Fear Is All Republicans HavePolitico's top Republicans, Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen, tried to come up with a plan to save the Republican Party - and basically came up empty.
They had 12 years under Newt Gingrich and George Bush to come up with brilliant policies that worked - and every policy they proposed was a disaster. What's going to change now?
"Vino" Fossella is running again, despite howls from fellow Republicans. Larry Craig is still in the Senate, along with the unmentioned David Vitter. If Republicans can't get rid of guys like this, who will they get rid of?
The Heritage Foundation and AEI are already as fortified as think tanks can get. Activist groups are different - you need dedicated activists, not a-holes, and all the good activists are progressives. Morton Blackwell's infamous Leadership Institute has trained tens of thousands of conservative activists, but he trained them in thuggery.
Good luck with that - after goosestepping behind Bush for 7.5 years, no one is going to take them seriously if they claim to "cut him loose."
Good idea! Why not run Condi for Veep and watch McCain-Rice lose 50 states :)
At last - when push comes to shove, the only card Republicans have to play is fear. A party whose only reason for existence is to "fan the fear" is a party that belongs on the ashheap of history.

Reps. attack on Michelle Obama
Republicans I feel, need to be very careful not to go after Mrs. Obama. Especially in light of the fact that the same attacks can be directed towards McCains wife. The fact is that, for those that see themselves as Christian in this country both she and McCain are adulterers. Just how did that relationship come about in the first place? McCain needs to tread lightly in all areas really because, while he sees himslef as a maverick, does that include how he met his current wife?
There is plenty to say if
There is plenty to say if McCain wants to open that old, not very pleasant story of his first wife and how he met Cindy. Actually the story has all the elements of a cheep novel. Handsome young navel officer shot down over Viet Nam, tortured by his captors. Spent several years in a North Viet Nam prison where he was continuously tortured leaving him, to this day, with badly damaged shoulder joints. Comes home to find that his lovely [model] wife has been severely injured in a car accident. She is now on crutches and carrying more weight than when she was a beauty queen. She didn't want him to know of her injuries while he was imprisoned so she toughed it out by herself, to spare him. He pulls some strings to get into the National War College at Fort McNair and goes back to being the play boy that he always was, building his career on the reputations of his father and grandfather and soon meets Cindy at a reception in Hawaii and the rest is on the net if you are interested.
McCain has little room to talk
Cliff Schecter has a book, out now in paper back, called The Real McCain that tells a lot about McCain's friends and how he got where he is today. He is no choir boy that is for sure.
As far as his "maverick" reputation my gut tells me he is more of an arrogant, over privileged, mentally and morally challenged/confused guy with delusions of grandeur, who is the last ditch hope for a very tattered republican party. If he didn't have his hero war story (which I do not mean to disparage) he would have nothing to recommend him for the presidenty. The republicans might have offered the job to Tom Cruise. [I know, but think about it].

you're exactly right
i don't know how John met Cindy, but everyone knows he dumped his crippled first wife to marry Cindy.
this talk of Obama not appealing to uneducated, working class whi
I'm amazed this evening about the whole take on this evenings Oregon/Kentucky race. Pundits say that 1/3 of Kentucky proudly say they will vote for McCain rather than Obama because of his race. Yet, these same Kentuckians say they go to church every week and they don't care for Obamas elitist intellect. to me if they are the alleged Christians they claim, his race shouldn't matter. But this says to me that they have a problem with their feelings of inferiority as well as sayiing to me that if Jesus were on the ballot they'd not vote for him either because he was an intellectual. So perhaps those in Kentucky should think about that the next tiime they go to church.
