War is raging with no end in sight. Politics alone has not solved it. Media has not ended war. Religion does not seem to bring peace. Education alone is impotent. Families are providing cannon fodder, not enough peace builders. Economic instruments and systems seem to favor war more than peace. Law is not bringing the killing to an end. Music, painting, plays, fiction, film--the arts are justifying war more than peace.

None of these elements of our culture are oriented enough toward peace; all are crucial components of our culture. Indeed, each affects each other and each affects the outcome: will our culture tend to produce war or tend to produce peace?

Discussion: A View from the Ground in Iraq with Michael Ware (CNN)

Michael Ware, CNN's correspondent in Baghdad, is one of only a handful of international correspondents who has lived in and reported from Iraq since before the start of the war. Previously Time magazine's Baghdad Bureau Chief, Ware has provided perceptive reporting on the five years of the Iraq war, including groundbreaking reporting on the growth of Iraq's insurgency.

Impeachment 101: How Impeachment Serves a Democracy!

New Hampshire Citizens Support State Resolution to Petition for Bush/Cheney Impeachment

The people of New Hampshire have the power to send a petition to the U.S. Congress urging Congress to COMMENCE IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS.

If bill HR 24 passes in the N.H. House, it will be sent to the United States Congress. No vote in the Senate is needed, nor is the signature of the Governor.

Phone your representatives by April 15th and urge them to support Betty Hall's bill HR 24.

Better yet, have a CALLING BEE: Invite your friends to gather for an afternoon of telephoning all of NH's representatives.

Families are providing cannon fodder, not enough peace builders. Economic instruments and systems seem to favor war more than peace. Law is not bringing the killing to an end. Music, painting, plays, fiction, film--the arts are justifying war more than peace.

None of these elements of our culture are oriented enough toward peace; all are crucial components of our culture. Indeed, each affects each other and each affects the outcome: will our culture tend to produce war or tend to produce peace?

New Hampshire Citizens Support State Resolution to Petition for Bush/Cheney Impeachment

The people of New Hampshire have the power to send a petition to the U.S. Congress urging Congress to COMMENCE IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS.

If bill HR 24 passes in the N.H. House, it will be sent to the United States Congress. No vote in the Senate is needed, nor is the signature of the Governor.

Phone your representatives by April 15th and urge them to support Betty Hall's bill HR 24.

Better yet, have a CALLING BEE: Invite your friends to gather for an afternoon of telephoning all of NH's representatives.

We only need 202 votes for passage.

"How to Indict George W. Bush in Kennebunkport"

Join us for an information session about the Kennebunkport Town Meeting Ballot Article calling for the Indictment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

Maine's Independent US Senate Candidate Laurie Dobson will speak about reasons why this indictment should be taken up in Kennebunkport. The legal justification for this indictment resolution, has been prepared by human rights lawyer Harold Burbank, a Kennebunk native, and legal expert on the issue of war crimes.

The 'Bush-Cheney Indictment' resolution was delivered to the Kennebunkport Town Offices at high noon on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. Upon the receipt of the required 210 signatures, it shall be placed upon the Town Meeting Agenda for the June or November Warrants.

Historians Against the War (HAW) invites you to a national conference for historians and activists, April 11-13, 2008 at Georgia State University in downtown Atlanta, co-sponsored by the Peace History Society. The title is “War and Its Discontents: Understanding Iraq and the U.S. Empire.”

“Everything’s Cool” provides viable arguments from both sides of the global warming issue in a quirky and witty fashion. Unlike “An Inconvenient Truth”. “Everything’s Cool” tackles the same important topic without “Inconvenient Truth’s” scare tactics. The filmmakers follow numerous types of people on both sides of the argument from 2003 to 2006 and document how their lives are affected by global warming. The Iraq Policy Forum is being hosted by the Elliott School of International Affairs’ new Institute for Middle East Studies at The George Washington University.

More than a dozen US-based NGOs, including those now operating inside Iraq and in the Middle East Region, are convening this important Forum on the Humanitarian Situation Facing Iraqis. Our shared vision for the forum is a full day of panels that bring together key actors who are responding to humanitarian needs in Iraq and the region, including senior officials with UN, US, Iraqi, and nongovernmental agencies. We also plan to have respected scholars, refugee advocates and aid professionals who can offer recent perspectives from the field.

