Ending the war in Iraq has been DFA's priority from day one, and we will not stop until every soldier is home. Now we're at another critical juncture. On September 11, General Petraeus is expected to report to Congress on the success of the "surge" in Iraq. He's supposed to outline our progress and our setbacks over the past few months.

But, we already know that's not going to happen. The General's report is going to "actually be written by the White House, with inputs from officials throughout the government."¹ President Bush will try to mislead the public again with a whitewashed progress report from Iraq.

We won't let him get away with it.

America needs the truth about what's happening in Iraq. The media must be stopped from blindly "reporting" more positive spin from the Administration.

Start: 00:00
End: 23:59

Today's the day! It's National, nationwide, Act on Iraq day, a campaign for a national call-in day to Congress to end the Iraq War.

What do you believe?

(1) Do you believe that the Iraq War has distracted us from the real war on terror, and has diminished American influence and standing in world affairs?

(2) Do you believe that the death of even one more American soldier in this unnecessary war is too many?

(3) Do you believe that the $177 million we spend each day on fighting a misguided, poorly planned war is a national travesty?

(4) Do you believe that the Iraq War has made us less safe by straining our military to the breaking point, pulling our focus from Afghanistan where Al Qaeda has rebuilt its forces, and fostering the recruitment of hundreds if not thousands of martyrs aligned against the U.S.?

(5) Do you believe that Congress has denied the overwhelming will of the American people to end the war?

Start: 15:00

We're attending the Saint Paul City Council Meeting. www.ImpeachForPeace.org asks you to show up and wear impeachment shirts, buttons, etc. Signs are also allowed. Some people might wish to demonstrate outside the building, while others will likely want to attend the meeting itself wearing impeachment t-shirts or holding signs.

MISSION STATEMENT

We, having dutifully served our nation, do hereby affirm our greater responsibility to serve the cause of world peace. To this end we will work, with others to:

1. Increase public awareness of the full costs of war.

2. Restrain our government from intervening, overtly or covertly, in the internal affairs of other nations.

3. End the arms race and to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons.

4. Seek justice for veterans and victims of war.

5. Abolish war as an instrument of national policy.

To achieve these goals, members of Veterans for Peace pledge to use non-violent means and to maintain an organization that is both democratic and open with the understanding that all members are trusted to act in the best interests of the group for the larger purpose of world peace.

We urge all people who share this vision to join us.

Impeachment now is imperative. If, We the People fail to force accountability for these crimes this fall, President Bush will have a free ride with impunity through the Presidential election year of 2008, when the Constitutional duty to impeach will succumb to political pressure, to the end of his second term in January 2009.

The impeachment of Bush, Cheney and the other civil officers of the United States is not merely the best way to bring our troops home from Iraq and prevent new aggressions, it is the sure way and the only way. President Bush, who assaults nations in the name of democracy has proclaimed himself the one man “decider” for the fate of our country and its victims. For him, democracy is an election controlled by wealth every four years and dictatorship in between.

If we fail, the world will see that the American people are powerless to effectively oppose Bush policies that have angered and embittered billions of people, making enemies of most nations, or worse, that the American people support Bush policies. How else could such lawless and destructive policies be tolerated?

Join Iraq Veterans Against the War, Veterans for Peace, the ANSWER Coalition, Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation, and thousands of others in Washington DC on September 15 for a huge antiwar protest timed to coincide with the report by General Petraeus on the "Surge" in Iraq.

The Mobile Chapter of The Veterans for Peace, along with Citizens for Peace, and the Peace Is Possible Coalition will be hosting an IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY rally here in Mobile on September 15th. Our event is corresponding to the march on Washington on that same date.

We will have as our guest of honor, THE BILLY SUNDAY BAND, featuring their latest anti-war song. We plan to line the streets on both sides of the park, holding IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY signs, and also, anti-war signs. Our event is corresponding with national events being held on that same day, especially the big march on Washington.

