Lynne Stewart: An American Story
The rough cut of a new film by Francis van den Heuvel.

The cliché after the September 11th attacks was that "the world had changed forever." And in some ways this is true. But more than the Twin Towers may have been destroyed - since that day centuries of judicial protections and procedures have been under attack. In the name of a "War on Terror" there has been a war on justice - and there may be no better example than the prosecution and conviction of one of New York's best known defence attorneys, Lynne Stewart. Her case forms the backbone of this film.

"The War Comes Home: Washington's Battle against America's Veterans" is the first book to systematically document the U.S. government's neglect of soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Aaron Glantz, who reported extensively from Iraq during the first three years of this war and has been reporting on the plight of veterans ever since, offers a devastating indictment of the Bush administration for its blatant neglect of soldiers and its disingenuous reneging on their benefits.

CRITICAL ISSUES FACING NEWS MEDIA

SUBJECT OF CONFERENCE MARCH 7-8

Critical issues facing the news media will be the subject of a two-day conference opening March 7 that will draw top authorities to the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover .

Five Pulitzer Prize winners as well as the directors of several media foundations will be among the presenters to discuss, “Full Court Press: Facing and Fixing Media Problems.”

“As well as undergoing transformative changes in technology that are shaking up the news industry as never before, journalists are being challenged to gather and report the news accurately from hazardous battlefields in the Middle East to the offices of Washington bureaucrats bent on classifying everything as secret. The journalists are not doing well,” said Lawrence Velvel, dean and cofounder of the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover and conference convener.

I have just received confirmation that Congressman John Conyers (MI) has accepted the invitation from the PNHP Philadelphia Metropolitan Chapter (Physicians for a National Health Plan) and HCAP to speak on HR 676 and what all of us need to do to muster massive support.

Please make plans to attend this program. They have not yet discussed the Agenda as they received the confirmation from Conyers' office yesterday.

We will need much publicity for the program as we need to fill the 200 + seats. We (HCAP & PNHP members) are looking for all to help (each of you) with publicity.

Although the program is free and open, we will encounter travel charges for Conyers and perhaps an assistant Wash DC to Philly to Detroit. Therefore we will be passing the hat there to pay for the trip.

Thanks again and please mark your calendars and get the word out.

Fellow Jackson Heights Progressives,

Drinking Liberally started in Manhattan in May 2003 as a support group for liberals and spread like wildfire across the country. Chapters meet every week at a local bar to chat and make new friends.

But what if we did more than drink and chat? What if we discussed concrete changes that we can bring about in our communities - and beyond?

That's the idea behind Changing Liberally. With your help, we hope to turn this idea into reality.

We've ordered light buffet for $7.50 each. Drinks (beer and wine) are a la carte.

Iraq War 6th Year Memorials Planned in Oklahoma City

The March 19, six-year anniversary of the start of the U.S. war in Iraq will be commemorated in Oklahoma City with memorial events, public vigils, and a silent memorial walk, according to planners. Peace House Director Nathaniel Batchelder said that the tone of events planned this year is more to seek higher wisdom to make the world less violent and more humane, and less to tell Washington, D.C., what to do.

In a statement sent to The City Sentinel, Batchelder said, “We are hopeful that a new administration and Congress can resolve the Middle East conflicts with more diplomacy and less violence.”