This event is taking place to highlight the humanitarian crisis in Iraq where millions of innocent Iraqis have been uprooted by war. Many fleeing Iraqis have no legal status beyond Iraq's borders.

Further, a number of sources have indicated that the percentage of torture victims within the Iraqi refugee population will be considerably higher than that of other recent refugee flows. One recent study estimated *one out of five Iraqi refugees are classified as victims of "torture and/or violence".*

Iraq Advocacy Days will take place on Tuesday & Wednesday, April 15-16. Advocacy training will be held Tuesday morning in Parish Hall at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, located at 212 East Capitol St, NE, just one block from the U.S. Capitol Building.

DC Poets Against the War, Kyle G. Dargan, Susan Tichy, and Melissa Tuckey at Greater Reston Art Center's Art with a Twist Program as part of their "Conflict" exhibit.

Kyle G. Dargan a member of the creative writing MFA faculty at American University in Washington, D.C. and founding editor of Post No Ills magazine. His debut collection of poems, The Listening, won the 2003 Cave Canem Prize, and his poems and non-fiction have appeared in publications such as Denver Quarterly, The Newark Star-Ledger, Ploughshares, and Shenandoah. Dargan has received fellowships to attend the Bucknell Seminar for Younger Poets and Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, as well as a scholarship to attend The Fine Arts Work Center. His second collection of poems, Bouquet of Hungers, was recently released by the University of Georgia press.

Saturday April 19, 2008 will mark the anniversary of the start of the American Revolution. This monumental date will also set the tempo for change in the greater Boston area. The What Is Change? Community Mobilization and Voter Registration Event will be an afternoon long engagement focused on providing thousands of Boston citizens the necessary tools for instituting change in the local and national levels. In addition to a voter registration drive, dozens of musicians and key local figures are slated to storm the stage with socially-conscious, solution-oriented music and messages.

Twenty-five peace groups (including the Green Party of Philadelphia) will hold a Bay of Pigs Peace Event from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, near Senator Arlen Specter's home on West Schoolhouse Lane (between Henry Avenue and Gypsy Lane) in East Falls.

The Peace Event will be in keeping with Passover's commemoration of liberation.

On April 20, 1961, the Cuban people defeated 1,400 private U.S. security contractors who had invaded Cuba's southern coast four days earlier at the Bay of Pigs.

American Blackout chronicles the recurring patterns of voter disenfranchisement from Florida 2000 to Ohio 2004 while following the story of Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. On Thursday, April 24th at 5pm MoveOn.Org and several local progressive groups will hold a rally on Iraq and the Recession in front of Senator Dianne Feinstein's office at 1 Post Street (corner of Post, Montgomery and Market). The rally will include street theatre and will feature the release of polling data that shows California residents believe that the Iraq War is connected to the current economic downturn.

Indiana Students Against War and Bloomington Peace Action Coalition are pleased to present an evening of education and inspiration with Cliff Kindy, and offer the public an opportunity to come together to speak out about the war and military occupation in Iraq.

Cliff Kindy, organic farmer, pacifist, and long-time member of Christian Peacemaker Teams, has recently returned from Iraq. He will open the Bloomington Town Hall Meeting by speaking about his experiences living and working with the people of Iraq, and give an eyewitness account of life under U.S. military occupation.

Following Mr. Kindy’s presentation, everyone will have an opportunity to speak out –

Phyllis Bennis is a nationally renowned analyst and author with credentials focused on the Middle East and United Nations. She has been sought out by national media for interpretation of statements made by the frontrunners in the Democratic candidate endorsement contest. In April, Bennis will travel to Minnesota for presentations in St. Paul, Edina and Rochester.

Bennis is a fellow of the Transnational Institute and the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington DC, which was called "the think tank for the rest of us" by iconoclastic American journalist I. F. Stone. Formerly based at the United Nations, Bennis is the author and editor of books on Palestine, Iraq, and the UN. As an embattled President Bush enters his final year in office and the electorate searches for his successor, a timely two-day conference on why presidents succeed or fail will draw eminent political scientists to the campus of the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover April 26-27.
Reflecting the urgency of the times, the conference is the second on the presidency sponsored by the law school in the past two years. 8th CD Candidate Forum Addresses $178 Billion War Funding Measure Sunday, 4/27 in San Francisco

As Congress begins debate on additional funding for Iraq and Afghanistan military operations, San Francisco peace groups have called a Town Hall Meeting to debate The Costs of War. The meeting will start at 5pm on Sunday, April 27th in the Victoria Theatre, 2961 16th Street (near Mission and Capp Streets).

