Feingold Ignores Fascism and Kisses Presidential Hopes GoodbyeSenator Russ Feingold made headlines in August when he became the first 2008 hopeful to call for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of 2006. This won raves from progressive pundits like my friend John Nichols and even a highly-coveted appearance on Meet the Press. And it generated enough buzz in the progressive blogosphere to move Feingold into 2nd place in the dKos Straw Poll (behind Wes Clark and ahead of John Edwards, Hillary Clinton, and No Freakin' Clue). But today, Feingold threw it all away.
Impeccable legal credentials - like being a leader of the Federalist Society - and lying about it? Reputation and record as a fair-minded person - like helping George Bush steal the 2000 election in Florida? In early 2001, Russ Feingold provided the deciding vote on the Senate Judiciary Committee to confirm John Ashcroft as Attorney General, despite massive opposition from netroots Democrats. Why did Feingold support Ashcroft? Because Ashcroft gave him a ride home from the Capitol one day, and because he promised to nominate Ronnie White for the next Federal judgeship - a promise Ashcroft broke immediately. I blasted Feingold relentlessly at the time for his vote. Perhaps out of remorse, Feingold was the only Senator to vote against the USA Patriot Act immediately after 9/11. Five years later, I was prepared to give him a second look because of his Patriot Act vote and his semi-courageous stance on Iraq. But not now. When he cast his deciding vote for Ashcroft, Feingold said "maybe I'm naive." Five years later, nothing has changed. Feingold's vote for Roberts proves his naivete is his fatal incurable character flaw - just like Bush's greed, cowardice, and stupidity. Senator Feingold, you worse than naive - you are a suicidal idiot. Right in front of your eyes the Federalist Society - led by John Aschroft, John Roberts, and their "modest" cronies - is turning the American judicial system into an instrument of Republican Fascism. Don't you remember how they conspired to appoint Ken Starr as Special Prosecutor for Clinton, and then set a perjury trap for him? Didn't you read Bush v. Gore, which legalized the theft of the Presidency? Haven't you read the Torture Memos? Didn't you read the 4th Circuit's latest ruling in Padilla v. Rumsfeld, which gave the President the unlimited powers of a dictator? These are all the products of the Federalist Society, and they are systematic steps towards fascism. When the Busheviks fire up the concentration camp ovens, the Niemoller of our time will write: "First they came for the enemy combatants, but I was not an enemy combatant." And when they come for the Jews - because Fascists always come for the Jews - there will be no one left to speak up for you. Update: John Nichols called it a most disappointing vote for progressives. But he is at a loss to explain why Feingold cast it.
Update: My statement was quoted by Tom Curry of MSNBC.

Bravo Bob
we have to hold these people accountable and make them feel the pain if they ignore us.

The traitors to American women & democracy
Feingold, Leahey and Kohl are traitors to American women. They have no chance of re-election.
Did their lunch with the President give them a larger off-shore bank account? Or did the President threaten them?
We should demand their (politicans who turn on their country) financial accounts be followed after they leave office. Reagan got millions from the Japanese, etc. after he left office. It was payoff...no doubt about it. Clinton got three million for his book..Hillary more. Give me a break are they money laundering through publishers?
Any person going into public service should not become rich or there is something going on there. We should demand accountability or this corruption will continue.
I think there is a big
I think there is a big difference between selling books and getting rich from giving speeches around the world as Bill Clinton is doing along with a great deal of humanitarian work and joining Carlyle Group and using the inside information gleaned from your presidency and your influence as expresident to make billions for your friends and family.

