ALLEVIATING POVERTY: An Agenda for Shared Prosperity forum

RSVP: Click here to reserve your seat today.

As members of Congress struggle over expanding public health care for children, the Economic Policy Institute will sponsor a timely forum on Alleviating Poverty. With a quarter to a third of U.S. workers in low-wage jobs that typically offer few benefits, full-time workers struggle to meet their basic needs and those of their children.

Please join with leading experts on the subject for a discussion about the need for a comprehensive, integrated work support system designed to address the challenges faced by ever growing numbers of America's workers and their families.

Jena: The Power of the People
By Jamilah Hoffman, 9/23/07

Some would say that the people have no power, that we’re hopelessly screwed. They would say that to act out is an exercise in futility because we can’t change things so why even bother. I would say that those people, who continue to espouse such views, that they must have living under a rock on Thursday, September 20th, when tens of thousands of people marched on Jena, Louisiana in support of the Jena S

From: Chicago Chapter of World Can't Wait
Subject: Iran Action Meeting Proposal

September 12,2007

Dear __________,

We stand at a dangerous precipice. Millions in Iraq and the Middle East, in
the U.S., and across the globe want the Iraq war to end. But the Bush regime
is preparing just the opposite: to continue its murderous escalation in Iraq
(antiseptically labeled the "surge") - and very likely launch a massive air
attack on Iran. We want to propose working with you and your group to develop
an action meeting on Iran soon to raise the alarm and organize opposition.

Over the last month, U.S. preparations for attacking Iran,
in the works for some two years at least, have taken a leap. See:

Start: 15:00

We're attending the Saint Paul City Council Meeting. www.ImpeachForPeace.org asks you to show up and wear impeachment shirts, buttons, etc. Signs are also allowed. Some people might wish to demonstrate outside the building, while others will likely want to attend the meeting itself wearing impeachment t-shirts or holding signs.

We stand at a dangerous precipice. Millions in Iraq and the Middle East, in the U.S., and across the globe want the Iraq war to end. But the Bush regime is preparing just the opposite: to continue its murderous escalation in Iraq (antiseptically labeled the "surge") – and very likely launch a massive air attack on Iran. It's estimated that half the U.S.' warships are now poised near Iran, including three aircraft carriers. This means that an attack on Iran wouldn't have to be preceded by a drawn out and obvious military build up. It could come very quickly – without warning – in an effort to "shock and awe" the world with a "fait accompli" – and stun people into passivity.

We are working together with a huge coalition of international organizations to put together this incredible day of action and we need you to make it happen.

We are expecting demonstrations and protests in up to 35 countries around the world. We are asking for everyone to wear the color red on that day -- red shirts, headbands, or other -- in solidarity with the monks inside Burma. After more than four and a half years as an occupying and destructive force in Iraq, what role does dissent play in the lives of Americans who are fed up, frustrated, and fuming about American Foreign Policy under the Bush Administration? And, how what we do---and don’t do now---will effect Foreign Policy in the next administration.

LORI SWANSON, Minnesota's Attorney General, will speak on predatory lending practices, along with a panel discussion in formation.

Minnesota’s predatory mortgage lending law, considered among the strongest in the nation, requires lenders to verify borrowers’ ability to repay their loan; bans refinancing loans without benefit to the borrower; and caps points and fees, among other provisions prohibiting unfair lending practices. The law was developed by Attorney General Lori Swanson’s Predatory Mortgage Lending Study Group, involving consumer advocates, bankers, business people and state legislators convened by Swanson in December 2006. Swanson previously served as Chair of the Consumer Advisory Council to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Minnesota’s predatory lending law informs reform efforts in New York and other states and serves as a model for legislation currently under consideration by the U.S. Congress.

The environmental and public health nightmare that began in New York City on 9/11 was unprecedented in its nature. The spread of toxic dust has resulted in hundreds of cases of firemen, rescue workers, police, and residents suffering from significant respiratory symptoms. The "WTC cough" has caused serious and persistent disabilities with an expected reduced life expectancy. So far we have only seen the tip of the iceberg. In the face of this calamity the Giuliani and Bush Administrations have responded with lies and deception.

After World War I, the most extensive chemical attacks occurred during the eight years of the Iran-Iraq war, in direct violation of The Geneva Protocol 1925. The employment of chemical weapons by Iraq resulted in more than 100,000 Iranian military and civilian casualties. Both organophosphates (nerve agent) and blistering (mustard gas) were frequently employed, many in forms never before seen with, therefore, no precedence in their effects and treatment. Throughout the conflict, and particularly in its final stages from 1986-88, the Iraqis employed a diverse spectrum of battlefield toxins. They also targeted civilians in the border towns and villages along the front line.

This is a rarely reported subject, even in Iran , and illuminates not only how the legacies of this terrible war continue to shape Iran , but also reminds us of the awful ongoing cost of war. It serves also to highlight Iran ’s attitude towards the international community with regards to its nuclear program.

