Democratic Primary Trash Talk
Josh Marshall raises a crucial issue for Democratic blogs:
It is remarkable, or perhaps it's not so remarkable, how rapidly this punching match over race has escalated between the Clinton and Obama camps.
I agree.
Some of the statements recently attributed to the Clintons have seemed at best awkward in how they're discussing race and the civil rights movement, others have struck me as unobjectionable statements interpreted in a tendentious fashion.
I agree.
You can see in our news section we've picked up the story just out from The Guardian which quotes some unidentified "Clinton advisor" saying: "If you have a social need, you're with Hillary. If you want Obama to be your imaginary hip black friend and you're young and you have no social needs, then he's cool."
WTF???
On the surface this is a ridiculously stupid stereotyping statement. But why on earth would a serious blogger like Josh Marshall use a blind quote that is divisive and attribute it to an unidentified "Clinton advisor"???
We all know there are people trying to stir up divisions inside the Democratic coalition. They're doing it now and they will do it until election day.
Who are these people? Most likely they are Republicans or Liebercrats (hello Dan Gerstein!). But if they are real Democrats, they could just as easily be supporters of Obama, Edwards, or Kucinich as "Clinton advisors." Hell, it could even be a reporter/editor trying to manufacture buzz.
Remember the Kerry quotes that Fox's Carl Cameron simply invented to smear Kerry???
Josh does acknowledge the meaningless of calling someone an "advisor"
'advisor' is a notoriously slippery phrase that can mean almost anything. Campaigns have hundreds, perhaps thousands of people who in one fashion or another 'advise' them. A lot of those people aren't under any kind of real control.
Still, Josh assumes that someone identified anonymously as an "advisor" by a reporter is actually a formal member of the campaign team. But why should we assume that? If I go to a Hillary rally and yell "Go Hillary" could a "journalist" call me an "advisor"? How about if I send an email to info@hillaryclinton.com? What if the Clinton campaign asks me to fix their hard drive and I offer an opinion on health care policy - or race relations? We know that journalists have no ethics so we should we assume anything they do is above-board?
Josh Marshall is smarter than that and should know better. We, the blogosphere, can hold ourselves to higher standards than the Corporate Media, which is thoroughly discredited due to its partisanship, sloppiness, and lies (see Cameron, Carl or Miller, Judith).
Here are several principles that should govern how bloggers handle this stuff that would make our coverage better than corporate media coverage:
1. Always name names both of initiators and angry reactors - otherwise don't use the quote.
2. Provide complete quotes in full context - otherwise don't use the quote. (Better yet, provide audio or video.)
3. Fully disclose the candidate affiliations of initiators and reactors.
4. Fully disclose whether their statements were formally approved or simply personal opinions - never assume approval based simply on "affiliation."
5. If a remark becomes controversial, provide full opportunity for initiators to clarify ambiguous or possibly misinterpreted remarks, and then provide full opportunity for reactors to reply to this clarification.
If progressive blogs adopt these principles, we can avoid divisive and self-defeating battles over anonymous, unauthorized, or distorted quotes - and concentrate all our firepower on beating the Republicans.

Hillary/Obama Campaign
It makes me sick to see how the networks, such as CNN is making a racial issue between the Clinton/Obama camps. Many are forgeting what the Clintons did for minorities. I wish I can see a race where all the candidates are handled fairly. Hillary is being criticize on every step she makes, while Obama is being handled like a saint. Why do they hate the Clintons so much? Is it that they are afraid of them? I would like your opinions.
Hillary 08!
Right on! Now let's get back our house!
At least with Hillary, we know that she can...
handle anything the pundits, the Repugnants, and yes, even the Dems will throw at her. They have already thrown everything over the past few years. She is still on her feet.
I doubt that Obama or Edwards can stand up to such sleezy attacks. As some have said, their feelings are already hurt.
The big hue and cry over experience: Hillary will have almost 8 years experience as a popular senator from NY. Added to that is 8 years of being a first lady who actually sat in on committee meetings, made decisions, advised the president(the sort of advice that Kindasleezy gives Bush)and then the 8 years as the first lady of Arkansas and the almost 20 years of successful activist work for people needing help at the national level. None of the other candidates can even come close.
She, along with 75 other senators voted for the IWR: that was based on faulty intelligence created by the Iraq Study Group(the usual cast of criminals)and was to allow Bush to seek counsel and work with the Security Agency of the United Nations. Bush assured the Senators that he would see to it that the inspectors were returned to Iraq. Based on all that false info...the 76 senators voted for the IWR.
She is faulted by many for other things, but no one has a better record over their senate career of working so hard for people needs. Most people never bother to check that out.
A bit off topic, but what the heck...the chips are now on the table and the show is on the road.
Just waiting for the fat guy to sing.

The greatest derangement of the mind is to believe in something because one wishes it to be so.
True very true
For the first time this week I see a glimmer of hope that the democratic party won't steal victory from defeat, again.
If Obama wants the presidency so bad then he's going to have to toughen up a bit. It's to dame bad if his little feelings are going to be hurt in the election process but if you want to play nyc school yard ball, then better bring some band aids with ya. He(Barak)can't have it both ways. Either you accept the fact that your ethnicity is going to be used against you or get the hell out!
If a woman down south can ask McCain, "How do we beat the bitch?" What is he going to do when the repug candidate is asked "How do we beat the N?" Is he going to run home to mommy and cry racism?
"Divide, and Conquer". The
"Divide, and Conquer". The repugs and the mainstream media would love to see the Democratic party in disruption and in dissention as people fight for their candidate. They'll be glad to help it along by putting tags on things. "Are you a Feminist Democrat"? Or, "Are you a Liberal Democrat"? "Are you an African American Democrat"?
Yes, Dems are capable of hurting themselves at times and the msm loves to stir the pot.
IMO, divsions such as described in the post, ultimately hurts Dems and help the repugs.
