Events
As Barack Obama takes office, our first priority is to help him revive the economy. But we also have to get America thinking even bigger, and thinking forward about a long-term strategy for prosperity that is sustainable. Please join us on Wednesday, February 11 to move that agenda forward.
The post-bubble economic crisis has led most Americans to reject the conservative mantra that "government is the problem." Today we are demanding that Congress pass a bold economic recovery plan that can spur growth and create jobs. But if we succeed, our job will have just begun. If we don’t want to return to another cycle of speculative bubbles followed by disastrous busts, we need to come up with a bold strategy for sustainable 21st century prosperity.
Phyllis Bennis of the Institute For Policy Studies will be talking

Come to hear Phyllis,a leading peace advocate, talk about peace efforts

As part of the 100 Days Campaign, we have been holding a daily vigil from 11am-1pm, Monday thru Friday, at the White House.
On February 12 at 8 a.m, we will gather for a presence at the Lincoln Memorial. Every year since the Memorial was dedicated, dignitaries, diplomats, and citizens have assembled in the chamber to honor Abraham
Lincoln on the day of his birth.
A guest speaker will read the Gettysburg Address. We will maintain a silent and somber presence, with orange jump suits, signs, and leaflets from 8am-9am and then head to our regular vigil at the White House (with a stop along the way for breakfast). Let us know if you can join (daloisio@riseup.net).

Central Florida Veterans for Peace is doing a protest/public-awareness action out at Daytona Beach Speedway during the Daytona 500 this Sunday, February 15th, from 12:30 to 3:00 PM. Sadly, this is already the 4th year that we are doing such an action out at the Speedway to call for the troops being brought home and those in Washington responsible for sending them there to die for a lie in the first place to be fully investigated and prosecuted by the law which the soldiers take an oath to defend.

Amnesty International Members to Urge Their U.S. Senators to Push for Accountability in the War on Terror
WASHINGTON - February 12 - Amnesty International members and other activists will be burning up the phone lines during the week of February 17 to urge their senators to fully investigate the U.S. government's abuses in the war on terror and hold accountable those responsible. Book Event: Gar Alperovitz and Marc Raskin
Join us for a conversation between two great public scholars on the key issues of our day, and celebrate new books by each of them.
In the United States, many Americans assume they have certain liberties and rights as citizens: freedom of speech, freedom of worship; the right to pursue happiness and transcend social class.
Gar Alperovitz, a professor of political economy at the University of Maryland, and Marc Raskin, co-founder of the Institute for Policy Studies, both recently co-authored books that question these assumptions. Over the past few decades, they argue, freedoms U.S. citizens take for granted have slowly eroded.
Join us for a stimulating discussion on how this happened and where we can go from here.

Book Event: Pentagon Reform: If Not Now, When?
Come attend this panel discussion to learn how U.S. conventional wisdom on military and defense has misled the public.
Three authors of the anthology America’s Defense Meltdown: Pentagon Reform for President Obama and the New Congress will discuss the decades-long — and continuing — deterioration in U.S. defense.
You should attend if:
• You think America’s defenses are “the best in the world,”
• You do believe more money will fix what is wrong in the Pentagon,
• You assume President Obama’s new Defense Department team is sure to bring real military reform
Come and debate the issues or just to listen to why the prevailing conventional wisdom in Washington, DC has been so wrong for so long.
The authors:
• Winslow T. Wheeler, who spent 30 years working for Republican and Democratic senators and the Government Accountability Office (GAO) on defense budget issues.
Elections are in March, and we expect candidates to appear.
The NVDC meets on the third Thursday every month. Come for optional dinner at 6:30, meeting at 7:00. For information, contact Pauline Posner 818-341-1955.

Protest the New York Post for its racist cartoon!
WHEN: Friday, Feb. 20, 4:45 PM
WHERE: News Corp. Building, 1211 Ave. of the Americas, bet. 47th and 48th Streets
We are United for Peace and JUSTICE.
We who continue to work for peace in Iraq and Afghanistan must make our voices heard against the vicious racism displayed by the New York Post in its recent cartoon. The fight for peace cannot be separated from the fight for justice.
The cartoon printed in Wednesday's New York Post depicts 2 white cops who have just shot a monkey saying "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill." On the previous page, there is a picture of President Obama signing the stimulus bill. Given the historic racist imagery depicting black people as monkeys, there is no way to construe this as anything but a revoltingly racist attack on the President.