Thirty-One Years...

This year's program will mark the 31st anniversary of the September 21, 1976 car bombing that killed Chilean diplomat Orlando Letelier and American Ronni Karpen Moffitt. Until 9/11, it was the most infamous act of international terrorism ever to take place in our nation's capital. Letelier and Moffitt were colleagues at the Institute for Policy Studies, where Letelier had become one of the most outspoken critics of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. Moffitt was a 25-year-old fundraiser who ran a "Music Carryout" that made musical instruments accessible to all. A massive FBI investigation traced the crime to the highest levels of Pinochet's regime.

The Institute for Policy Studies has continued to host the annual human rights award in the names of Letelier and Moffitt to honor these fallen colleagues while celebrating new heroes of the human rights movement from the United States and elsewhere in the Americas.

Presents:

THIRD THURSDAY GLOBAL ISSUES FORUM: TO IMPEACH OR NOT TO IMPEACH?

Article II, Section 4 of the federal Constitution states that civil officers of the US may be impeached for commission of "Treason, Bribery or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." Determining whether sufficient grounds exist for impeachment is the prerogative of the House of Representatives, while the actual trial subsequent to impeachment is entrusted to the Senate. Relevant questions relate to whether the alleged criminal actions were knowingly and deliberately committed and the political judgment as to whether impeachment - or the failure to impeach - will serve the best interests of the nation.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 19TH & every third Friday
www.Iraqmoratorium.org

Over 60% of Americans want this war over-yesterday - that was clear last November. Yet here we are, seven months later and the political process is moving glacially, at best. It's got to stop! We've got to stop it! The concept is simple.

On September 21 and on every subsequent Third Friday, millions of Americans will break with their daily routine to take some concrete step to demand an end to the war and the return home of the troops.

This will be an escalating series of actions serving to maximize, multiply and reenergize existing activists and even more importantly give voice to the silent majority of people who want an end to our engagement in Iraq.

The hallmark will be the wearing of black ribbons and armbands, in mourning for all of those who have died in this senseless adventure--Iraqis, Americans, coalition troops, and others.

Start: 12:30

Protest the police shooting of 14 year old Deonte Rawlings..everyone is urged to be out there "...demand an immediate stop to police killings, harrassment, and brutality of the people in Black and Latino community." from the flyer of the sponsoring orgs., DON'T SMOKE THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS & THE PAN AFRICAN LIBERATION ORG.
Friday, assemble: 12:30pm
300 Indiana Ave NW (police headquarters)
March and rally: 2:30pm
more info; call 202-882-1909
Bring sign, banners.

Start: 17:00
End: 18:00

A weekly peace vigil has been held in front of the Mendocino County Court House every Friday night from 5 to 6 pm for the last 5 years. All are welcome to come and join our demonstration. Dignity and respect for others is the only requirement. Bring your own peace signs or borrow ours.

In honor of our 50th anniversary we will celebrate Women Peacemakers – Five Generations on Monday, October 22, 2007. “Peace Stars” Yoko Ono, Cindy Sheehan, Jane Alexander, Jane Fonda and Christie Brinkley have been invited. We are expecting 450-500 guests at this gala affair.

Join Master of Ceremonies Phil Donahue as we honor women as peacemakers across the decades. The celebration will be held at the historic Hotel Alhambra in Harlem; built by a vaudeville mogul over a century ago, Harlem's Alhambra Ballroom once featured some of the biggest acts in black entertainment, including Bessie Smith, Jelly Roll Morton, and Billie Holiday, who was a singing waitress there.

Stay tuned for more details on what will be a memorable event!

We wanted to extend a special invitation to all of you to be part of the "studio audience" for a film shoot of Pulitzer Prize-winner Lawrence Wright's play, "My Trip to Al Qaeda."

The director Alex Gibney is shooting the play for a film he's making, in our theater in its original form. If you missed the play the first time around, this is a great and fun opportunity to see it.

This will be a straight run through, no stops and starts, with a Q and A afterwards. Apart from a few extra lights and some cameras, it will appear as it did for its sold out audiences here last year.

Lawrence Wright is an author, screenwriter, playwright, and staff writer for The New Yorker magazine. In 2006, he published “The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and The Road to 9/11”, to immediate and widespread acclaim. It spent eight weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction.

End the War Now - Protest 10/27, 11am, SF Civic Center

The U.S. occupation of Iraq has led to 4000 American deaths and roughly 30,000 injuries. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died and millions are homeless. Spending on the war thus far has been $454,144,172,448.

(Read that: $454 Billion, 144 Million, 172 Thousand, 448 dollars!)

And how much is a billion? It's 1,000 times a million...

While most Americans oppose the war, there is no end in sight.

If we want the destruction and waste to stop, we have to take to the streets in protest in large numbers. This is the only way our elected officials will realize that their perpetuation of the war will end their political careers.

Our communities are neglected and suffer the consequences.
