Crucial Week for Impeachment: Honk to Impeach!

CommunityWalk Map - ImpeachMap

Something very important happened in Congress on Thursday. After 7 years of cowering in fear of every dictatorial demand from Bush and Cheney, House Democrats finally rose up and said NO.

First, House Democrats refused to give immunity to the telecom giants for illegally wiretapping the calls and emails of every American - despite two Bush press conference hissyfits and endless Corporate Media lies.

Second, House Democrats declared Harriet Miers and Josh Bolten to be in contempt of Congress for rejecting subpoenas to testify about the U.S. Attorney scandal, despite an faux-angry walkout by Republicans. Watch Rep. Robert Wexler's excellent floor speech:

Could this be the start of holding George Bush and Dick Cheney accountable for their innumerable High Crimes?

The main problem we face is time. Since this is an election year, Congress will stop legislating and start campaigning full-time in May. Since impeachment hearings take time, those hearings must begin now.

Thanks to your emails and calls, 18 Democrats support Rep. Robert Wexler's call for Cheney impeachment hearings:
http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/cheney
But that's not enough - we need 100 Democrats to support Wexler in order to force Speaker Pelosi to hold these hearings.

This week, every Member of Congress will be home working at their District Offices and meeting with the voters who elect them. That's us.

So let's send them a loud and clear message: Start Impeachment Hearings for Dick Cheney Now.

One great way to send that message is through "Honk to Impeach" actions at the District Offices of your Representative. These actions are fun and passing cars love it. It just takes 2-3 brave people to have a successful 1-hour event.

Here's a national map with ongoing honk-a-thons:

If you don't see one near you, call your bravest friends and pick the date(s), time, and contact info. Find District Offices by searching for your Representative here:

alex, should we coddle child molseters too?

Your argument is:

Dong the right thing costs money and requires effort, therefore don't do it.

My arguent

No my argument is that the opportunity costs are higher then the benefits.. from every perspective you look at including winning the next presidency. Why spending millions for something that happens anyway at the end of the term (removal from office)

Men without balls are forgotten.

First off, millions of dollars is NOTHING. A single Bush tax cut, for a single Aristocrat, was that much.

Secondly, Impeachment should have been a matter of course ALONG with rousing the Nation towards getting capital back in the hands of the working majority.

A Democratic sweep should have put our house in order, including sweeping out the trash.

As to strategies on how to show folks just what the rats have done, I'm all ears. Honking was one suggestion.

Also...

How do you suggest folks get woken up?

---The troops left in Stop Loss while men without balls fail to enlist WHILE fanning the flames of War.

Folks still sleeping.

---A million dead in Iraq.

Folks still sleeping.

---Historic Surplus turned to Historic Deficit.

Folks still sleeping.

---1 buck a gallon gas turned to 3 buck a gallon gas.

Folks still sleeping.

ETC.

----------

When you don't own the media you find other ways to get the word out.

And the notion that one can't impeach a rat bastard while rousing the public to ALSO support sweeping Economic reforms is simply MORE THAN FALSE. A catalyst is needed and a housecleaning can help.

Impeachment

"There is a tide which, when caught at the flood......" I'm afraid the tide has gone out,as well as the courage of most of the up-for-re-election-every-two-years membersmof Congress.
The sex-obsessed Republicans who harrassed the Clintons for 6 years, spent millions of dollars, and had to settle for a lie about a blow job as grounds for impeachment, must resist,to the last man,any investigation of their collusion in the lawlessness inflicted upon us by Bush and his abettors.

This is absolutely the very best time to get impeachment done.

Is defending the Constitution and the separation of powers ever a bad thing.

I would think the right time to impeach is when the offenses have occurred. To wait is to let the crooks get away with it and establish a presidential precedent that may affect our children's future freedoms.

The truth is that as soon as the Judiciary Committee decides to hold hearings on possible impeachable offenses, that stops Bush and Cheney from using the executive privilege excuse for not testifying. At that point they have to answer the call from congress. Also if an impeachment is voted out of the House for either president or vice president it is Not Pardonable by anyone.

The only distraction is thinking that doing the right thing could be a distraction.

We are either for defending the Constitution or we are not. There is no being sort of for the Constitution, than there is of being sort of pregnant.

Who is to say that our next president regardless of party may/may not be leaning towards having an imperial presidency with worse offenses.

We have to do this thing regardless of when it presents itself to us. Just like the Constitution tells the Congress It Shall Impeach when crimes have been committed, we citizens take our cue from the Constitution and know that unless we defend it whenever our help is needed, we may lose the freedoms it bestows on us. Denying that there are crimes so a congressman can avoid going through the impeachment process merely makes the congressman a coward and a co-conspirator with Cheney and Bush.

We take a pledge of allegiance to the Constitution not any political party. We must defend the Constitution over any party, election or claim of distraction.