We plan to line the streets on both sides of the park, facing all the passing traffic on Government Street and Airport Blvd, holding our anti-bush and anti-war signs. Be creative and make a colorful sign, or use one of ours, but please join us in what looks to be a major turning point for the war and bush.

Thousands of protesters will gather in the nation's capital from September 15th until the 21st for a massive anti-war/anti-occupation mobilization. The Petraeus Report is scheduled to be released at this time and Congress will be taking up the bill authorizing billions more to prolong this tragic war. For those of you whose hearts and souls will be in D.C. but bodies are stuck in the other Washington, please join together with others who share your outrage at this administration, the lack of accountability, and the inability of Congress to put the brakes on their violations of the Constitution and total disregard for human rights and the rule of law. Arizona Common Cause

About Dennis Burke: As an activist and former director of Arizona Common Cause, Dennis Burke helped lead the 1998 effort to pass the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Act by ballot proposition. The Act provides voluntary public financing to candidates for state-level elected office who agree
to run without private campaign contributions. The system is funded by surcharges on civil and criminal fines and a voluntary tax check-off. Arizona’s Clean Elections system is credited with increasing the number of women and people of color running for state office, boosting voter turnout in communities of color, and reducing the influence of special interest campaign money.

Tuesday, September 25: Take to the streets when war criminal Bush comes to the UN!

The eyes of the world will be on New York when this monstrous commander-in-chief of a government responsible for horrendous death and suffering from New Orleans to Iraq, comes to speak at the UN.

  • Will they see people leaving school or work in powerful and determined actions and protests declaring that Bush & Cheney don’t speak in our name?
  • Will they see actions that denounce the torture, the tearing up of basic civil rights, and the march towards a theocratic police state?
  • Will the whole area be marked by the color of orange, declaring to the world that this whole murderous program must be brought to a halt and the Bush regime driven out?

Bush is expected to present justifications to the UN for a new towering crime –the expanding of the war to Iran, including threats of use of nuclear weapons.

Start: 19:00

On Tuesday, September 25th, 2007, George W. Bush will be speaking at the UN at 9:30 AM.

We are organizing an action series that you may want to participate in and we encourage you and your friends/comrades to join us.

We are organizing coffin walks from around the city that will converge on the UN at approximately 9:30 AM. These walks are technically legal in that they require no permit. We will walk on the sidewalk, obey traffic signals, and carry coffins, wear T-shirts or carry signs that say "Arrest Bush". Each group only needs six people in it to have an impact.

A "citizen's arrest" of George Bush will happen at the UN. Although the exact details will be worked out by those involved, the idea is to bring a warrant for his arrest for Murder, Kidnapping, Torture, Destruction of Property, Illegal Wiretapping etc. to the UN and try to detain him so that we can put him on trial for these crimes in Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo, and at home.

End: 21:00

The purpose of the series is to educate the members of the Loyola community on the meaning of impeachment and why, if we are to uphold the principles of our Jesuit university and of the United States Constitution, it is our responsibility to demand constitutional government leadership.

Bill Wylie-Kellermann, Methodist pastor and peace activist, will be speaking on the illegal tactics of surveillence including wire tapping that this administration has used. He will begin by looking at this issue through a biblical lens.

This event has been marked as open to the public.

I invite all my brothers and sisters in the movement to come to D.C. for the International Day(s) of Peace, Sept. 20 & 21. One of those two days, the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance will be organizing a massive nonviolent direct action on Capitol Hill.

Why should I come to D.C. instead of trying to do something in my own area?

First of all, the powerholders will be in town on Sept. 20/21, and therefore we should be as well. We should be peacefully occupying Capitol Hill and surrounding the symbol of our supposed democracy -- the Capitol Building. Every day we do not act in concert, to make the strongest statement possible is another day of death and destruction in Iraq. Why should we not just then press for the biggest action possible in order to directly confront those continuing to fund war and military occupation?

Join the nationwide protest against a racist outrage.

Six young African American students (ages 16-18) have been framed up in Jena, Louisiana and are facing up to life in prison for a schoolyard fight with a white student.

