Representative's response with your neighbors by logging in to Democrats.com. Immunity for Telcoms who spied on U S citizens
DO NOT vote to give immunity to these companies. They broke the law, FISA allowed for tapping a phone - without judicial authority- in the event of national security so there was no need for them to do this. The administration and the Telephone companies betrayed our trust! If I were to rob a bank, steal millions, get caught have Congress give me immunity? NO!
Keep faith with the people who elected you... Don't vote the party line. Wally, you know this was wrong, it violated the constitution, and it betrayed the constituents who voted for you,and have voted for you for years. Protect us! Keep your word to represent us! Do not vote to support these lawbreakers.

I just completed a call to Rep. John Dingel. Unfortunately I had to leave a message. Living in Dearborn, MI., we have known about wiretapping since just after Sept. 11, 2001. My neighbors and I have had regular discussions about this very subject. My hope is that Congressman Dingel will receive this message.

I also just completed a call to Rep. Courtney. However I was only able to talk to a staff operator. I tried to query her on how Rep. Courtney is going to vote on this bill but I guess that info is not available until after the vote. However after expressing my disatisfaction with this bill and hoping that Rep. Courtney will vote no, the staff operator did ask for my name and address. I am sure Rep. Courtney will get my message and I have every confidence that he will vote no.
More Discouraging News
My congressman, Peter Welch of Vermont, voted yesterday against this latest attempt by the White House to extort another "supplemental" for it's illegal and immoral war. I've called his D.C. office to thank him for that vote and, when I asked that he refuse to support this FISA capitulation of Hoyer's, I was told that he WILL NOT vote in favor of telecom immunity, retroactive or otherwise. It's a little frustrating that the voting records of my state's Congressional delegation are almost perfectly aligned with my policy preferences, yet other turn-coat Dems manage to make their votes virtually meaningless. Welch did support Hoyer for Majority Leader, though I wonder if he regrets that fact now. I'll be anxiously awaiting the results of today's vote. I am not, however, hopeful.
