Let's Stop the Republican Debt Slavery Act in the House
Many Americans are mourning Senate passage of the Debt Slavery Act of 2005, commonly known as the Bankruptcy Bill.
As Mother Jones said, "Don't Mourn, Organize!"
Let's stop the Debt Slavery Act dead in the House.
What's that I hear out there? Is someone insisting, "We can't stop Tom DeLay's brutal legislative steamroller!"
The hell we can't.
House Republicans are already running for their lives over Social Security privatization. When Tom DeLay ordered them to hold town hall meetings on privatization in February, two-thirds of them flatly refused. When George Bush took Air Force One for a Bamboozlepalooza rally in Alabama - Alabama - six of the seven House Republicans announced they suddenly had to attend urgent Congressional hearings!
It's only going to get worse for House Republicans, because George Bush is determined to march them off the cliff for privatization, even though each new poll shows ever-greater opposition to Bush's plan. Every House member is up for election in 2006, compared to just one-third of the Senate. And the voters who turn out most reliably in off years (like 2006) are Social Security recipients!
House Republicans are also reeling from the growing pressure on Tom DeLay, whose numerous scandals continue to generate headlines and outrage - even from conservatives like David Brooks. And DeLay's brazen and cruel exploitation of Terri Schiavo's life in his desperate effort to save his own political life has outraged the vast majority of Americans and turned them solidly against DeLay and the rest of the Republican Congress.
Meanwhile, on the House Democratic side, there is absolutely no reason for anyone to support this bill. In the Senate, a significant chunk - 5% - of the Democratic caucus represents MBNA (Delaware Senators Joe Biden and Tom Carper). In the House, that figure is 0%. So there is no good reason for even one House Democrats to whore his or her vote.
Of course, there are a few corporate whores in the Democratic caucus. But of the 39 members of the House New Democratic Coalition, only 18 begged Speaker Hastert to bring the bill up for an immediate vote, and only 2 other Democrats joined them. I'm pretty sure those 20 Democrats could be persuaded to switch their positions if Democratic activists (including Democrats.com chapters) did some grassroots work in their districts, perhaps even threatening to run primaries against them.
The issue of debt slavery unites all Democrats across ideological lines. Progressives are naturally livid - but even centrists like the New Republic-ans are outraged:
This magazine and multiple other opinion outlets on the center-left have written at length about how the bill in question is a truly contemptible piece of legislation... The only way a congressman [sic] could possibly support it is through a craven and reflexive willingness to do the bidding of big business... [Supporting this bill] could set back the cause of moderates within the party for months, if not years. It really is a colossal, inexcusable mistake.
It also unites Democrats with moderates - and lots of conservatives too. Conservatives claim economic liberty is the absolute foundation of America. So how can these conservatives possibly support debt slavery?
With powerful support across the ideological spectrum, we can absolutely win this battle at the grassroots.
Let's start with the progressive blogosphere. We can count on Josh Marshall (and Harvard Prof. Elizabeth Warren) at TalkingPointsMemo, who are kicking Bush's ass on Social Security. Atrios is fuming. So are the folks at DailyKos, DemocraticUnderground, and everywhere else Dems hang out.
But that's just the start. A fantastic effort at http://politology.us/ is reaching out to moderates, libertarians, and conservatives to make this a full-spectrum campaign.
While we reach out to the bloggers, we need to enlist large grassroots organizations like Moveon, True Majority, People for the American Way, Working Assets, Campaign for America's Future, Common Cause, etc. We need the unions - all of them. We need the churches too - because every religion cares about the poor. We need feminist groups like NOW and the Feminist Majority; ethnic groups like the NAACP, Urban League, and Council of La Raza; veterans groups like the American Legion and the VFW; mainstream groups like the League of Women Voters and the PTA.
In other words, we should get every group in America involved and create a national firestorm like Congress has never seen.

There will be
consequences for that bankruptcy bill. This could very well affect the stock market.

Consider it done....
I mulled this over on another thread. I realize that this is payback to the banking industry, however, I agree with Jane. This is absolutely crazy in its potential consequences. It seems to me to be quite possibly heralding the beginning of a house of cards falling down. So why is this happening now, along with the complete gutting of safety nets? Am I missing something here?

