We first launched the Procession on March 4th (March Forth!), 2008 in Portland, Oregon.
Our Spring Break
We are seeking students to come to DC for their spring break and help end the illegal occupation, and related injustices. We will have a presence in DC from March 8th-March 22nd.
The week of the 8th through the 14th will be focused on the issue of torture and youth will be working with Witness Against Torture and their 100 Days Campaign.
The following week will focus on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with March 19th being the anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.
Iraq War 6th Year Memorials Planned in Oklahoma City
The March 19, six-year anniversary of the start of the U.S. war in Iraq will be commemorated in Oklahoma City with memorial events, public vigils, and a silent memorial walk, according to planners. Peace House Director Nathaniel Batchelder said that the tone of events planned this year is more to seek higher wisdom to make the world less violent and more humane, and less to tell Washington, D.C., what to do.
In a statement sent to The City Sentinel, Batchelder said, “We are hopeful that a new administration and Congress can resolve the Middle East conflicts with more diplomacy and less violence.”

The Obama Administration and Congress will deliver some of changes that we and the world need, but powerful grassroots pressure on the new Administration and Congress will be required if our hopes for change are to be realized.
To provide clear and profound visions, campaigns, and movements for change, the American Friends Service Committee, Tufts University's Peace and Justice Studies Program, and a growing number of co-sponsoring organizations have organized "New Strategies for the Obama Era: Are You Ready?"
This New England-wide, multi-generational movement conference will be held the weekend of March 27-29. "New Strategies" will provide strategies, information, analysis, campaigns, resources and networking essential to build the movements needed to impact and lead Washington. As the slogan has it, When the people lead, the leaders will follow.

Who: A discussion by Mike Zmolek, PhD
When: April 9th, 2009, from 6:30-8:00 pm
Where: In the Cullen Room at the NEW 5th & K location of Busboys & Poets
As the global capitalist system plunges into its worst crisis since the Great Depression, take some time out to hear this primer on how capitalism got going in the first place. Drawing on a body of recent scholarship which seeks to trace the specific historical path by which capitalism developed out of the middle ages, D.C. resident Mike Zmolek will discuss the findings of his recently completed doctoral dissertation—15 years in the making—titled “Rethinking the Industrial Revolution.” The conclusions may surprise you, and capitalism’s early crises might seem only too familiar.
Please RSVP to Mike.

Bail Our Troops Out of Iraq & Afghanistan/Accountability NOW
WHAT: Veterans, Military Families and concerned citizens will deliver United States, Afghanistan and Iraqi flagged draped coffins and hold a memorial service outside Congressman Henry Waxman’s Los Angeles office.
WHY: As concerned citizens, we oppose military escalation in Afghanistan and support non-military solutions to the conflict. We are intent on disrupting the notion that a 'consensus' exists on the escalation in Afghanistan. We want our representatives to oppose this escalation by signing onto the bipartisan letter drafted by Rep. Walter Jones (NC-R). (See Letter Below)

Join us at the International House starting at 3 PM.
In a post to the Contra Costa Times over the weekend, UC Berkeley's School of Law Dean, Christopher Edley confirmed his determination to shield "Torture Professor" John Yoo from accountability for well documented crimes against humanity. Edley's misapplication of an "academic freedom" defense not only enables UC to continue harboring a known war criminal against community wishes, but calls into question the Dean's motivation for protecting John Yoo.
Faculty, student and alumni calls for disciplinary actions are not based on what Yoo said, they are based on what he did. UC Berkeley's code of conduct provides for dismissal pursuant to criminal conviction. Yet according to law professor Christopher Kutz, "disbarment proceedings and 'serious professional ethical violations,' such as knowingly giving bad advice, could also lead to Yoo's firing." Boalt has a duty to assess John Yoo's actions no matter how uncomfortable those findings may be.
This Friday, April 10, FIRE JOHN YOO and WORLD CAN'T WAIT will confront UC recalcitrance to do the right thing.

Agenda for a New Economy Video and Discussion - Mon Apr 13, 7:30 pm
David Korten discusses how pouring money back into the "phantom wealth" of Wall Street will not heal all our economic woes. The "new economy" he envisions is locally based, community oriented, and devoted to a better life for all - not simply increasing the profits of the rich. It is a compelling agenda for our time, as we question how we should change the direction of our country.
After the video we'll focus on our varied and personal responses as progressives and ethical persons living in the midst of changes which are affecting many of us directly and certainly our world society as a whole.
Korten's two prior books are considered classics for sustainable economics: "The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community" published in 2006 and "When Corporations Rule the World" in 2001.

The Problem of Punishment: Race, Inequality, and Justice. Keynote speaker: Angela Davis
The Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies at the University of Virginia will present a symposium, The Problem of Punishment: Race, Inequality, and Justice, on Thursday, April 16 and Friday, April 17.
Due largely to several important policy changes connected to the “War on Crime” and the “War on Drugs,” the prison population has climbed steeply since the 1970s, an escalation resulting in the following developments:
The State of the Justice System
- The United States is the world’s leader in incarceration and death row inmates, holding 25% of the world’s prison population but only 5% of the world’s people.

Some of us are out on the bricks these days passing around our resumes and trying to find honest technical work. Who contacts us nine out of ten times?
If you guessed, "war profiteers" you would be right. I've gotten ten emails today from companies crowing over the big technical job fair in Baltimore on April 16.
http://securityclearanceexpo.com
"Technical Job Fair" sounds great until you realize that you can't even get on the premises without a security clearance.
Join us April 16, Noon-2 PM in the Baltimore BWI to protest this disgraceful event, and help hold this banner "War Profiteers Disgrace America".
At this historic turning point -- as we grapple with the sustainability of our markets, our health care, our energy and our leadership role in the world -- William Greider's new book, Come Home, America: The Rise and Fall (and Redeeming Promise) of Our Country, challenges us all to answer fundamental questions. Will the myriad of crises sink the American people deeper into alienation, or propel citizens to engage their government and shape our future?
Join legendary author and journalist William Greider in a discussion of his latest visionary book as we seek to spark a new populism that will steer America toward safer shores.

Twenty-three peace groups (including Northwest Greens) will hold a Bay of Pigs Peace Event from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. near Senator Arlen Specter's home on West Schoolhouse Lane (at Vaux Street) in East Falls. They want Specter to cut off funding for the U.S. occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan and to bring the troops home now.

Join us as we converge on Duke Energy’s headquarters in downtown Charlotte to demand that Duke cancel its climate change time bomb, the new Cliffside coal plant. If built, Cliffside would emit 6 million tons of CO2 each year from coal extracted through mountaintop removal mining.
We cannot be silent as Duke poisons our air, destroys the Appalachian mountains, and fans the flames of climate change for the sake of profit.
We demand clean energy, climate justice and a livable planet.
This Earth Day, join us as we take direct action to stop the construction of Cliffside and all new coal-fired power plants. The future is up to us.
The time to act is now!
We will be offering trainings in nonviolent direct action, Sunday, April 19th.
Come early, learn new skills, meet new friends, and get ready for action!

Blair
deserves to be called to task for his lap-dog duty to Bush+Cheney, even
as the Downing Street Memo shows his administration knew they were
lying about the reasons for attacking Iraq.
We
should be at the Arlington Theatre there early, say 7pm, to demand that
Tony Blair testify for the Prosecution against Bush+Cheney.