It all began when African American students dared to sit under the “white tree” outside the school. Three nooses were then found hanging from the tree. Three white students were expelled by the principal, but the superintendent of schools reduced it to a 3-day suspension, calling it a “prank.”

Afterwards, all of the African American students stood under the tree.

The District Attorney came to the school and told the African American students to stop the protests or “I can end your lives with one stroke of my pen.”

For Colleagues of Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence AND other friends interested in Iraq, Iran, intelligence, and truth:

It has been exactly three years since (with the help of Prof. Peter Kuznick of American University, Dan Ellsberg, and supportive friends) we held that wonderful gathering of truth-tellers (and hundreds of their closest friends, as well as students) in that cavernous auditorium at American University. It's a morale boost just to recall all those folks sitting/standing in the aisles—Dan Ellsberg, Coleen Rowley (then still with the FBI), Katharine Gunn (from UK intelligence), Col. Frank Grevil (from Danish intelligence), Ann Wright and John H. Brown (two of the three Foreign Service Officers who quit because of the invasion of Iraq), David MacMichael et. al.

It was a memorable evening. But there was a hidden blessing.

Background:

Last fall, when two Black high school students sat under the "white" tree on their campus, white students responded by hanging nooses from the tree. When Black students protested the light punishment for the students who hung the nooses, District Attorney Reed Walters came to the school and told the students he could "take [their] lives away with a stroke of [his] pen."

Racial tension continued to mount in Jena, and the District Attorney did nothing in response to several egregious cases of violence and threats against black students. But when a white student--who had been a vocal supporter of the students who hung the nooses--taunted a black student, allegedly called several black students "nigger", and was beaten up by black students, six black students were charged with second-degree attempted murder. Last month, the first young man to be tried, Mychal Bell, was convicted. Later this month, he will be sentenced to up to 22 years in prison for a school fight.

Ever wish nostalgically for the old days?

Bill Clinton on The Daily Show

Former President Bill Clinton will be sitting down with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show for the third next Thursday, September 20.

We can't say for certain what the purpose of his visit will be, but it's a safe bet to assume that it has something to do with his new book, Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World, which, we understand, is some kind of a sci-fi vampire novel. (We also wouldn't discount some discussion of his chances at being the first male First Lady.)

His newspaper commentaries have run in many national newspapers, including The Chicago Tribune, The L.A. Times, The Miami Herald, and a host of other newspapers. You Have No Rights tells 82 harrowing stories of people in America whose rights were trampled on.

Rothschild demonstrates how the war in Iraq has also been a war on our liberties. The stories he tells add up to a powerful indictment of our political leaders; but they also remind us, as citizens, that we must insist on taking back our stolen rights. -Howard Zinn

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 21st & every third Friday
www.Iraqmoratorium.org

Over 60% of Americans want this war over-yesterday - that was clear last November. Yet here we are, seven months later and the political process is moving glacially, at best. It's got to stop! We've got to stop it! The concept is simple.

On September 21 and on every subsequent Third Friday, millions of Americans will break with their daily routine to take some concrete step to demand an end to the war and the return home of the troops.

This will be an escalating series of actions serving to maximize, multiply and reenergize existing activists and even more importantly give voice to the silent majority of people who want an end to our engagement in Iraq.

The hallmark will be the wearing of black ribbons and armbands, in mourning for all of those who have died in this senseless adventure--Iraqis, Americans, coalition troops, and others.

Start: 08:45

As a follow-up to our wildly successful impeachment Town Hall meeting with Minneapolis City Council Members Cam Gordon and Elizabeth Glidden, we're attending the Minneapolis City Council Meeting Friday, September 21st. According to sources on the Minneapolis City Council, they will be taking up impeachment in the next few weeks. Council Member Remington has shown support for this cause.

www.ImpeachForPeace.org is asking you to show up at the Minneapolis City Council at 8:45am. We suggest you wear impeachment shirts, buttons, etc. Signs are also allowed, but we've been asked to sit along the back of the room out of respect for the proceedings. Some people might wish to demonstrate outside the building, while others will likely want to attend the meeting itself wearing impeachment t-shirts or holding signs.

