Therefore we've created our Procession for the Future parade, consisting of over 20 giant puppets, icons and colorful banners. The Procession stands out and communicates that We the People are taking the lead, that progressive solutions are attainable for a beautiful future, and that being part of the movement is loads of fun! We can't always directly attack the nerve center of shocking government actions, but here in Chicago we have a chance to make a statement on the torture issue by joining in the brief demonstration against Boeing's complicity in torture flights.

Time: 9 A.M., Monday, 27 April 2009.

Place: Sidewalk on north side of McFetridge Drive, along back (south) entrance to Field Museum.

Occasion: Annual shareholders' meeting of Boeing Company.

We are planning a peaceful picket and distribution of flyers to arriving Boeing shareholders, on a public sidewalk, where no permit is required.

It is important for us to have a significant presence both to make our point about Boeing/Jeppesen involvement in torture flights and to assert our First Amendment rights of peaceable assembly in public space.

We will disband when the shareholder meeting begins, not long after 10 AM. So, this is not a big investment of time to make some important statements of our principles.

Many of you have participated in Witness Against Torture Actions in the
past...many of us have spent time together during these 100 days.
Can we come together once again in dramatic fashion, on behalf of those
men who remain in prison? Will you join us?

It's simple really....
the men in Guantanamo know we are acting in solidarity with them

The Obama administration needs to know that situation at Guantanamo
today remains as unacceptable as it was on Jan. 20th.

Witness Against Torture (WAT) is looking for some folks who are willing
to risk arrest in DC on April 30th in an action to call attention to the
plight of the 60 men at Guantanamo who have been cleared for release but
still languish there.

The proposed scenario goes something like this:

  • 10am: Gather at the Capital Reflecting Pool
  • 10:15 – 11am: Speakers from Amnesty, WAT, & others

Start: 10:15

ANTI-TORTURE ACTIVISTS TO RALLY, COMMIT CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE AT THE WHITE HOUSE, THURSDAY, APRIL 30 | Press Release

Demand Prosecution of U.S. Torture and Release of Innocent Detainees

On April 30th, hundreds of human rights activists will gather near the White House to call on the Obama administration to support a criminal inquiry into torture under the Bush administration and to fully break with past detention policies.

At a rally at Lafayette Park at 11:15 am, members of Witness Against Torture, Amnesty International, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Torture Abolition Survivors Support Coalition will speak out about the need for accountability and an end to Bush-era policies. At noon, sixty activists from Witness Against Torture — each representing one of the Guantanamo inmates cleared for release but still imprisoned – will risk arrest.

Stand up for Peace in the Middle East and Against the Pro-War Policies of AIPAC!

On May 3-5, the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) will hold its annual convention in Washington DC to rally its supporters to
push the U.S. government to support the Israeli government without conditions. AIPAC is advocating an aggressive approach to Iran;
supporting Israel's continuing to siege on Gaza and its refusal to cooperate with a UN investigation into violations of international law;
and backing the Israeli government’s refusal to engage in substantive peace negotiations with the elected Palestinian leaders.

It's time to expose AIPAC’s pro-war stance and take a stand in favor of human rights and international law. Join CODEPINK and other groups in DC May 2-5 in a variety of activities planned throughout the convention. E-mail for more information.

Join us in Philly on Saturday, May 2nd, 2009. Activists from around the east coast are converging on the “Army Experience Center” (AEC), a 14,000 square foot atrocity built by the Department of Defense at a cost to taxpayers of $12 million.

The AEC gives kids as young as 13 a chance to play extremely violent video games, as well as sit inside real Apache helicopters, tanks & humvees mounted with M-16 assault rifles. The youth are enticed to jump on board and kill the “hadjis”. Right next door is the largest indoor skateboarding park which attracts local youth. Kids can be seen going from having fun skateboarding to playing bloody “war games” sanctioned by the US Army.

Start: 14:00

Shut Down the Army Experience Center at Franklin Mills Mall
By Pat Elder

Killing is fun -- and life is cheap at the Army Experience Center at the Franklin Mills Mall in suburban Philadelphia.

"This is so cool!" This is so cool!" The enthralled 13 year-old kept repeating as he squeezed rounds from his M-16, picking off "enemy combatants" while perched on a real Army Humvee.

We're in the new Army Experience Center in suburban Philadelphia and the young teen, who doesn't look older than eleven, was obviously impressed with the Army's killing machines. "I just came to the mall to skateboard in the skate park across the hall but everyone said this was pretty cool. I just had to try it and its great!"

A Powerful Model for Public Action

A large-scale 'Bail-out working people - Not the Banks' teach-in' and mass mobilization planning meeting' scheduled for San Francisco May 9 is a hopeful harbinger of things to come.. This teach-in is heavily supported by organized labor and may well serve as a model for teach-ins in other areas. Such teach-ins can help to usher in a new era of greatly intensified grass-roots struggle against the power of finance capital in the U.S. and other countries with their anti-labor and anti-people policies.

Teach-ins first appeared in the U.S. in the 1960's, when they played a major role in mobilizing mass resistance to the Vietnam War. A 'teach-in' involves peaches - and close interaction with the audience - by academic and social organizers seeking to inform students and the public about social or political matters which have reached the level of acute crisis.

Start: 13:00

Bail Out Working People - NOT the Banks!
Join us on May 9 in San Francisco for a
TEACH-IN & MASS MOBILIZATION PLANNING MEETING

Learn about what is happening in the labor movement and in our communities to fight for the interests of working people.
Help organize a mass mobilization around our demands, including:

  • Massive job-creation program.
  • Single-payer healthcare for all.
  • Moratorium on home foreclosures and evictions.
  • Pass the Employee Free Choice Act.
  • Tax the rich - don't bail out the banks.
  • Money for jobs and social services, not for war

Speakers to be announced.

The bankers have organized themselves and vigorously lobbied for bailouts. We, working people, need to organize ourselves to demand policies in the interest of working people as whole.

The government should defend our interests, not the interests of the rich. After all, we are the majority, and we had no part in creating this crisis.