Lynne Stewart: An American Story
The rough cut of a new film by Francis van den Heuvel.
The cliché after the September 11th attacks was that "the world had changed forever." And in some ways this is true. But more than the Twin Towers may have been destroyed - since that day centuries of judicial protections and procedures have been under attack. In the name of a "War on Terror" there has been a war on justice - and there may be no better example than the prosecution and conviction of one of New York's best known defence attorneys, Lynne Stewart. Her case forms the backbone of this film.

"The War Comes Home: Washington's Battle against America's Veterans" is the first book to systematically document the U.S. government's neglect of soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Aaron Glantz, who reported extensively from Iraq during the first three years of this war and has been reporting on the plight of veterans ever since, offers a devastating indictment of the Bush administration for its blatant neglect of soldiers and its disingenuous reneging on their benefits.

Want to restore jobs and stimulate the economy? A new study (pdf) released by the California Nurses Association says that establishing a national single-payer healthcare system would do both — in addition to providing health insurance for 47 million uninsured individuals.
According to the study, expanding Medicare to include the uninsured, and those on Medicaid or employer-sponsored health plans, and expanding coverage for those with limited Medicare, would have the following immediate impacts:

CRITICAL ISSUES FACING NEWS MEDIA
SUBJECT OF CONFERENCE MARCH 7-8
Critical issues facing the news media will be the subject of a two-day conference opening March 7 that will draw top authorities to the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover .
Five Pulitzer Prize winners as well as the directors of several media foundations will be among the presenters to discuss, “Full Court Press: Facing and Fixing Media Problems.”
“As well as undergoing transformative changes in technology that are shaking up the news industry as never before, journalists are being challenged to gather and report the news accurately from hazardous battlefields in the Middle East to the offices of Washington bureaucrats bent on classifying everything as secret. The journalists are not doing well,” said Lawrence Velvel, dean and cofounder of the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover and conference convener.
I have just received confirmation that Congressman John Conyers (MI) has accepted the invitation from the PNHP Philadelphia Metropolitan Chapter (Physicians for a National Health Plan) and HCAP to speak on HR 676 and what all of us need to do to muster massive support.
Please make plans to attend this program. They have not yet discussed the Agenda as they received the confirmation from Conyers' office yesterday.
We will need much publicity for the program as we need to fill the 200 + seats. We (HCAP & PNHP members) are looking for all to help (each of you) with publicity.
Although the program is free and open, we will encounter travel charges for Conyers and perhaps an assistant Wash DC to Philly to Detroit. Therefore we will be passing the hat there to pay for the trip.
Thanks again and please mark your calendars and get the word out.

Our Spring Break
We are seeking students to come to DC for their spring break and help end the illegal occupation, and related injustices. We will have a presence in DC from March 8th-March 22nd.
The week of the 8th through the 14th will be focused on the issue of torture and youth will be working with Witness Against Torture and their 100 Days Campaign.
The following week will focus on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with March 19th being the anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.
This year’s National Whistleblower Assembly is organized by the Make it Safe Coalition. Individual co-sponsors include:
- Government Accountability Project (GAP)
- International Association of Whistleblowers (IAW)
- National Whistleblowers Center (NWC)
- University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC-DCSL).
This year’s Assembly has four cornerstone objectives:
1. Matchmaking for solidarity and ongoing working relationships between whistleblowers and those who should benefit from their dissent, such as NGO’s, investigative journalists and government investigators;
2. Lobbying Congress to upgrade its rhetorical commitments for stronger whistleblower protection into reality, from completion of legislation pending nine years to overhaul the Whistleblower Protection Act, to comprehensive corporate rights expanding on five precedents in the last Congress
Bring the Backbone Campaign's Procession for the Future to Your Campus!
As you know, getting media attention and recruiting for our causes can sometimes feel dreary. The Backbone Campaign has learned that in terms of media and recruitment - SIZE MATTERS! Therefore we've created our Procession for the Future parade, consisting of over 20 giant puppets, icons and colorful banners. The Procession stands out and communicates that We the People are taking the lead, that progressive solutions are attainable for a beautiful future, and that being part of the movement is loads of fun!