U.S. Senate Democratic Policy Committee Hearing

“The Mistreatment of Iraq Contracting Whistleblowers”

This Friday, the U.S. Senate Democratic Policy Committee will host a hearing on the retaliation faced by whistleblowers that have come forward with evidence of fraud and abuse in Iraq . Recent reports from auditors suggest that questioned and unsupported costs associated with Iraq reconstruction and military support contracts exceed $10 billion (or more than one in six dollars audited). This hearing will feature witnesses who have been fired, demoted, threatened, intimidated and even detained for speaking the truth about Iraq contracting practices. We will also hear from expert witnesses who will recommend policy reforms to address whistleblower mistreatment and strengthen protections in current law. Witnesses will include:

The Walter Reed Vigil is now in its third year. Support in the immediate community, around the country, and around the world continues to grow.

We call on all who believe in the Vigil message to join us, particularly this Friday night, September 21, 2007, to participate in the National effort to end the war, calling on everyone to do something, an action large or small, wearing armbands, holding vigils, initiating discussions in the workplace and elsewhere, and, for some, civil disobedience.

No one who opposes this war and occupation...opposes war with Iran...can afford to sit by waiting for someone else to get the job done. It is more important than ever for us all to act.

Please join us at the Vigil on Friday evening. Busboys and Poets can wait a couple hours. Make this your night to be on the street.

Money for Bridges and Cities, NOT War! Sept. 29 in DC

On October 1, Congress is scheduled to authorize over $100 billion for continued war in Iraq, and estimates for the long term costs of the war are over $2 trillion. Already more than $500 billion has been spent.

Meanwhile, as the tragedy following this week's collapse of a bridge in Minneapolis reminds us, we face daily danger from our collapsing infrastructure. This includes, not only 590,000 bridges, but roads, rail lines, subways, levees, preparedness for natural disaster emergencies, schools, hospitals, etc.

Almost five years of U.S. occupation has destroyed the cities and towns of Iraq, killed more than 1 million Iraqis, created 4 million refugees (2 million displaced inside Iraq and 2 million refugees in nearby countries) left 70% of the population without potable water, electricity, schools or hospitals. Almost 4,000 U.S. GIs have died, many thousands are injured and maimed.

Yes the Democrats were in control of Congress when the "Exploratory War Authorization" was approved, but I don't believe any one anticipated that "W" would do what he has done since then, except possibly those Republican Insiders that had prior knowlege of his Ultimate Plans.

His abuse of the "Signing Statements" is just one example of why, now that the Democrats are again in control, they can't control what he does without some help from the Republicans.

As a longtime student of our Constitution, I don't understand why more Republicans aren't OUTRAGED by what he has been allowed to get away with in his destruction of our Constitution!!!!!!!!!!!!

Start: 00:30

At 8:30 a.m., at least twelve marches, starting at different locations throughout New York City, will converge at the United Nations to confront President Bush when he arrives to address the General Assembly.

People, carrying coffins, beating drums, holding signs demanding that President Bush be arrested - some vowing to arrest him themselves - will surround the United Nations and declare the illegitimacy of the Bush Administration and its on-going occupation of Iraq.

Less Safe, Less Free: The "Preventive Paradigm" and the War on Terror

A book discussion with David Cole and Bradford Berenson

Featured Panelists:

David Cole, Professor, Georgetown University Law Center and Co-Author of Less Safe, Less Free

Bradford Berenson, Former Associate Counsel to President George W. Bush, and Partner, Sidley Austin LLP

Moderated by:
Mark Agrast, Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress

In the new book Less Safe, Less Free: Why America is Losing the War on Terror, Georgetown Law Professor David Cole and his co-author Jules Lobel argue that the "preventive paradigm" adopted by the Bush administration not only has undermined our nation's character but has also made us more vulnerable to terrorist attacks.