I know we all see every aspect of government differently. But protecting the Constitution should be the first priority for all of us. A donkey could beat the GOP this year. We don't have to abandon the Constitution to win.

Pardon my two cents. I'm worried that impeachment advocates are losing faith and looking for reasons to jump ship. This is absolutely the very best time to be pushing hard for impeachment. The Democrats really would be screwed if the impeachment movement got really angry and turned on them.

There are as many co-sponsors on H Res 333 now as there were for the Nixon impeachment articles or so I'm told. If you pressure Congress this will happen.

Hang in there. We can do this.

IMPEACHMENT

February 18, 2008

The Honorable John Conyers, Jr., Chairman
House Committee on the Judiciary
2138 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Chairman Conyers:

When you took office, you solemnly swore, or affirmed, that you would support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Do you remember that day?

The past seven years our Constitution has been under attack from within, by two of the most cunning criminals in our nation’s history – George Bush and Richard Cheney. During the first six years there was, admittedly, little you could do given that the Republicans controlled the House. Today, however, it is a different story, or should I say, it should have been a different story. The Democratic Party, thanks to the people, now control both the Senate and the House of Representatives, yet it remains business as usual, with the Speaker of the House having decided that Bush and Cheney are above the law, and not to be held accountable under any circumstance for their crimes against the Constitution, humanity, and the environment.

Who amongst you will speak for the Constitution? Congressman Kucinich and Wexler have both spoken up, but, alas, they have been effectively silenced. Their cries for impeachment fall seemingly on deaf ears. Will you, as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee have the courage to speak for the Constitution? Do you have the courage to stand up to Nancy Pelosi, and say “Madam Speaker, enough is enough. President Bush and Vice President Cheney have run helter skelter over the Constitution, and with few exceptions, we have allowed them to do so. It is time to put a stop to their actions, and for that reason, I am opening hearings for impeachment of both the President and Vice President, this day.”

If Congress fails to speak for the Constitution, then Congress will be just as guilty as Bush and Cheney, opening the door wide to our “government of the people, by the people, and for the people,” [to] “perish from the earth.”

A little over 100 years ago our nation faced a similar crisis. We were “engaged in a great civil war, testing whether” [our] “nation, orany nation so conceived and so dedicated,” [could] “long endure.” We are again involved in a crisis that will determine whether our “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

The ball is in your court. It’s the final five-minutes of the game. You can remain silent, and Bush and Cheney go free and the Constitution is trashed, or you can stand up and be counted, and restore the Constitution.

It is up to you.

I pray that you have the courage, the honor, and integrity, to make the right decision. The oath you took demands no less.

Sincerely,

J Clark

No excuses

Impeachment of Cheney first, then usurper Bush is vitally important, even if neither is eventually convicted by the Senate. Impeachment of these two miscreants, these two war criminals, these two traitors must go forward because the whole world is watching. Impeachment is essential if the United States is to have any hope of regaining respect among the nations of the world. Impeachment is the key step, for if these two criminals are allowed to skate the world will see that the United States, that is, America, which is all of us, has become the very monster it has always in the past opposed. Impeachment will leave Cheney and usurper Bush no fig leaf to hide behind. They may escape arrest for their crimes. They may elude trial for their crimes. They may retire to safe havens to wallow in their ill-gotten gains, but if they are not indicted for their many crimes, their many high crimes, their many low misdemeanors, then it is we, the American people, who will bear the shame they have brought upon us all. Unless we the people take a stand for justice we will all be judged by the rest of the world as complicit in the damage Cheney and usurper Bush have done not only to the United States of America, not only to Afghanistan, not only to Iraq, but to the entire world. Impeachment may not cure all the ills Cheney and usurper Bush have visited upon us, but it will at least give us, the American people, a last shred of respect for finally calling them out for all the wrongs they have done.

Agree with steveff, impeach even if no chance to remove them.

The point must be made for history, for all time that what Cheney and Bush did is so wrong, so evil, that the Congress, the Democratic Party and all Americans that value freedom cry out for impeachment even if they cannot be removed. The point must be made. Those that come after us must know that we knew they were wrong and tried to do something about it.

In COLORADO we have been trying to do protests this week in front of the local offices of our congressmen. Unfortunately few activists are showing up. If you live in COLORADO please check out our website and attend our events.

IMPEACH COLORADO COALITION - Email: protestinthestreet@yahoo.com

Agree with Steveff, Impeach even if no chance to remove them.

Bruce Fein discussed impeachment on Bill Moyer's Journal last July, and he made it clear that we must at least start the proceedings, and I agree with his and Steveff's analysis.

By at least starting the proceedings, we send a message to future generations and the world that NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW, and that in a democracy the people have a means of redressing their election mistakes through legal proceedings, rather than acts of violence.