suicidal idiot
Having been a Democrat all my life, after reading the blog and comments, the term "suicidal idiot" does come to mind, just not with respect to Senator Feingold. Just how is Senator Eeingold going to be made to "feel the pain"? Would you rather have a Republican in his place?
ALERT REALITY-BASED COMMUNITY--intruder in the midst.
He loses our money,
He loses our money, volunteers, votes, and good press.
I do not want to argue over Feingold at this time because I am digesting all that is happening, but broadly speaking it is incorrect strategy to be timid for two reasons: First, the electorate gains some of its bias FROM leaders. Secondly, there are Right Wing Ideologies that Democrats have absorbed via osmosis that are demonstrably false. They are not simply opinions, they are falsehoods.
Fiengold suicide
Whatever happened to the Democrats? Am I the only one left?
These are my sentiments exactly. What the heck could these turncoat Democrats be thinking. Maybe John Roberts is worthy of his support, but with all the stonewalling there is no way to know for sure. You can't trust someone who answers every question with "Just trust me."
This is suicide
I'm frothing at the mouth with anger. As a constituent of his (and Senator Kohl's), they're getting letters from me. And they'll be dragged through my blog exposing the hypocrisy. I was ready to throw my support behind Fiengold for a run for the "big job" in 08. He's lost it now. Truly dissapointing. The only one bright enough to vote against the Patriot Act now violates us all with a vote that will lead to far more influence over the future of this nation then the Nazi Act ever will.
This is just becoming
This is just becoming hopeless... The democratic party is hopeless...
And our hopelessness is exactly what repugs hope for in order for their next stolen elections to be readily justified and explainable by msm.
What to do?
Thanks Bob for posting this, but our votes don't count, Democratic party's been infiltrated, Leahy, Feingold, etc.. make no difference, media's been bought and paid for.. Voting is rigged, financial markets and statistics are rigged (Rita's coming, DOW is UP, UP!), everything is a lie..
What to do?
Hope that the whole house of cards comes crashing down under ill winds of not a blessing but category 5 angry God? Yeah and then what? And who suffers and pays for the crash? Look at NOLA... Poor, blacks...
What to do?
I'm not being facetious here, I'm not trying so drive some point, I'm just so... tired, disgusted, angry, tired of being angry and disgusted... Hopeless really, I am very sorry to admit.
Some will argue that the bush junta is imploding... So.. "just hang on a bit longer"... Yeah, but the damage's been done, it'll take generations to fix... Roberts and other legacies are there for a long time...
This is another sad day.
I haven't given up but, since 12/12/2000, lately I sometimes become so weary. What's one to do? Haven't we tried it all already? Protests, activism... (I am in no way knocking it down, I was there) But I feel betrayed, alone... Betrayed by my party, betrayed by my country, by its institutions... Never by most of my protest or online friends (democrats.com, buzz, trouthout, online, etc..) but...
What's one to do?
I hear ya
I hear you on your weariness. I feel our Democratic Party has been hijacked by want-to-be Repukicans. I joined the Green Party just to get outside the whole mess and look at it more objectively.
I don't know how as of yet, but I sense the People of this country are going to have had enough very soon. We can't count on our elected politicians to help us. We are alone. Alone with each other. Something is evolving in this country. I think we're going through what Chinese Medicine calls "Meinken". It means "healing crisis". When there is a healing crisis, things get worse before they get better. Everything bad starts bubbling to the surface making it seem hopeless. But its coming to the surface to be cleaned out so the system can be made more clean.
That's how I keep going anyway. Believing in that. I've got to.
Reward and Punishment
Reward good behavior. Feingold needs a lesson- I will not support him for president.
This is truly disappointing.
This is truly disappointing. I contributed to his 2004 Senate race based upon his sole opposition of the Patriot Act in the Senate even though I do not live in Wisconsin. I thought he was one of the good guys.
I do not know what these Senate democrats are thinking. They should have filibustered Roberts. Bush is a bully. If these Senate democrats think they have accomplished anything by accomodating Bush, they are wrong. It will only encourage Bush to nominate an even more extreme right Republican as O'Connor's replacement. Bush may be so emboldened to not bother using a stealth extremist next time.
We need to be real
Hi. I'm a liberal democrat like yourselves, but I must say a lot of this talk is making me wonder if all the cable tv and air america is getting to us.
Russ Feingold (and Kohl) can and will get re-elected. I lived in Wisconsin with these two as my senators for 10 years. The thing you have to know about him is that he is his own man. He doesn't vote based on what is the best political move or what can score him some re-election points, but he shares virtually all our values. That is why he would make a good President.
The media and Republicans have sold us on the idea that every vote needs to be turned upside down and analyzed, if any imperfection is found we must throw this person to the swift boats.
No one should support him just because he voted against the Patriot act.
No one should reject him just because he voted to confirm John Roberts.
I know we're well aware of his philosphy on judicial appointments, but is refusing to be a partisan hack really a limitng factor with who we can support for President?
Those of us saying things like suicide and fillibuster really need to take a step back and look at the reality of the situation. You may call it being a turncoat, but I call it valueing intelligence and reason over politics and emotion.
A final note: Feingold has one of the lowest incomes of any Senator. He does not benefit financially at all from being in politics, nor does he own a basketball team.
That is one way of looking
That is one way of looking at it.
Another might be that we lost all three branches of government, and America will not see Republicans to be incompetent and wholly fixated on greed if Democrats do not see it and expose it. Will the Robert’s folks apologize to us if he behaves badly? Will they stomp their feet if he does not live up to the nebulosity he espoused as “answers” to questions? If so, it will be too late will it not?
Finally, I hear your plea, and Democratic leaders who do not hear ours may not get our support.

Feingold is a traitor to the
Feingold is a traitor to the very few real Democrats we have left in Congress, and does not deserve our support. He has joined the ranks of the DLC Republican-lite.
While your portrayal of Feingold makes him sound "noble," the reality of the situation is that unless we Democrats stand united, we are doomed. He, and the other back-stabbing DLC-ers in our ranks must be replaced -- and soon. And that's as "real" as it gets.
I am inclined to be
on the side of those who thinks that Feingold committed "suicide" with his vote for Roberts. Does anyone have a clue as to why Leahy and Feingold soldout? Unless Feingold or Leahy lead the charge against another idealogue to replace O'Connor, or if Roberts turn out to be a moderate, both Feingold and Leahy can be considered flatout turncoats.