BUSH – CHENEY

STOP IRAQ OCCUPATION NOW!

TAKE DIRECT IMPEACHMENT ACTION

Rep. Allen knows that Bush-Cheney have committed impeachable offenses but refuses to sign onto legislation calling for their impeachment. Help us demand justice and respect for the Constitution!

Join the Maine Campaign to Impeach as we hand out leaflets, rally, and march to the office of Rep. Tom Allen.

Rally 1:00 pm at Tommy's Park, then at 1:30 pm we'll deliver letters demanding impeachment to Allen's Office.

Rep. Tom Allen has recently acknowledged that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney have committed multiple impeachable offenses. But Rep. Allen refuses to support legislation calling for impeachment of Bush-Cheney because it would be a “distraction.”

Since when is protecting the Constitution a distraction? (Impeachment by the House of Representatives actually just means investigations for crimes against the Constitution.)

EMERGENCY DEMONSTRATION AT THE WHITE HOUSE

TUES, SEPT. 25, 3 P.M.

DEMAND "NO WAR ON IRAN"

The demonization of Iran taking place in New York is meant to prepare the people for war.

Join us at the White House in an emergency protest, Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. to demand:

NO WAR ON IRAN!

As Iran's president prepares to speak to the UN General Assembly, a tsunami of pro-war propaganda is being aimed against yet another oil-rich country in the Middle East.

The Troops Out Now Coalition (TONC), which is currently staging an Encampment at the Capitol to tell Congress to stop funding the war against Iraq and instead fund people's needs at home, will be marching to the White House to tell Bush:

Get out of Iraq and stay out of Iran!

The “losers” will become recipients of the “Lawn Jockey Awards,” inspired by George Curry, the former editor of Emerge magazine, who pasted Clarence Thomas’s face on the jockey to righteously denounce his treasonous behavior as Supreme Court Justice. Mr. Curry will be a speaker at our event.

Dear Activists for the Earth,

We are writing to invite you, to urge you, to participate in two important actions being planned for the morning of Sept. 27th and noontime on Sept. 28th in Washington, D.C.

Here's the scoop: In an unprecedented and clearly manipulative move, George Bush is inviting top leaders from around the world to Washington, D.C. September 27-28th to officially convey his "deep concern" about global warming. His proposed fix: more useless "voluntary" measures and huge subsidies for "clean coal" and nuclear energy. The event is clearly meant to undermine real international efforts now underway to achieve stronger, mandatory greenhouse gas cuts under the Kyoto process, and we will be there to have our voices heard in protest.

On Thursday morning, just before the conference begins, scores of us will be joining together to engage in an act of nonviolent civil disobedience. If you want to participate with us in this act or are seriously interested, please call or email Ted Glick at 301-891-6723 or usajointheworld@igc.org.

The next day there will be a major rally at 12 noon, on the day when Bush is speaking inside the State Dept. We have the grassy area between D & E Streets at Virginia Avenue, on the northeast side of the State Department, reserved for this event. There will be speakers, including Van Jones of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, music and theatre.

Please save the date and register for the rally at http://www.climateemergency.org so we can keep you updated in the coming days. Also please check in frequently for updates at the website listed above, or by calling 301-891-6723.

Top ministers and heads of state from around the world will be attending Bush's conference as well as a great concentration of national and international media. We need to show up and loudly proclaim our own message: George Bush doesn't speak for us! We want real climate action now!

Sincerely,

Join hundreds of activists for the Earth outside the State Dept. next Friday, Sept. 28th at noon. Protest climate disrupter George Bush who will be speaking inside to a conference of the 17 major carbon emitters of the world. Bush has called this conference to try to undercut international negotiations underway to come up with a stronger treaty to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, something urgently needed. Bush will attempt to line up countries behind useless "voluntary" measures and huge subsidies for non-existent "clean coal" and nuclear power.

