The House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. announced that he will be holding a full committee hearing next week titled, “The Use and Misuse of Presidential Clemency Power for Executive Branch Officials.” The hearing will be held next Wednesday, July 11, at 10:15 am in the committee’s hearing room, 2141 Rayburn House Office Building.
“In light of yesterday’s announcement by the President that he was commuting the prison sentence for Scooter Libby, it is imperative that Congress look into presidential authority to grant clemency, and how such power may be abused,” Conyers said. “Taken to its extreme, the use of such authority could completely circumvent the law enforcement process and prevent credible efforts to investigate wrongdoing in the executive branch.”

US Government Targets Anti-war Reverend and Veteran
Call for Action & Solidarity!!
Peace and justice advocate and U.S. Air Force veteran Rev. Lennox Yearwood is challenging the Air Force’s attempt to label his activities ‘inconsistent with national security’ as a cause for his discharge from the Ready Reserve.
This move against Rev. Yearwood is part of a pattern of government harassment targeting anti-war veterans. The specific citation used in this case suggests an outrageous attempt to attack the reputation and credibility of this powerful voice for justice. The section cited reads: ‘misconduct or immoral or professional dereliction, behavior clearly not consistent with national security.’
Start: 19:00

Flag Wars is the fourth film in the Washington Peace Center's Cost of War film series.
Shot over four years, "Flag Wars" is a poignant 90-minute account of economic competition between two historically oppressed groups, seen through the politics and pain of gentrification. The setting could be any city with a once stable working and middle class black community, now aging and economically depressed, in danger of losing control of their neighborhoods as wealthier home buyers gentrify block by block. In this case, the neighborhood is in Columbus, Ohio and the home buyers are largely white and gay.

A USA Today/Gallup poll released this week shows that 7 out of 10 people in this country want all the troops brought home from Iraq. What a contrast with August 2003 when fewer than 4 out of 10 were opposed to the war! The crisis in Iraq and our work have created this shift!
But still Bush runs for cover and continues to say that troops should be left in Iraq to fight the real war on terror! We cannot let that happen! We need to grapple with several questions:
* What is our strategy given the political moment?
* How are we going to engage that 70% - developing an even broader, politically engaged network at the grassroots?
* How can each of us in our neighborhoods and communities reach out to people who have not been actively involved in ending this war?
Please join NYC-UFPJ on Thursday, July 19 to discuss these critical questions and talk about a strategy to involve the growing opposition in some new and exciting actions this summer and fall.

With all the rancor, myths, and misinformation swirling about regarding impeachment of elected officials, it was refreshing to watch a calm, reasoned, and yet passionate discussion of the topic on last Friday's Bill Moyers Journal on PBS. Moyers had both conservative and liberal individuals in the discussion. What was interesting to me was that these political labels mattered less than the respect shown for the US Constitution and the principles upon which our country was founded.
This Saturday, July 21, you are invited to watch the Bill Moyers Journal program and engage in followup discussion to be further educated about the issue and what relevant actions you can take. Join us at 6:00 at the Land Trust building for our potluck and Vashon Democratic Club discussion, or come at 6:30 when the Impeachment Forum will begin.

The momentum behind the impeachment movement is picking up steam!
Start: 07:00
End: 09:00
Hello, to everyone in the Madison community who is fighting for peace and justice:
The impeachment coalition is organizing a street theatre event that will raise public awareness of the policies of torture, the human suffering and the violation of national and international laws committed by this administration.
We hope to make a powerful visual statement to thousands of people driving to work. We will walk in chains, wear the orange Guantanamo prisoner suits with black hoods and be guarded and subjected by American soldiers in fatigues.
We hope to upset commuters'usual morning thoughts and provoke contemplation of these abuses througout the day by an image that they cannot forget, seen three days in a row.
After having time to think about torture being carried out in our name, they may be more inclined to take a few minutes of their time to sign a petitition and get involved through contacting local elected officials.

Last year, Congressman John Conyers participated in several Detroit townhall meetings in which he promised to the people: if Democrats were to win the elections in November 2006, he would uphold the law and the will of the people and impeach the war criminals currently holding the titles of President and Vice President of the United States of America.
In what was widely seen as an indictment of the criminal war of aggression in Iraq and of Bush's policies, Democrats gained the majority in Congress. John Conyers is now the Head of the Judiciary Committee, and holds the power to uphold the law and begin impeachment proceedings.
Now, Congressman Conyers refuses to start the impeachment process; he has broken his promises to the people of Detroit, and the world!
Start: 10:00
Marchers will assemble on the morning of July 23rd at Arlington National Cemetery and march to the Capitol Hill office of House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers to urge him to begin impeachment proceedings. Participants plan to sit in, read the US Constitution aloud, and if necessary face arrest. Similar sit-ins will happen the same day in Conyers' district offices in Michigan.
March for Peace and Impeachment with Cindy Sheehan, Ray McGovern, Reverend Lennox Yearwood, Debra Sweet, Dave Lindorf, Dave Swanson from Arlington Cemetery to Rep. John Conyers' office in the Rayburn House Office Building to ask him to begin impeachment proceedings against Vice President Dick Cheney and President George W. Bush.

Start time uncertain but it will be afternoon Read the names of all our U.S. dead in Iraq And I will remain in office until the Congressman agrees to return our country to the rule of law by supporting the impeachment of both the President and Vice President. Of course if the Congressman declines to return us to the rule of law, I will gladly allow myself to be escorted off to jail. If we live in a criminal country and decline to do what we can to change it, I believe I belong in jail. I am not asking anyone to join me in the CD aspect of this action, but I would welcome whatever other support could be given. Of course it goes without saying that anyone else sufficiently estranged by their government and wishing to join in the CD would be welcome. Inspiration for this event came from Cindy Sheehan. She will be doing a similar action in House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers' Washington office at the same time.

Hungry for Justice Coalition
Hungry for Justice was formed in April 2007 as an adhoc committee to organize local and national support for the defendants in the Holy Land Foundation Federal trial. We adhere to non-violent principles and affirm the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The People Of Madison Refuse To Be Bystanders To Torture. We Must Impeach!
President Bush and Vice President Cheney have been critized for authorizing the torture of prisoners in Iraq, Guantanamo and other U.S run prisons and camps. “Real Americans don’t torture. Bush and Cheney do. They should be impeached for their crimes. Torture is outlawed by the Geneva Conventions, our Constitution and the US Code of Military Justice,” said Buzz Davis of Stoughton. Davis, a member of the Impeachment Coalition of Dane County, is a former U.S. Army officer.

Protest the war at Senator Webb's Richmond VA office each Wednesday noon to 1 PM. We're using "W" - Wed (W for W, Webb, Warner, War, etc) until Webb comes up with something to make up for a very sad vote.
One hour on Wednesdays could change things for the better.
We have a big "Don't Buy Bush's War" banner, but bring any other messages you would like to bring. May bring some of the "Walk in Their Shoes" display, time and car permitting (my car just died-but am within walking distance of office).
Wear some PINK and bring a friend.

Post locations of your Orange Fridays so others can join you. Post your plans and locations for the July 27 Launch Day.
In this climate of increasing demand for impeachment and where a constitutional crisis could be shaping up as the Bush White House denies subpoenas from Congress, the people must enter into this situation, demanding resolution in the interests of people of the world and this country.
The color of orange must be everywhere. On Orange Fridays, pick a regular spot. Distribute orange bandanas, ribbons, armbands, plastic emergency tape, and signs. Distribute the WCW Call. Encourage all to wear orange in their daily lives and to take orange for all those who ask, What does that orange mean? Encourage them to bring five friends to the Orange Friday the following week.
