What is Capitalism Anyway, and Where did it Come From? As the global capitalist system plunges into its worst crisis since the Great Depression, take some time out to hear this primer on how capitalism got going in the first place. Drawing on a body of recent scholarship which seeks to trace the specific historical path by which capitalism developed out of the middle ages, D.C. resident Mike Zmolek will discuss the findings of his recently completed doctoral dissertation—15 years in the making—titled “Rethinking the Industrial Revolution.” The conclusions may surprise you, and capitalism’s early crises might seem only too familiar. Please RSVP to Mike. Start: 19:00

Bail Our Troops Out of Iraq & Afghanistan/Accountability NOW WHAT: Veterans, Military Families and concerned citizens will deliver United States, Afghanistan and Iraqi flagged draped coffins and hold a memorial service outside Congressman Henry Waxman’s Los Angeles office. WHY: As concerned citizens, we oppose military escalation in Afghanistan and support non-military solutions to the conflict. We are intent on disrupting the notion that a 'consensus' exists on the escalation in Afghanistan. We want our representatives to oppose this escalation by signing onto the bipartisan letter drafted by Rep. Walter Jones (NC-R). (See Letter Below) Start: 15:00
Join us at the International House starting at 3 PM. In a post to the Contra Costa Times over the weekend, UC Berkeley's School of Law Dean, Christopher Edley confirmed his determination to shield "Torture Professor" John Yoo from accountability for well documented crimes against humanity. Edley's misapplication of an "academic freedom" defense not only enables UC to continue harboring a known war criminal against community wishes, but calls into question the Dean's motivation for protecting John Yoo. Faculty, student and alumni calls for disciplinary actions are not based on what Yoo said, they are based on what he did. UC Berkeley's code of conduct provides for dismissal pursuant to criminal conviction. Yet according to law professor Christopher Kutz, "disbarment proceedings and 'serious professional ethical violations,' such as knowingly giving bad advice, could also lead to Yoo's firing." Boalt has a duty to assess John Yoo's actions no matter how uncomfortable those findings may be. This Friday, April 10, FIRE JOHN YOO and WORLD CAN'T WAIT will confront UC recalcitrance to do the right thing. | ||

Agenda for a New Economy Video and Discussion - Mon Apr 13, 7:30 pm David Korten discusses how pouring money back into the "phantom wealth" of Wall Street will not heal all our economic woes. The "new economy" he envisions is locally based, community oriented, and devoted to a better life for all - not simply increasing the profits of the rich. It is a compelling agenda for our time, as we question how we should change the direction of our country. After the video we'll focus on our varied and personal responses as progressives and ethical persons living in the midst of changes which are affecting many of us directly and certainly our world society as a whole. Korten's two prior books are considered classics for sustainable economics: "The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community" published in 2006 and "When Corporations Rule the World" in 2001.