The noon rally will include Van Jones of the Ella Baker Center for Human rights, other speakers and music. More information can be found at http://www.climateemergency.org. ALLEVIATING POVERTY: An Agenda for Shared Prosperity forum

RSVP: Click here to reserve your seat today.

As members of Congress struggle over expanding public health care for children, the Economic Policy Institute will sponsor a timely forum on Alleviating Poverty. With a quarter to a third of U.S. workers in low-wage jobs that typically offer few benefits, full-time workers struggle to meet their basic needs and those of their children.

Please join with leading experts on the subject for a discussion about the need for a comprehensive, integrated work support system designed to address the challenges faced by ever growing numbers of America's workers and their families.

Jena: The Power of the People
By Jamilah Hoffman, 9/23/07

Some would say that the people have no power, that we’re hopelessly screwed. They would say that to act out is an exercise in futility because we can’t change things so why even bother. I would say that those people, who continue to espouse such views, that they must have living under a rock on Thursday, September 20th, when tens of thousands of people marched on Jena, Louisiana in support of the Jena S

Subject: Iran Action Meeting Proposal

September 12,2007

Dear __________,

We stand at a dangerous precipice. Millions in Iraq and the Middle East, in
the U.S., and across the globe want the Iraq war to end. But the Bush regime
is preparing just the opposite: to continue its murderous escalation in Iraq
(antiseptically labeled the "surge") - and very likely launch a massive air
attack on Iran. We want to propose working with you and your group to develop
an action meeting on Iran soon to raise the alarm and organize opposition.

Over the last month, U.S. preparations for attacking Iran,
in the works for some two years at least, have taken a leap. See:

Start: 15:00

We're attending the Saint Paul City Council Meeting. www.ImpeachForPeace.org asks you to show up and wear impeachment shirts, buttons, etc. Signs are also allowed. Some people might wish to demonstrate outside the building, while others will likely want to attend the meeting itself wearing impeachment t-shirts or holding signs.

We stand at a dangerous precipice. Millions in Iraq and the Middle East, in the U.S., and across the globe want the Iraq war to end. But the Bush regime is preparing just the opposite: to continue its murderous escalation in Iraq (antiseptically labeled the "surge") – and very likely launch a massive air attack on Iran. It's estimated that half the U.S.' warships are now poised near Iran, including three aircraft carriers. This means that an attack on Iran wouldn't have to be preceded by a drawn out and obvious military build up. It could come very quickly – without warning – in an effort to "shock and awe" the world with a "fait accompli" – and stun people into passivity.

We are working together with a huge coalition of international organizations to put together this incredible day of action and we need you to make it happen.

We are expecting demonstrations and protests in up to 35 countries around the world. We are asking for everyone to wear the color red on that day -- red shirts, headbands, or other -- in solidarity with the monks inside Burma. Organize an event or protest in your community, church, city, or join us at the Chinese embassies and consulates in the United States and around the world.

LORI SWANSON, Minnesota's Attorney General, will speak on predatory lending practices, along with a panel discussion in formation.

Minnesota’s predatory mortgage lending law, considered among the strongest in the nation, requires lenders to verify borrowers’ ability to repay their loan; bans refinancing loans without benefit to the borrower; and caps points and fees, among other provisions prohibiting unfair lending practices. The law was developed by Attorney General Lori Swanson’s Predatory Mortgage Lending Study Group, involving consumer advocates, bankers, business people and state legislators convened by Swanson in December 2006. Swanson previously served as Chair of the Consumer Advisory Council to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Minnesota’s predatory lending law informs reform efforts in New York and other states and serves as a model for legislation currently under consideration by the U.S. Congress.

The environmental and public health nightmare that began in New York City on 9/11 was unprecedented in its nature. The spread of toxic dust has resulted in hundreds of cases of firemen, rescue workers, police, and residents suffering from significant respiratory symptoms. The "WTC cough" has caused serious and persistent disabilities with an expected reduced life expectancy. So far we have only seen the tip of the iceberg. In the face of this calamity the Giuliani and Bush Administrations have responded with lies and deception.