Organizers are inviting all 2008 candidates for the 8th Congressional District house seat, currently occupied by Nancy Pelosi, to participate or send a representative -- regardless of their position on the issue. As of April 19th, Democrat Shirley Golub, Independent Cindy Sheehan and Libertarian Phil Berg have confirmed their participation.

Aside from candidate speeches, the Town Hall will feature questions and comments from the audience. A number of additional speakers are also

"A Rally In Support of the Bangor Six"

by US Senate Candidates Laurie Dobson (I) and Tom Ledue (D).
to be held on Tuesday, April 29, directly outside of the Bangor Superior Courthouse from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This rally is held in support of the six arrested for protesting Senator Collin and the Congress for continuing the war funding and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Lecture Hall at the Bangor Public Library will also be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for media and public use during the hearing. Dud Hendrick, one of the six arrested protestors will be available for media questions at the Lecture Hall directly following the hearing.

Speakers will include:

• Laurie Dobson, anti-war, pro-impeachment Independent Candidate for U.S. Senate, and general election challenger;

Exhibit places a human face on this humanitarian crisis.

Washington, D.C.—Rep. Maxine Waters (CA-35) will hold a photo exhibit highlighting the Iraqi refugee crisis on Wednesday, April 30 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in room 2220 of the Rayburn House Office Building. Rep. Waters is co-hosting the event with Reps. Alcee Hastings, Barbara Lee, and Lynn Woolsey.

Ms. Gabriela Bulisova, a documentary film photographer and adjunct professor at the Corcoran College of Art and Design recently returned from Iraq and Syria, where she captured images of Iraqi refugees. Her photo exhibit places a human face on this humanitarian crisis in an effort to bring greater attention on Capitol Hill to the plight of Iraqi refugees.

Since we were not aware of any "official" union actions in support of ILWU locally, the ad hoc May Day committee, made up of members of the Reno Antiwar Coalition, took it on ourselves to call for a solidarity demonstration outside the Federal Building at 10 a.m. on May 1st, demanding an end to the occupation.  Please join us there.  Any help you can provide is appreciated.

Longshoremen to close ports on West Coast to protest war

While millions of people worldwide have marched against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and last week's New York Times/CBS News poll indicated that 81 percent believe the country is headed in the wrong direction - key concerns being the war and the economy - the war machine inexorably grinds on.

Amid this political atmosphere, dockworkers of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union have decided to stop work for eight hours in all U.S. West Coast ports on May 1, International Workers' Day, to call for an end to the war.

Five Years after "Mission Accomplished"

On the 5th anniversary of President Bush's declaration of "Mission Accomplished", the Center for American Progress will reflect on the past five years at war.

This event is part of the Center for American Progress Series, The Impact of Five Years in Iraq

The Center for American Progress will host a series of events and produce several analyses in the coming weeks examining the course of the war in Iraq and proposing the next steps for U.S. policy in Iraq. The series will include speeches by prominent policymakers and panel discussions on important aspects of Iraq policy and its effects on U.S. national security. The Center will also release updated analyses examining the current policy in Iraq and providing an alternative direction.

Hear professors, students and staff speak about the truth behind five years of war and colonial occupation that are destroying Iraq and Afghanistan.

Learn more about the real history of this and other wars, and struggles for workers rights going back to the origins of “May Day,” when immigrant and U.S.-born workers joined together to fight for the eight-hour day.

Today, history is being made by workers in the United States using their power against the war: the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has decided to shut down all 29 West Coast ports for a full 8-hour shift against the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We will show solidarity with this exciting action of the Longshore workers, who have a long history of fighting against racism, repression and war.
And we will discuss what we can learn from this crucial event and where we go from here.

Bath, Maine screening of American Blackout

Many have heard of the alleged voting irregularities that occurred during the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004. Until now, these incidents have gone under-reported and are commonly written-off as insignificant rumors or unintentional mishaps resulting from an overburdened election system.

American Blackout chronicles the recurring patterns of voter disenfranchisement from Florida 2000 to Ohio 2004 while following the story of Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. McKinney not only took an active role investigating these election debacles, but has found herself in the middle of her own after publicly questioning the Bush Administration about the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