I ask everyone on this blog to please click on the flashing link at the top of the page, and write to your Congressional delegates now! Please add your own message, and use strong, clear, language to indicate your displeasure with their overall performance to date (where it applies).
Also, urge all of your friends, relatives, and neighbors to write as well. This is a simple and painless way to be active. And, if you can, please participate in the other activities that Bob has mentioned above.
We need to let our representatives know that we will not stand for anymore pandering to the Republicans on this, or on any other, socially destructive Corporate Welfare issue. The time to begin taking back control of our Party is now. Enough is enough!

don't mourn, organize!
Organize, yes, but the Democrats will never win another presidential election, if they don't do something about the electronic voting machines. What is needed is an army of volunteers to monitor polling places, issue paper receipts manually, in places where machines do not issue paper receipts automatically, then cross-check the manual count with the machine count at closing of the polls.

Credit Card Junk Mail
This idea was sent to me and I think it is a great idea to protest to the credit card companies who seem to be running the Republicans.
Those junk mail unsolicited credit card mailers that want us to get more credit or spend more money, well, send all of them back empty using thos prepaid postage permit envelopes. Yes send the prepaid envelopes back EMPTY. A GREAT IDEA AND A GREAT PROTEST!
That's a great idea.
I'm going to do it.
I must receive one or two offers a day.
My son ( 20 yrs. old) who has very little income
working part time and going to school gets at least
four to six offers per week. Some "pre-approved"
offers include a $20,000. credit limit for him.
That's obscene! No wonder so many people are
in debt way over their heads. It's encouraged by
these predatory credit card companies.
And now that it's harder
to file for Bankruptcy, I bet he get's twice that number for even larger limits.
clwilk, you're right.
Please check out my true story on your forum.
A better idea!
I got a better idea! Don't send the envelopes back empty, put your other junk mail in there and send it to them. Recycle, Reduce, Reuse. They might like the offers you send them!
War does not determine who is right,
war determine who is left.
Recycle
Take your address off the junk mail first though.

Good for you. What would work however is TELLING all those companies in an organized way that we are burning all their junk mail!
Of course, after you reduce your junk mail to a minimum by other means you could still find a use for what is left rather than putting it in a landfill. There are paper burning barbecue sets. People put the paper in their walls as insulation, etc.

It's amazing isn't it? I have some background in the business equipment industry (connected printing platforms, copiers, etc.). It was an eye-opener to discover that the most commonly printed office document is, e-mail. What was supposed to turn us into a "paperless" society, has had the opposite effect. Office paper sales are higher now than at anytime in history.

I have coveted WACOMs Cintiq tablet for years now and just landed a contract in which I asked for a tablet as well!!! The 21 inch. This should help. Go to www.wacom.com and check it out. I have been hired to do all the artwork for the little "invention" of mine that they previously bought.

Wow. That's cool! I bookmarked the site, but for some reason I couldn't get to the "Store" page (page not found). Any idea of the price range on these puppies?
Well when my lust began about
Well when my lust began about $5000!!!! Then a couple of years past and they hung there (for the biggest one) at about $3500. Well I just saw they came out with a new model (larger and with all those special keys and sliders) for $3000! Still scary but THEN I checked the price at reputable online stores and its $2500 for the big one!!! Of course they place the smaller one at a street price of $1800 so if you think a monitor is worth about half that you are tempted up to buy a monitor you can draw on in high resolution. AND of course just before you buy you think "geez" if I pay just $700 more I can get the big one! So you tell the wife as Homer does: "but Marge we can't afford NOT to buy it." Now Jimmy's technique is a little different: I now include TOYS for me IN my freelance contracts, then I do not have to debate the necessity of such items with the misses. Hey its part of the deal! It also helps to talk about your new "love" for a great deal of time before the actual purchase. In my case: years.
I just had the same problem with the store. Wacom's online store however does not sell the CINTIQ. They leave that for their online dealers. Hey I will be buying one in about one week. If you want one, we can buy together and perhaps save. Of course you have had Zero time to massage the misses so I know there is often a curve to buying these things. On the other hand if you want to use me as an excuse, go right ahead. I know Wacom has a link for those wanting to purchase more than one tablet. Not sure if there is any real savings for two.
Here is a link to one of Wacom's online partners:
http://www.coolgraphicstuff.com/store/index.php?cat=2
I'm also assuming (as in the past) that ebay will have one soon with a BUY NOW price of a bit under $2500.
And by the way its not worth
And by the way its not worth waiting for tablet PCs right now. I've tried them with my software and the curser lags the pen by a LOT. I need a big box driving my screens.
I should also note that if you only need a tablet without an image on it (in other words not a screen) you can get one of those for $50. That is what I have used for years.
I started using AutoCAD in my
I started using AutoCAD in my security design work about a year ago (was using Visio before), and it's getting to be a pain with just a mouse/trackball. I have never used a tablet, but I suspect that it would be a good thing to have the drawing on a screen.

Cool. You might want to try one of these:

Just click on an image to go to the details.
I almost purchased one but since I moved into artwork as well the tablet is going to fill all needs.
By the way I also used my joystick (Gravis) to move things around in cad software. Not as sophisticated as the 3dconnexion stuff but it worked for a change of pace. I'm looking forwared however to putting the screen on my lap and facing a window or aquarium and getting to work.

papermore society
I am guilty of that too. My family uses much more paper now that we have a computer and printer. I could barbecue all my meals without even touching the junk mail!
Here is a serious
site about junk mail and it even addresses the notion of sending the return envelope stuffed with junk mail, or empty.
http://www.breakthechain.org/exclusives/prepaid.html
From that site:
There are several things you can do to significantly decrease the amount of junk mail you get and, thus, lower your risk of identity theft.
Tell the major credit-reporting agencies to not share your info with prospective bulk mailers. Call 1-888-567-8688 to opt out of pre-approved offers of credit or insurance.
Contact each of the banks and financial institutions with which you do business and ask them not to share your credit information.
Register with the Direct Marketing Association's Mail Preference Service
Register on the Federal Do Not Call Registry (yes, I know it's for telemarketers, but it also helps reduce junk mail).
Buy a paper shredder and use it to destroy all unsolicited offers you receive.
AND I don't know if this is legitamate:

1-888-5-OPTOUT is an automated service run jointly by the four main credit bureaus. With one phone call you can opt out of pre-screened mailings from all four bureaus.

You know on second thought -- I don't think I'd give out my SS# to anyone I didn't know -- so I would use caution with the above information. (it sounds fishy to me)
Personally I think putting a protest letter into the envelope would be a great way to go.

LOL! I like it. Many centuries ago, my wife married me for my money, but within a couple of weeks the $300.00 was gone and she knew she had made a questionable choice.
On a few occasions when there was more month left than money, we would send the check for the electric bill to the water company, the water check to the mortgage company, etc. By the time our "mistakes" were corrected, we usually had enough money to cover them all. We only got away with that a few times however.
I bet that wouldn't work today
The way thing work today you'd have them all cashing the checks they got and then you'd have credits and debits all over the place not to mention the cost of bounced checks.

You got that right. I once sent in a $2000 check to a credit card to pay for a purchase. They credited my account $20!!!!! I called and they told me the procedure to go through to correct their mistake. I shit you not, it was a part time job for me for two months. 2 hours a day on the phone every friggin day!!! Every week to two weeks I would get bumped up to a higher level until I met someone who really cared and helped me. After a couple weeks with her, she placed me back a the STARTING POINT!!!!!!!!!! I've been told by banking personal that they are overworked and are told to string someone along and then simply lose the paperwork! Lovely.
That's one of the reasons tha
That's one of the reasons that I have switched to electronic banking and bill paying. My bank charges me $10.00/month for the service, but I have never had a "glitch" since I started. I believe that's because most transactions are conducted by "wire" rather than paper. They still send a few paper checks, but I can go back to the bank and have THEM straighten it out if something goes wrong, goes wrong, goes wrong.

Either TJ or Frank Zappa. That's interesting however, because even in large cities areas seem to have broken down into neighborhoods (or "hoods"), where social bonds are tighter than other places.
On a small island however, a huge population increase seems to cause more friction than bonding.
Interesting. I think you
Interesting.
I think you’re suffering from edge effects! Some of this must also have to do with simple "geometry". I mean physical systems do NOT scale. A larger and larger sugar cube eventually crumbles even though it is still a cube. A larger and larger sphere retains MORE heat than it radiates even though it is still a sphere. Blow up any animal and the animal is crushed by its own weight as it gets larger even though its shape remains the same. You can make big things but only by changing how you do things. For example blow up an ant and put it next to an elephant and you’ll see the ants legs are SKINNY compared to the elephant. All this reminds me too of warfare. If you surround a much larger army, forces on the interior can not help your opponent. It’s all edge vs. edge and they are identical. It must be very clear on an Island that an EDGE exists and its close!
Credit solution
Instead of just whining to our congresspersons about the GOP bankruptcy reform scam, we need to provide a more viable solution. Indeed, the answer to debt slavery is to penalize the slavemasters. A huge punitive tax against the wealthy could be used to eradicate the credit card debt of middle and lower class Americans, most of which have to choose between paying their credit card bills and feeding their family. Bush's $300 tax refund barely paid my Columbia House CD Club bill...a check for $10,000 from Uncle Sam would go far to free me from the binds of debt slavery, while it's mere pocket change for the rich fat cats who own Bush.
